The Simpsons - Wikipedia The show is set in the fictional town of Springfield and parodies American culture and societytelevision, and the human condition. The family was conceived by Groening shortly before a solicitation for a series of animated shorts with producer James L. Groening created a dysfunctional family and named the characters after his own family members, substituting Bart for his own name; he thought Simpson was a funny name in that it had the word "simp" in it, which is short for " simpleton ". After three seasons, the sketch was developed into a half-hour prime time show and became Fox's first series to land in the Top 30 ratings in a season — Since its debut on December 17,episodes of The Simpsons have been broadcast. It is the longest-running American sitcom, and the longest-running American scripted primetime television seriesboth in terms of seasons and number of episodes. On October 30,a video game was released. The Simpsons was renewed on February 6, for a thirty-first and thirty-second season. The Simpsons is a joint production by Gracie Films and 20th Television. The Simpsons received acclaim throughout its first nine [8] [9] or ten [10] [11] seasons, which are generally considered its "golden age". It has been criticized for a perceived decline in quality since. Time named it the 20th century's best television series, [12] and Erik Adams of The A. Club named it "television's crowning achievement regardless of format". Homer's exclamatory catchphrase " D'oh! The Simpsons is known for its wide ensemble of main and supporting characters ensemble cast. The main characters are the Simpson family, who live in a fictional " Middle Bart Simpsons Guide to Life: From the Worlds Leading Authority on Practically Everything " town of Springfield. He is married to Marge Bouviera stereotypical American housewife and mother. They have three children: Barta ten-year-old troublemaker and prankster; Lisaa precocious eight-year-old activist; and Maggiethe baby of the family who rarely speaks, but communicates by sucking on a pacifier. Although the family is dysfunctional, many episodes examine their relationships and bonds with each other and they are often shown to care about one another. Grampa Simpson has had starring roles in several episodes. The creators originally intended many of these characters as one-time jokes or for fulfilling needed functions in the town. A number of them have gained expanded roles and subsequently starred in their own episodes. Despite the depiction of yearly milestones such as holidays or birthdays passing, the characters do not age between episodes either physically or in stated ageand generally appear just as they did when the series began. The series uses a floating timeline in which episodes generally take place in the year the episode is produced even though the characters do not age. Flashbacks and flashforwards do occasionally depict the characters at other points in their lives, with the timeline of these depictions also generally floating relative to the year the episode is produced. For example, in the episode " I Married Marge ", Bart who is always 10 years old appears to be born in or But in the episode " And Maggie Makes Three ", Maggie who always appears to be around 1 year old appears to be born in or In the episode " Lisa's First Word ", Lisa who is always 8 is shown to have been born in A canon of the show does exist, although Treehouse of Horror episodes and any fictional story told within the series are typically non-canon. However, continuity is inconsistent and limited in The Simpsons. For example, Krusty the Clown may be able to read in one episode, but not in another — however he is consistently portrayed as being Jewish and that his rabbi father has since died. Lessons learned by the family in one episode may be forgotten in the next. Some examples of limited continuity include Sideshow Bob's appearances where Bart and Lisa flashback at all the crimes he committed in Springfield or when the characters try to remember things that happened in previous episodes. The Simpsons takes place in the fictional American town of Springfield in an unknown and impossible-to-determine U. The show is intentionally evasive in regard to Springfield's location. He "figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, 'This will be cool; everyone will think it's their Bart Simpsons Guide to Life: From the Worlds Leading Authority on Practically Everything. When producer James L. Brooks was working on the television variety show The Tracey Ullman Showhe decided to include small animated sketches before and after the commercial breaks. Having seen one of cartoonist Matt Groening 's Life in Hell comic strips, Brooks asked Groening to pitch an idea for a series of animated shorts. Groening initially intended to present an animated version of his Life in Hell series. He therefore chose another approach while waiting in the lobby of Brooks's office for the pitch meeting, hurriedly formulating his version of a dysfunctional family that became the Simpsons. However, the animators merely re-traced his drawings, which led to the crude appearance of the characters in the initial shorts. Ina team of production companies adapted The Simpsons into a half-hour series for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The team included the Klasky Csupo animation house. Brooks negotiated a provision in the contract with the Fox network that prevented Fox from interfering with the show's Bart Simpsons Guide to Life: From the Worlds Leading Authority on Practically Everything. The suit said she should receive a share of the profits of The Simpsons [33] —a claim rejected by the courts.

Douglas Rushkoff The Simpsons are the closest thing in America to a national media literacy program. By pretending to be a kids’ cartoon, the show gets away with murder: that is, the virtual murder of our most coercive media iconography and techniques. For what began as entertaining interstitial material for an alternative network variety show has revealed itself, in the twenty-first century, as nothing short of a media revolu tion. Maybe that’s the very reason The Simpsons works so well. The Simpsons were bom to provide The Tracey Ullman Show with a way of cutting to commercial breaks. Their very function as a form of media was to bridge the discontinuity inherent to broadcast television. They existed to pave over the breaks. But rather than dampening the effects of these gaps in the broadcast stream, they heightened them. They acknowledged the jagged edges and recombinant forms behind the glossy patina of American television and, by doing so, initiated its deconstruction. They exist in the outlying suburbs of the American media landscape: the hinter lands of the Fox network. And living as they do—simultaneously a part of yet separate from the mainstream, primetime fare—they are able to bear witness to our cultural formulations and then comment upon them.

Learning Objectives Throughout this course, we will work to develop our comedic voices through the medium of sketch — comedic explorations of concepts, characters and situations. We will learn sketch writing structure through the study of prominent existing sketches, and techniques for sketch performance and character creation. Students are expected to generate a high volume of comedic concepts and written material to serve their own creative exploration, and their own work ethic and writing practice. Students are also expected to serve the needs of the group, and work toward building a true comedy ensemble. Although we will be working toward a final workshop presentation, this course is focused on process over product — you are not expected to be funny 100% of the time, or even 10% of the time. You are expected to be brave, be open-minded, and stretch out of your comfort zone to explore and strengthen your own unique comedic voice.

  • The Simpsons Tapped out - Analysis and Proposed Events Overview
The Simpsons Tapped Out - Analysis and Proposed Events Overview Players like myself have faithfully enjoyed The Simpsons Tapped Out (TSTO) for several years. The developers have continued to expand the game and provide updates in response to player feedback. This has been evident in tools such as the IRS Building tap radius, the Introduction Unemployment Office Job Manager and the Cut & Paste feature, all of which are greatly appreciated by players and have extended the playability of TSTO for many of us who would have otherwise found the game too tedious to continue once their Springfields grew so large. Notably, as respects Events, positive reactive efforts were identifiable in the 2017 Winter Event and the modified use of craft currency. As evident from the forums, many dedicated and heavily-invested players have grown tired with some of TSTO's stale mechanics and gameplay, as well as the proliferation of uninspired content, much of which has little to no place in Springfield, if even the world of "The Simpsons." This Premise player attitude is often displayed in the later stages of major Events as players begin to sense monotony due to a lack in changes throughout an Event, resulting in a feeling that one is merely grinding through the game to stock up on largely unwanted Items. Content-driven major Events geared toward "The Simpsons" version of Springfield with changes of pace, more like mini-Events, and the Solution addition of new Effects, enabling a variety of looks while injecting a new degree of both familiarity and customization for players. The proposed Events and gameplay changes are steeped in canonical content rather than original content.

AMERICAN MONSTERS: TABLOID MEDIA AND THE SATANIC PANIC, 1970-2000 A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Sarah A. Hughes May 2015 Examining Committee Members: Kenneth L. Kusmer, Advisory Chair, History Carolyn Kitch, Journalism Susan E. Klepp, History Elaine Tyler May, External Member, University of Minnesota, American Studies © Copyright 2015 by Sarah A. Hughes All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT “American Monsters: Tabloid Media and the Satanic Panic, 1970-2000,” analyzes an episode of national hysteria that dominated the media throughout most of the 1980s. Its origins, however, go back much farther and its consequences for the media would extend into subsequent decades. Rooted in the decade’s increasingly influential conservative political ideology, the satanic panic involved hundreds of accusations that devil-worshipping pedophiles were operating America’s white middle-class suburban daycare centers. Communities around the country became embroiled in criminal trials against center owners, the most publicized of which was the McMartin Preschool trial in Manhattan Beach, California. The longest and most expensive trial in the nation’s history, the McMartin case is an important focal point of this project. In the 1990s, judges overturned the life sentences of defendants in most major cases, and several prominent journalists and lawyers condemned the phenomenon as a witch-hunt. They accurately understood it to be a powerful delusion, or what contemporary cultural theorist Jean Baudrillard termed a “hyperreality,” in which audiences confuse the media universe for real life. Presented mainly through tabloid television, or “infotainment,” and integral to its development, influence, and success, the panic was a manifestation of the hyperreal.
