  • BUZZCOCKS Christmas 1976. Manchester Punk Pioneers
BUZZCOCKS Christmas 1976. Manchester punk pioneers Buzzcocks formed by Howard Devoto and Pete Shelley have recorded and are just about to have phenomenal success with the groundbreaking, Spiral Scratch EP. Two months later, as the release starts to take off, Howard Devoto leaves. A quick reshuffle and Pete Shelley takes over lead vocals. Over the years, the lineups change. Only Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle remain constant members of this iconic band. The methodology remains constant too: short, sharp slices of sublime guitar punk pop music, revered by a global army of fans and vitally influential to legions of bands coming up behind. Flash-forward to 2018. Buzzcocks have been throttling back a bit, being a bit more exclusive but still very busy. The band signs their catalogue to Domino Records and announce a landmark performance of “Singles Going Steady” at the Royal Albert Hall for June 2019 with The Skids and Penetration. It looks as if Buzzcocks are going to enjoy some well deserved and high profile recognition of their contribution to British culture. On 6th December, that bright prospect is thrown into darkness with Pete's tragic and unexpected death. The Albert Hall show is recast as a tribute to Pete Shelley with remaining members Steve Diggle, Chris Remington, and Danny Farrant, joined by original band members, 'special guest' vocalists and guitarists. For now and into the future Buzzcocks will continue with Steve on lead vocals/guitar, Chris Remington on Bass, and Danny Farrant on Drums with an added guitarist. Commitments will be honoured; you can't hold a good band down.

An incredible chance to own the original concert footage, sold with full copyright, from two of the most important concerts of the 20th Century: The Sex Pistols shows at Manchester's Lesser Free Trade Hall on 4th June and 20th July 1976. The concerts are legendary and have been generously covered in print and in film through the years, not least in the Factory Records biopic '24 Hour Party People' which documents how the gigs inspired a generation of Mancunian talent and were significantly influential in the creation of Joy Division, and subsequently Factory Records, Happy Mondays, Oasis, The Smiths and others. The concerts were filmed by Mark Roberts at the behest of organiser and promoter Howard Devoto of Buzzcocks, who along with Pete Shelley had been to London to see the Pistols and subsequently organised the Manchester shows. The historic nature of the footage is indisputable and an independent professional valuation of the commercial potential of the films estimates potential income of £100,000+ over the next 25 year period. The report is available to view by interested parties. Notes on the footage: Non-Manchester footage on this tape (the copyright of this material is NOT INCLUDED) The first 2 minutes of film on this tape are NOT from the Lesser Free Trade Hall. This footage was not shot by Mark Roberts. Most likely this is Julien Temple’s footage of the Sex Pistols at Notre Dame Hall, Leicester Square, London from 15 November 1976 4 June 1976 (approx.

A SELECTIVE ROADMAP OF SOME OF NEW HAVEN’S MOST ICONIC CONCRETE LANDMARKS Entering New Haven by car along Interstate 95 offers a tour through one of America’s last remaining Brutalist corridors. Approaching the Oak Street Connector, you can still catch a glimpse of the briskly fenestrated raw-concrete façade of Marcel Breuer’s striking Armstrong Rubber Company Building (1968), which now sits vacant in a vast IKEA parking lot. Heading towards George Street along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, a stoplight just outside the town’s commercial center brings you momen- tarily to rest at the foot of Roche-Dinkeloo’s enigmatic Knights of Columbus Building (1969), whose 23 raw-steel stories are slung between four colossal brick-clad concrete columns. Further along the boulevard on the right rises the distinctive silhouette of Paul Rudolph’s Crawford Manor housing block (1966), whose “heroic and origi- automobile. It’s perhaps ironically fitting, then, that in order to complete this Brutalist nal” striated-cement cladding promenade you’re best off proceeding on foot. Continuing down Temple Street and was famously contrasted with making a left turn onto Chapel Street, you eventually come to the entrance of Louis the “ugly and ordinary” visage Kahn’s Yale University Art Gallery (1951–53), an expressive use of brick, concrete, and of Venturi and Rauch’s Guild curtain wall that was completed a year before the Alison and Peter Smithson’s Hun- House in the pages of Learning stanton School (Norfolk, England, 1949–54), generally considered the opening salvo from Las Vegas.

Edgy stuff at the time more for the implied subject matter than the music behind it. Although I never warmed to the idea of a Petey Shiney Synthi Shelley, it’s not the radical departure it seems on the surface. Strip away the synthesizers, speed things up a little and you’ve got the makings of another buzzsaw Buzzcocks classic. The B side’s even better (“Guess I Must Have Been In Love With Myself,” a Buzzcocks title if ever there was).
