ikkim, a small state covering just 0.2% of the geographical area of the country has tremendous biological diversity and Shas been identified as one of the 34 global biodiveristy hot- spots. The undue credit for such varied biodiversity goes to its unique geographical location and the pecular characteristics of this Himalayan region.

However, with the advent of global pressure on this tiny Himalayan environment, diminishing of natural resources and threat to biodiversity loss is imposed. It therefore becomes our noble responsilibility for raising awareness at a mass level and to take measure to protect our rich biodiversity.

To stimulate such awareness,National Green Corps (NGC) has been the most effective programme at school level. Conceptualized by the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India in 2001, this programme has reached to almost all schools of Sikkim as an action based environment education programme. NGC programme in Sikkim state is also supported by the State Government with the implementation of State Green Schools Programme in all 182 Sr. Secondary and Secondary, Jr. High School and Primary School enhancing the schools environment managment system.

The programme is of immense importance in Sikkim and has been financially supported from the Ministry of Forest Environment & Climate Change, Government of India during the financial year 2014-15 under National Green Corps (NGC). Funds have been fully utilized by 766 school eco-clubs of the state during 2014-15.

FOREWORD We are optimistic about the future of National Green Corps Programme being implemented in Sikkim and look forward for extended support from the Ministry.

2 b. Ten Minutes to Earth and State Green Mission

PLANTATION DRIVES:

With the integration of visionary annual plantation festival viz. State Green Mission and Ten Minutes to Earth, the Paryavaran Mahotsav festival in this tiny Himalayan State has effectively contributed in the global stride for environment protection and its conservation. These visionary programmes conceived by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Pawan Chamling during the year 2006 have greatly motivated and mobilized all ages. Paryavaran Mahotsav as such has given a holistic platform for the nature loving people of Sikkim to come together and participate for the amelioration of the environment.

To facilitate the plantation drive this year, Forest, Environment and Wildlife Department had set up about 50 seedling distribution booths and about 15 mobile seedling distribution vans were mobilized across the State. This year 2,27,125 seedlings were planted throughout the State through voluntary and active participation of the people. The department officers effectively coordinated with the other participating departments and carried out plantation vis-à-vis conservation and protective activities in all districts. Active participation of all government departments, municipal corporations, several NGOs, urban and rural bodies, private industries, educational institutes and panchayats reflect the success of this year’s programme.

The 9th successive phase of State Green Mission was carried out during the fifteen days festival in which 1.62 lakhs seedlings were planted throughout the state. The 6th successive phase of Ten Minutes to Earth plantation programme was also carried out as an annual fest on the 25th of June 2014 at various locations of the State in which about 65k seedlings were planted.

The activities of the schools on that particular day were uploaded in the green wave website of CBD which was reflected in a global map to represent a green wave. The Green Wave is celebrated annually on 22 May – the International Day for Biological Diversity. In participating schools, children and youth plant a tree at 10:00 am local time, creating a “green wave” that goes around the world. Participants upload photos and text to the Green Wave website to share their tree planting stories. An interactive map goes live in the evening at 20:20 local time, creating a second “green wave”.

The Green Wave supports the work of the Convention on Biological Diversity to strengthen awareness and education on biodiversity. The Green Wave supports other tree planting initiatives such as the Billion Tree Campaign led by the United Nations Environment Programme

Roof – Tops Rainwater Harvesting System: The earth is unique planet it only has water in its surface. Water is one of the peculiar, clean liquid without colour, smell or taste that falls as rain and that is used for drinking, washing, cooking, cooling, machines and generating electricity etc. The rainwater is only purest form of water. It is continually being renewed and recharged, through the hydrological cycle; the natural spring, the river, the lake, the oceans and even our tap become thirsty. Thus, water scarcity is a chronic situation where there insufficient water to satisfy normal requirements.

Therefore, roof top rainwater harvesting is only a method for the sustainable management of water scarcity to fulfil the needs and demands of present growing population and urbanization. So rainwater harvesting system is a way to capture the rainwater when it rains, it can be stored above ground making tanks. Either it can be stored in underground tanks. The store water can be used immediately or later whenever it is needed.

Like , and Rajasthan, these states has been adopt the consumption such roof rainwater harvesting system as a very common and compulsory in each and every houses in different Sikkimese households, schools, public places and offices also face the similar water shortages problems during four or five driest month. There are almost six or seven month, we receive abundant amount rainfall in an average of 100 mm to 200 mm daily.

Keeping in view with the usual water management system our Govt. Sec. School Lower Samdong School (East) has been constructing a simple roof- top rainwater harvesting technique since 2010. We are collecting runoff water from the roof top through Bamboo drips. It is naturally the flowing water into the bamboo pipes and stored into the tank every day during summer. Each and every year our water eco club members teachers students belong to the class IX/ X, are changing the damaged one with the new bamboo drips setup, the newly settings for each every academic year. National Green Corps – Sikkim Page|70

Moreover, water stored into the tank is being use by students, for many purpose like washing hand, faces, washes pots for MDM, take water for toilet uses and watering plants, around school campus.

According to the awareness and funds provided by the ENVIS centre Gangtok we have constructed a rooftop rain water harvesting project centre. During the hot sunny days, students as well as teacher user the stored water for multiple uses. Nearby the harvesting system there is a small plot of vegetables beds and flower gardens. While during the off periods our Eco club members use the water with pipe for the purpose of watering the vegetable plot and flowering gardens.

Lastly, during the parent, teachers and students meeting, our green teacher and respected headmaster of the school advised aware the construction and importance of water harvesting system in locality.

Simultaneously, as like in the villages of Tamil Nadu where it sis compulsory to build up roof top water harvesting system. Our Lower Samdong village communities of different households have also learnt and started construction roof top rainwater harvesting system at their house itself recently. We can say it is one of the great boost our school is receiving from our ENVIS centre Gangtok our school now stood as a change maker school in the field of water management, organic farming. Sustainable use of plastics and balance use of water and all.

No Apples, No Mango, only Banyan tree. No pulses, No spinach, only rice to eat. So, we have to save our forest and wild animals, No Tiger, No elephant, only deer to see. We have to keep our Surrounding clean and tidy No other life form in Water, only fish to be? and plant more trees.

Would we survive with rice? Because it is our responsibility Would the deer eat up all green and rice In saving our environment Would the fish have nothing to eat Because this is our heaven Would it survive? Which we have to care.

Green School Programme is an environment and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges schools’s action for the environment.

Sikkim is the first state in the country to launch the Green School Programme at the state-level in 2009. Coordinated at the national level by CSE (Centre for Science and Environment) New Delhi and at the state- level by Department of Forest, Environment & Wildlife Management, GSP is a self- assessment programme in which teachers and students perform rigorous environment audits of Air, Energy, Food, Land, Warer and Waste within their school premise following a set of guidelines outlined in a manual published by CSE, titled ‘How Green is your School?

GSP is now being implemented by 200 schools (government and private) at secondary and senior secondary level in Sikkim.

Unlike a once-off project, GSP is a long-term programme that introduces participants (students, teachers, parents and the wider community) to the concept of an environment management system.

GSP is an effective tool to increase students’ and participants awareness of environmental issues through classroom studies and to transfer this knowledge into positive environment action in the school and also in the wider community.
