July 2010 To navigate, click on the sections below— or the arrows at the bottom As an authorized HermanMiller retailer, you derive several benefits from our design heritage and brand recognition. It’s likely you already know this well because HermanMiller products are among the top-selling brands for many of our retailers. There are three key elements involved in building on the recognition of the HermanMiller brand: 1. The first element is how you associate your identity with your status as an authorized retailer. Examples on pages 3-4 illustrate how we want you to use the “Authorized HermanMiller® Retailer” phrase in relation to your identity. 2. The second element is the use of our logomark (stylized M in circle) and our logotype (the words HermanMiller). They should always be used in relation to one another. You’ll find more on this on pages 5-6. 3. The third element is the correct, clear, and consistent use of our trademarks. In Resources, on page 24, we provide a link to our current trademark list on hermanmiller.com. In the examples on pages 6-7, we indicate proper usage in ads that feature only HermanMiller products or several manufacturers’ products. Folding Chairs
Folding Chairs When I began researching folding chairs I expected to find an abundance of information about how they were used, what materials were best, where to purchase them and similar questions to aide in a civilian portrayal. After all a variety of folding chairs abound in military photographs and illustrations. The further I researched the more evident it became that I was not going to find a list of chairs which Civil War era civilian reenactors should be using, an abundance of manufacturing statistics leading up to the war, or even advice for selecting the chairs and their upholstery in home economy books. Instead, I found despite a history dating back centuries, folding chairs were minimally used domestically during the first half of the nineteenth century. This was followed by a resurgence in popularity during and immediately following the War, which may have sprouted during the 1850s in the United States and earlier in the century in Europe*. This finding leaves us with a significant quandary regarding the use of folding chairs among civilian reenactors. True. Folding chairs offer several appealing factors. They are easy to pack. They are easy to carry. They offer a periodesque look to a display, home or encampment. They are frequently less expensive then mid-nineteenth century non-folding chairs or their reproductions. They are also documented for military use. Are any of these factors justification enough for the use of folding chairs by civilians? Sorry. I am not going to answer that question for you. I am going to provide you with a summary of what information I have found to aid you in your decision on chair use. -

George Nelson: Architect, Writer, Designer, Teacher celebrates the birth of this iconic American designer, who would have turned 100 in 2008. Organized by the Vitra Design Museum to commemorate this occasion, the exhibition is the first comprehensive retrospective of Nelson’s work. Jill Downen: COUNTERPARTS, the third installment of the NEW FRONTIERS Series for Contemporary Art, exhibits approximately ten architectural sculptures combining human anatomy with the constructed environment. Through her work, Downen invites viewers to reevaluate architectural space in relation to their body and encourages them to achieve a greater awareness of self in that space. (LARGE) TENDON ON PALETTE, 2009 The pieces in the exhibit show the artist’s touch and the transfer of energy from her own body. It is this direct imprint—from smoothing, sanding, scraping, chipping, and scaring—that gives the works a life of their own. One way that Downen makes her sculptures is by first carving the forms and then covering them with a layer of plaster. What are other ways you could make a uide sculpture similar to this one? At home, practice making your own miniature version of this work using air- dry clay, Model Magic, or floral foam and plaster. PLUMB LINE WITH PLASTER, 2011 Plumb lines are tools used by construction workers to ensure that walls are true, or “plumb.” Downen has a collection of plumb bobs, old and new, and uses them in her installations as anchors.
