The growing interest in and the preparation of elementary schoolcounselors precipitated this project of bringing together the best writings ofthose persons who have dealt with problems related to guidance of youngchildren. This volume is intended primarily for use inthe preparation of ele- mentary school counselors,teachers and administrators. To better under- stand the need, methods and proceduresof elementary school guidance the selected writings in this book will aidthe student in his pursuit of excellence and success in elementary education.This book could serve as a basic text orsupplement to an introductory course inelementary school guidance or as a basis for departure in anadvanced seminar in counselor education. Persons teaching basic professional coursesin elementary education could also utilize these readings tosupplement and enrich their classes. By incorporating the most recentthoughts on the subject of guidance in elementary schools, studentswill gain important knowledge and insight into the fast-moving trends in thisfield. It should help them in carrying out their guidance role inthe classroom. This book is most appropriate for off-campus college classesand in-service training courses for elementary and secondary school personnel.The ideas expressed in the articles should help experiencededucators appreciate and understand more fully howguidance can aid in the development of thechild's poten- tialities. The specific theories advanced,the research findings reported and the practices cited should stimulate questionsand provocative dis- cussions. The book is organized into ten parts. InPart I, Conceptualized Ap- proaches to Guidance in ElementarySchools, focus is placed on various theoretical and philosophical positionsheld by various writers regarding guidance in the elementary school. In Part II,Guidance Roles and Func- tions of the Counselor and OtherSchool Personnel in Elementary Schools, Vi PREFACE discussions are presented concerning the important responsibilities of the various professional personnel who work in elementary schools. In Part III, Exploration of Occupations at the Elementary School Level, selected articles deal with attitudes and concepts of young children toward vari- ous jobs and occupations. Alsoincluded are reports dealing with the ways and means for introducing elementary school age children to the world of work. Part IV, Guidance for Social, Personal and Emotional Development of Elementary School Children, investigates the social forces and environments which affect the behavior of young children. Attention is also given to school performance, personality and attitudinal variables. Part V, Counseling Elementary School Children, is devoted to two research studies involving different approaches to counseling the young child. Part VI, Counseling Parents of Elementary School Children, deals with counseling procedures useful when working with parents of troubled and handicapped children. The ways to improve home-school relationships are also discussed. Part VII, Elementary School Guidance Programs in Practice, cites programs presently carried out in two sec- tions of the country: California and Illinois. In Part VIII, Research Re- lated to Guidance in Elementary Schools, findings are reported which have important implications for guidance and counseling at this age level. Part IX, Preparation Programs for Elementary School Counselors, pre- sents certain positions held regarding graduate programs in counselor education for elementary schools. In Part X, Present Status and Future Outlook, the present situation is described and the plans and hopes for the years ahead are discussed. For each article, acknowledgment is made to the author( s ) and pub- lisher. The editor wishes to express his very sincere appreciation for the privilege of reprinting these recent and significant papers which deal with the many facets of guidance in the elementary school. No decent person likes to watch someone else crash and burn, especially a kid. Yet, I found myself in a position for eight years where I had to do just that. I knew it was coming every year and it was never pleasant. Nor did I ever really get used to it or hardened by it. So, what was the position? It was that of a high school basketball coach at an inner city high school. Every year in the early fall, we began the process of forming that season’s basketball team. This was always a time of big dreams, high expectations, and big talk. Usually the biggest talk came from the new young players or the new kids who had transferred to our school. As the process began, we would spend two weeks trying to get the kids to quit. We would run them more than most of them had ever run in their life.

    CONNECTING THE DOTS BETWEEN FAITH AND LIFE: A NARRATIVE STUDY OF EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN EMERGING ADULTS AFTER COLLEGE by NATHAN COOK BYRD, III Under the Direction of Wendy E. A. Ruona ABSTRACT The purpose of this narrative study was to gain understanding into the faith development of Christian emerging adults after graduation who were leaders in a Christian collegiate ministry while undergraduates at a large southern university. Three questions guided the narrative interview process and data analysis. First, how does the faith of Christian emerging adults change after college graduation? Second, how do emerging adults negotiate the relationship between faith and identity? Third, what happens in the experience and expression of faith during emerging adulthood? Two face-to-face interviews were conducted with each of the fourteen participants seeking to elicit narratives of faith development and experience. Participants were also asked to select and bring an artifact, representative of their faith or faith journey, to the first interview. After the initial interview, narrative analysis was conducted and initial findings were discussed with each participant in a second interview. Narrative analysis of the data revealed five key findings: (a) faith was influenced by each participant’s relationship with others; (b) faith was influenced by “the bubble” constructed by each participant. The bubble is the cultural environment that gives meaning to one’s life and experiences while providing insulation from influences contrary to one’s chosen or preferred perspective; (c) the significance of faith was indicated and influenced by each participant’s activities; (d) each participant’s faith was influenced by mystical experiences; and (e) faith development was influenced and motivated by his or her hopes and dreams for the future.

Goucher's second half-century was a time of transition and new challenges. In the early 1930s, President David A. Robertson introduced a radically new curriculum. A decade later Otto Kraushaar oversaw the move from downtown Baltimore to the col- lege's present location in the city's northern suburbs.
