Insects and other terrestrial arthropods are widely distributed in temperate and polar regions and overwinter in a variety of habitats. Some species are exposed to very low ambient temperatures, while others are protected by plant litter and snow. As may be expected from the enormous diversity of terrestrial arthropods, many different overwintering strategies have evolved. Time is an im­ portant factor. Temperate and polar species are able to survive extended periods at freezing temperatures, while summer adapted species and tropical species may be killed by short periods even above the freezing point. Some insects survive extracellular ice formation, while most species, as well as all spiders, mites and springtails are freeze intoler­ ant and depend on supercooling to survive. Both the degree of freeze tolerance and supercooling increase by the accumulation of low molecular weight cryoprotectant substances, e.g. glycerol. Thermal hysteresis proteins (antifreeze proteins) stabilise the supercooled state of insects and may prevent the inoculation of ice from outside through the cuticle. Recently, the amino acid sequences of these proteins have been revealed. Due to potent ice nucleating agents in the haemolymph most freeze tolerant insects freeze at relatively high temperatures, thus preventing harmful effects of intracellular freezing.

MEAGHER Center for Medical, Agricultural and Veterinary Entomology, USDA-ARS, Gainesville, FL 32608 ABSTRACT The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) is a significant economic pest in the western hemisphere, causing substantial losses in corn, sorghum, forage, and turf grasses. Although fall armyworm does not survive severe winters, it infests most of the central and eastern United States and Canada because of annual migrations from overwintering sites in Florida and Texas. A detailed description of these movements is a prerequisite for identify- ing the factors that determine the timing and direction of migration and for developing mod- els that can predict the severity of infestations at the migratory destinations. Complicating this effort is genetic heterogeneity within the species, which increases phenotypic variabil- ity. Particularly important are 2 “host strains”, defined by a preferential association with ei- ther large grasses (designated corn-strain), such as corn and sorghum, or smaller grasses (designated rice-strain), such as rice and bermudagrass. This paper reviews recent studies examining the genetic complexity of fall armyworm populations, including characteristics of the 2 strains and the possibility of subgroups within strains. The use of this information to monitor short and long distance movements is discussed. Capinera2 Introduction and Distribution The fall armyworm is native to the tropical regions of the western hemisphere from the United States to Argentina. It normally overwinters successfully in the United States only in southern Florida and southern Texas. The fall armyworm is a strong flier, and disperses long distances annually during the summer months. It is recorded from virtually all states east of the Rocky Mountains. However, as a regular and serious pest, its range tends to be mostly the southeastern states. It incorporates analyses of additional phenological data concerning German Lepidoptera extracted from records of a selection of migrant and partially migrant species published annually in Atalanta. Some comparisons are therefore possible be­ tween the influence of recent climate changes on Lepidoptera in southern Britain and Ger­ many. The British data, much of it encompassing the period 1940-1999, indicates that butterfly species overwintering in Britain in any stage of their life cycle were appearing earlier in the 1990s compared with both the 1940s and the 1970s by an average of 28 days (Table 1). In contrast the German data, encompassing the period 1960-1999, indicate that such over­ wintering species were appearing earlier by an average of eight days compared with the 1960s and by 12 days compared with the 1970s (Table 3). A comparison between the 1990s and 1970s for four species of butterflies overwintering in both countries in the imago stage (Gonepteryx rhamni (L., 1758), Vanessa atalanta (L., 1758), Inachis io (L., 1758) and Aglais urticae (L., 1758)) indicated that they were appearing earlier by an average of 74 days (ca.

Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), infes- tations in most of North America arise from annual migrations of populations that overwinter in southern Texas and Florida. Cytochrome oxidase I haplotype proÞles within the fall armyworm corn strain, the subgroup that preferentially infests corn (Zea mays L.), can differentiate the Texas and Florida populations. We use this molecular metric to show that fall armyworms in central Pennsylvania originate from Texas, indicating the existence of a migratory pathway from Texas to the northeastern United States. Entomol. 33(4): 881Ð889 (2004) ABSTRACT Male fall armyworm moths[ Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith)] were captured in pheromone traps over a 16- to 24-mo period in selected sites in southern Florida. Molecular markers were used to determine whether individuals were of one of two host strains (historically designated “rice-strain” and “corn-strain”). Trapsplaced in agricultural areasshoweda population peak in the spring (MarchÐMay) and fall (OctoberÐDecember), with a prolonged decline in numbers in summer (JulyÐOctober) and a smaller reduction in mid-winter (January). The host strain distribution during these periods varied signiÞcantly, suggesting strain-speciÞc and seasonal population patterns. Both strains were captured in substantial numbers during the spring peak, but surprisingly, only the rice-strain showed an increase in capture rates during the fall, despite the presence of sweet corn throughout this period. Trap captures in a sod (turfgrass) farm were composed almost entirely of the rice-strain and showed a bimodal seasonal distribution similar to that seen in the agricultural areas, with peaks in the spring and fall. These results represent the Þrst indication that the two host strains might have substantially different population dynamics in the overwintering agricultural areas of Florida and suggest that the rice-strain is the predominant fall armyworm pest during the fall and winter growing periods.
