In this Newsletter there are two reports of successful trips by EIG members to Mount Chelmos in Greece (Page 9 & 10) and to Hungary (Page 11,12 & 13). These activities are beginning to influence local National Parks and it was encouraging to hear that grazing has resumed in the Latrany Valley in Hungary something that the West Midlands group that went to Hungary in 2006 recommended. It was this group that formed EIG. We are able to organize activities in Europe only if we don’t fall foul of the 1991 EU Travel Directive and the 1993 EU Package Travel Directive. This means for all EIG trips we have to either use a travel company such as Ecotours or book our own flights and accommodation as we did in Greece or to travel independently and meet up at the arranged site as we did in the Ecrins last year. There is however an insurance issue outstanding, which would cover BC from, claims from anyone participating in the same way as they are covered by BC’s insurance for a field event or work party in the UK. -

Résumé : Les études de phylogénie moléculaire sur les Lépidoptères Rhopalocères et Zygènes sont de plus en plus nombreuses ces dernières années modifiant la systématique et la taxinomie de ces deux groupes. Une mise à jour complète est réalisée dans ce travail. Un cadre décisionnel a été élaboré pour les niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifique avec une approche intégrative de la taxinomie. Ce cadre intégre notamment un aspect biogéographique en tenant compte des zones-refuges potentielles pour les espèces au cours du dernier maximum glaciaire. Cette démarche permet d’avoir une approche homogène pour le classement des taxa aux niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifiques. Les conséquences pour l’acquisition des données dans le cadre d’un inventaire national sont développées. Summary : Studies on molecular phylogenies of Butterflies and Burnets have been increasingly frequent in the recent years, changing the systematics and taxonomy of these two groups. A full update has been performed in this work. -

The Irish Mountain Ringlet Peter Eeles Abstract: The presence of the Mountain Ringlet (Erebia epiphron) in Ireland has been a topic of much interest to Lepidopterists for decades, partly because of the small number of specimens that are reputedly Irish. This article examines available literature to date and includes images of all four surviving specimens that can lay claim to Irish provenance. [This is an update to the article written in February 2014]. The presence of the Mountain Ringlet (Erebia epiphron) in Ireland has been a topic of much interest to Lepidopterists for decades, partly because of the small number of specimens that are reputedly Irish. The Irish Mountain Ringlet is truly the stuff of legend and many articles have been written over the years, including the excellent summary by Chalmers-Hunt (1982). The purpose of this article is to examine all relevant literature and, in particular, the various points of view that have been expressed over the years. This article also includes images of all four surviving specimens that can lay claim to Irish provenance and some of the sites mentioned in conjunction with these specimens are shown in Figure 1. Cyprus Field Guide for bu�erfly iden�fica�on The European Bu�erfly Monitoring Scheme (eBMS) aims to promote the monitoring and conserva�on of this group of insects. This scheme relies on thousands of volunteers who systema�cally count bu�erflies following simple rules of a standardised methodology. This includes transects (fixed route), or 15-min counts where all bu�erfly species and individuals are registered. Using all the data collected by volunteers we can determine the status of the bu�erfly popula�ons and protect them effec�vely. This guide aims to facilitate the task of field iden�fica�on of 48 bu�erfly species, the most common species that you can see in Cyprus. This guide also serves as a support tool for those involved in the Monitoring of Bu�erflies through the methodologies standardized by eBMS for all of Europe. The collections of Francillon, Drury, MacLeay, Sir J. Banks, and Donovan, contained almost all that was then known of Indian Entomo- logy, with which our Continental neighbours were then, as still, comparatively ignorant. To these collections, examined b}f Fabricius himself, Donovan had free access, and his figures of the insects therein contained, which had served as types for the descriptions of the Entomologist of Kiel, are especially valuable. The progress of Entomology, as a science, has so much advanced, as to render a that its republication of this work advisable ; at the same time, however, requiring original Linnasan style should not be retained, but that it should be brought down to the present state of science. -

Populations are typically fragmented, restricted to high altitudes in one or several mountain ranges, where habitat is relatively well preserved, but where the effects of climate change are considerable. As a result, the genus Erebia has become a model to study the impact of climate changes, past and present, on intraspecific genetic diversity. In this study, we inferred phylogenetic relationships among populations of the European species Erebia epiphron and Erebia orientalis using mitochondrial (COI) and nuclear markers (ITS2, wg and RPS5), and reconstructed their phylogeographical history. It was on wing almost throughout the year breeds with high frequency during the periods of monsoon and post monsoon seasons. Studies were conducted during January 2014 to December 2014 at Sri Lankamalleswara Reserve forest study area in the Eastern Ghats of Southern Andhra Pradesh. The growth from egg to adult was 19 - 22 days with four larval instar stages. There was no dormancy stage in the life history. Short life cycle and high success development of life stages suggest the production of more number of broods yearly. Besides, the population index of Chilades lajus on same ovipostion host plant leaves was discussed. Abstract Environmental factors influencing butterfly abundance after a severe wildfire in Mediterranean vegetation.— Despite the attention given to the ecology of butterflies, little is known about their community response to wildfires in the Mediterranean region. Here, we evaluated the butterfly assemblage two years after a severe, 13,000 ha wildfire in Catalonia (NE Spain) in relation to the surrounding unburned habitat. Using visual transect censuses we assessed community parameters such as abundance, diversity, species richness and equitability in burned and unburned areas. Correspondence analysis was used to analyse specific composition and relative abundance of species in the community. The influence of environmental variables on the abundance of some common species was analysed using generalized linear mixed models, taking spatial effects into account. No significant differences were found between areas for any of the community parameters, and no dominance was detected in the burned area. The structure of the vegetation and the geographical distribution of transects influenced the ordination of species and transects on the correspondence analysis plot. Generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) results underscored the role of nectar availability, fire and vegetation structure on the abundance of most species studied. -

Introduction The genus Kricogonia Reakirt, 1863 belonging to the sub family Coliadinae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) is distributed from the southern United States to Venezuela, Cuba and the Antilles (Smith et al., 1994). According to Smith et al. (1994), two species are recognized from these areas: Kricogonia lyside (Godart, 1819), the type species of Kricogonia, and Kricogonia cabrerai Ramsden, 1920. Klots (1933) published an excellent generic revision of the family Pieridae in which he illustrated and described the male genitalia of K. lyside, but the relationship of Kricogonia to other pierid genera was not clearly shown. -

Tara and Madhvi Gupta Department of Zoology, University of Jammu Jammu-180,006, India *Corresponding author: Anu Bala Abstract The present article incorporates detailed field observations of family Pieridae in Jammu region at different altitudes during spring, summer and autumn seasons of 2012-2013. The study revealed that 13 species of butterflies belonging to 10 genera of family Pieridae exist in the study area. Most members of Family Pieridae are white or yellow. Pieridae is a large family of butterflies with about 76 genera containing approximately 1,100 species mostly from tropical Africa and Asia. Keywords :Butterflies, India, Jammu, Pieridae. Introduction Jammu and Kashmir is the northernmost state of India. It consists of the district of Bhaderwah, Doda, Jammu, Kathua, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Reasi, Samba and Udhampur. Most of the area of the region is hilly and Pir Panjal range separates it from the Kashmir valley and part of the great Himalayas in the eastern districts of Doda and Kishtwar. The main river is Chenab. Jammu borders Kashmir to the north, Ladakh to the east and Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to the south. In east west, the line of control separates Jammu from the Pakistan region called POK. The climate of the region varies with altitude. The order Lepidoptera contains over 19,000 species of butterflies and 100,000 species of moths worldwide. -

The genus Tarucus belongs to the Family Lycaenidae Leach, 1815; Subfamily Polyommatinae Swainson, 1827; Tribe Polyommatini Swainson, 1827; Subtribe incertae sedis. The other genera in the Subtribe incertae sedis in the Afrotropical Region are Cupidopsis, Pseudonacaduba, Catochrysops, Lampides, Uranothauma, Cacyreus, Harpendyreus, Leptotes, Cyclyrius, Tuxentius, Zintha, Zizeeria, Zizina, Actizera, Zizula, Brephidium, Oraidium, Azanus, Eicochrysops, Euchrysops, Orachrysops, Lepidochrysops, Thermoniphas and Oboronia. Tarucus (Pierrots) is a genus of 23 species, which is well represented in the Afrotropical, Oriental and Palaearctic Regions.
