This is a relatively low maintenance plant, and is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. El presente trabajo es una sinopsis de la familia Acanthaceae donde cuatro subfamilias (incluyendo Avicennioideae) y 38 géneros son reconocidos. El tratamiento de cada género incluye su distribución geográfica, número de especies, endemismo y carácteres diagnósticos. Un total de ocho nombres (Juruasia Lindau, Lo phostachys Pohl, Teliostachya Nees, Streblacanthus Kuntze, Blechum P. Browne, Habracanthus Nees, Cylindrosolenium Lindau, Hansteinia Oerst.) son subordinados como sinónimos y, tres especies endémicas son adicionadas para el país. The national park was F E R N S established in 1968. Marrubium vulgare L. White horehound Family: Lamiaceae Range: Nearly all states, including all western states, except perhaps North Dakota. Found almost worldwide. Habitat: Pastures, fields, roadsides, rangeland, disturbed natural areas, waste places, ditches, and other disturbed places. Most often in dry places. White horehound is especially common in overgrazed areas. Origin: Native to Eurasia. White horehound was once cultivated as a medicinal herb and for flavoring candy. Impacts: Expands range during drought conditions, especially under heavy grazing. Once established, it can outcompete native vegetation and form dense stands in annual grasslands. Livestock avoid consuming the bitter-tasting foliage, and the plant thrives in the absence of competition with other vegetation. California Invasive Plant Council (Cal-IPC) Inventory: Limited Invasiveness White horehound is a cool-season perennial to 2 ft tall, often looking like a low shrub. It has densely hairy white-woolly stems, thick and square in cross-section, which mostly branch near the base of the plant. Its leaves are aromatic, opposite on the stems, ovate to nearly round, 0.5 to 2.5 inches long, with round-toothed margins. -

People in the middle ages had a surprising knowledge of how the human body worked and many cures were based around plants and herbs which are still used nowadays. Fear and superstition played a large part in medieval medicine. Many people believed that an illness was a punishment from God and a cure would only come about through divine intervention. A patient might seek a cure through prayer or going on pilgrimage, rather than consulting a healer or physician. Imbalance of Humours Theory in Medieval Medicine The Hippocratic theory of the four humours of the body was to characterise medicine during the middle ages. Most doctors believed that illnesses were caused by an imbalance of humours in the body, which had to be restored to bring the patient back to health. This theory came from the teachings of ancient Greeks such as Hippocrates and Galen. Their texts referred to the four humours of the body – blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile. These humours were associated with elements of the natural world: Black Bile - earth; Phlegm - water; Blood - air; Yellow bile - fire. It was believed that the four seasons of the year could affect the health of a patient and some physicians used astrology as part of their treatment, believing that the movements of the moon and stars affected when a cure was most effective. Bloodletting and Surgery in the Middle Ages Blood letting was a common cure, which was used for many years after the medieval period. A patient’s vein was cut, or leeches allowed to drink blood from the affected part of the body. -

First reported mentions of its medical properties and use goes as far as the 13th century. The use of black horehound depends on regions and countries. It is used mostly to treat e.g. mild sleep disorders, nervousness, upset stomach, wound healing. It can be used as an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antipro- tozoal, antifungal drug. Moreover, it has been reported as a potential cancer drug. This extensive usage is particularly interesting for us. The aim of this review is to present available data on B. nigra pharmacological effects and known traditional uses gathered from a wide range of scientific articles published in 1997–2020.
