London- based underground musician Bishi Bhattacharya and her musical partner Matthew Hardern talk in this podcast about their biographies, their artistic development, race, their common project Albion Voice and the corresponding track. Bishi explains why she doesn't apologize for feeling «like a hot woman» while Hardern states with a loud and resounding laughter why nationalism fascinates him. She sings a pastoral song in perfect English and plucks an Indian sitar. Bishi invokes the Sex Pistols. But instead of electric guitars she attacks England with a rich mix of folkloric sounds and memories of the colonial past. It is England and not India that is exotic for once. I had no idea what I was doing, I didn't know anything about my history or where I fitted in. I did what I thought was essential.» Matthew Hardern «The medium that I can work in the quickest is the night club because you have the ability to turn around ideas rapidly. Meeting Bishi has really helped me develop an understanding and context of my work.» Matthew Hardern «If you're a female musician and a producer people look down on you if you do hair and makeup and glamour and I'm like well I do hair and makeup and cleavage and I play instruments and I write and I co-produce. If you seem to be an artist you must have this piety around what you do but I feel like a hot woman and I don't apologize for that. And the fact that people don't like that is an interesting tension.» Bishi «It's a highly futuristic, but it's very laced in folk music. It's my world and Matthew's world. And that's the script that I completely have so far managed to fail out.» Bishi «And also I was so excited by causing offense in the English or British context because people hate talking about race in England. There's a huge issue but no one ever mentions. And just to say Indian skin, skin, skin, skin color, pigmentation, different colored skin, race [laughs]. And I play with it a lot in my work because I find it very vibrant and energetic.     BUZZCOCKS Christmas 1976. Manchester punk pioneers Buzzcocks formed by Howard Devoto and Pete Shelley have recorded and are just about to have phenomenal success with the groundbreaking, Spiral Scratch EP. Two months later, as the release starts to take off, Howard Devoto leaves. A quick reshuffle and Pete Shelley takes over lead vocals. Over the years, the lineups change. Only Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle remain constant members of this iconic band. The methodology remains constant too: short, sharp slices of sublime guitar punk pop music, revered by a global army of fans and vitally influential to legions of bands coming up behind. Flash-forward to 2018. Buzzcocks have been throttling back a bit, being a bit more exclusive but still very busy. The band signs their catalogue to Domino Records and announce a landmark performance of “Singles Going Steady” at the Royal Albert Hall for June 2019 with The Skids and Penetration. It looks as if Buzzcocks are going to enjoy some well deserved and high profile recognition of their contribution to British culture. On 6th December, that bright prospect is thrown into darkness with Pete's tragic and unexpected death. The Albert Hall show is recast as a tribute to Pete Shelley with remaining members Steve Diggle, Chris Remington, and Danny Farrant, joined by original band members, 'special guest' vocalists and guitarists. For now and into the future Buzzcocks will continue with Steve on lead vocals/guitar, Chris Remington on Bass, and Danny Farrant on Drums with an added guitarist. Commitments will be honoured; you can't hold a good band down.

Strip away the synthesizers, speed things up a little and you’ve got the makings of another buzzsaw Buzzcocks classic. The B side’s even better (“Guess I Must Have Been In Love With Myself,” a Buzzcocks title if ever there was).     Buzzcocks: Live At Shepherds Bush Empire 2003 http://cultclash.777mb.com/films/buzzcocks.html Buzzcocks: Live at Shepherd's Bush Empire 2003 Reviewed by Winslow Leach THE REVIEW: Buzzcocks were formed in Manchester, England in the mid 70s by two kids named Pete Shelley (lead vocals) and Howard Devoto. The name "Buzzcocks" was taken from a local slang word used by the older people which meant "young kids". The group use of the name was mainly influenced by its use in the UK television drama "Rock Follies". After attending a Sex Pistols show in London, the two friends arranged for the Pistols to play in their hometown at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in June 1976. Buzzcocks were going to play at this concert themselves and open for the Pistols but they didnt have any bass player or drummer at the time. They then hired musicians John Maher and Steve Diggle on and they played their first concert with the Sex Pistols the following month in July. At the end of 1976, the Buzzcocks had recorded a 4 track EP called "Spiral Scratch" on their own recording label called "New Hormones". Buzzcocks' music was incredibly energetic and infectious, and their early song "Boredom" was a huge hit with the punk audiences. As soon as the punk rock movement started to become a mainstream fad, Buzzcock's co-founder Howard Devoto split and formed another band called "Magazine" which was something more stage performance based. Pete Shelley continued to sing, but bassist Steve Diggle moved to guitar and the band added Steve Garvey as the bass player.

As a testimonial to his endowment to the world, this small poetry collection, Pogo Serotonin, has been created on behalf of Buzzcocks. Since editing this collection began, I learned that my dog walker is Pete’s cousin. Something, or someone, was clearly drawing me to begin this project. Without any personal connection to his hometown of Leigh, my aim was to invite the musicians and poets who I believed to know Pete best; who were inspired by his song-writing and lyrics; and who basked in his genius from within the crowd. It was Buzzcocks, above all other punk bands, who had their hoards smiling back at them, mid-pogo. Serotonin for the soul.
