2 The Source, May 2011 East Baton Rouge Parish Library Baton Rouge Room Additions The 2010-2011 year has been a good year for the Baton Rouge Room Archives. This year has brought a swell of community support in the form of generous donations. Two of the collections we are most proud to have are those of Ernest Gueymard and Judge Carlos Spaht. Ernest Gueymard began to work at the Morning Advocate in 1929, eventually becoming managing editor. He worked for the Capitol City press for 44 years until his retirement in 1973. He was twice married, first to fellow journalist Clair Lunsford with whom he had two children, Anne (m. Shirley) and Davis. He then married Margaret McDearmon Reed Gueymard (former head librarian of the East Baton Rouge Parish Libraries) in 1946. This collection documents Gueymard’s career. He was a member of many community organizations and very active in the social life of Baton Rouge. The library thanks Anne Shirley for the generous donation of this historic collection. Working with local antique store, the library was also able to obtain the Carlos Spaht gives an election speech papers of Judge Carlos G. He served with the US Army during World War II, where he worked with the 8th Chinese Army on the Burma Road campaign. Upon his return to Baton Rouge, he was elected District Attorney, and later was appointed Judge for the 19th Judicial District, a post which he left in 1950 to launch an unsuccessful run for governor against Robert Kennon. He went on to have a successful law career in Baton Rouge and spent time working to desegregate the LSU Law School and create a code of ethics for public servants.
