Social isolation and loneliness can negatively affect well-being over time. Yet, this lack of community is something that can be improved, as there are a number of support systems and re- sources available to older adults through organizations such as OCES.

Councils on Aging (COAs) provide valuable resources as well as many recreational and socialization opportunities. Essentially, these “communities” for older adults offer a variety of activities such as crafts, games, special events, fitness classes, and special interest clubs - all under one roof. For older adults who no longer drive or who are unable to utilize public transportation, many COAs even offer transportation to and from their sites.

Getting involved in the community offers opportunities for social- izing while also providing a sense of belonging. As COVID-19 guidance evolves and things begin to open up, here are some ide- as to help you engage in the community:

Attend local events. From art displays in the park, free concerts on the town common, Farmer’s Markets and other happenings in your town - simply show up!

Share your talent or hobby. Display your photography or teach a small group how to knit or build birdhouses.

Join the local garden club. Expand your knowledge of flowers and plants and enjoy being part of your town’s beautification process.

Work on a community project with others. From painting the local church fence to decorating a float for the town’s parade, spe- cial projects can spark new friendships.

Join a walking group. Not only is walking one of the best ways to keep fit, walking with a group is safer and more fun than walking alone.

Shop local. They appreciate your business and you’ll appreciate the extra attention they give you.

Support your local sports team. No need to travel far to enjoy a great baseball game on a warm summer evening. Bring a lawn chair and get ready to cheer.

Volunteer at a local organization. From the animal shelter to the food pantry, these nonprofits are in need of helping hands. 8 East Bridgewater Council on Aging Newsletter ~ JULY 2021

Spraying for adult mosquitoes began on June 1st. Residents can call up to eight times per season to be sprayed, barring any spray restrictions in the area. Residents must call, fax, drop off (mail box located by entrance) or mail each request to 272 So. Meadow Road, Plymouth, MA 02360, when they have a mosquito problem. Please include your name, address, phone number and email address.

Tips for Homeowners:

Experience has taught mosquito control personnel that homeowners can create their own mosquito problems. Homeowners can do some simple things that will reduce the number of mosquitoes in their yard. It is possible to generate large amounts of mosquitoes around the home with small amounts of water. Not only are these in- sects pests they also play a significant role in the transmission of West Nile Virus. Mosquitoes can have many generations in one year and in the heat of the summer they can go from egg to adult in about a week. The best way to prevent mosqui- to production is to remove any objects that hold water from your yard. Below is a list of common objects or places that produce mos- quitoes:  Gutters: Rain gutters on houses tend to fill up with leaves and other things that clog the gutters. This material can cause gutters to hold water long enough to produce mosquitoes.  Swimming pools: Any unmaintained pool is large enough to produce ample mosquitoes to bother the whole neighborhood. Keep your children’s pool full of clean water and make sure all swimming pools do not become full of algae or leaves.  Tires: Old tires are notorious for producing large numbers of mosquitoes. If you are storing tires, put them in a shed or garage. If you have a tire swing, put a hole in the bottom of it so it cannot hold water.  Flower pots: Old flower pots or dishes underneath the flower pot can hold enough water for mosquito larvae.  Gardening tools: Garden tools such as wheelbarrows or shovels.  Toys: Toys left outside can collect water.  Bird baths: Bird baths should be emptied and cleaned once a week to prevent mosquitoes.  Garbage cans and lids: Make sure there are holes in the very bottom of your garbage can.  Tarps: Frequently people use tarps to cover items such as wood, boats or to make a fort. Always keep the tarp tight and drain any water off the tarp.  Boats: Any boat, or tarp covering a boat can hold water. Make sure the plug in the bottom of the boat is open so water can drain from it.
