  • Trichuriasis Importance Trichuriasis Is Caused by Various Species of Trichuris, Nematode Parasites Also Known As Whipworms
Trichuriasis Importance Trichuriasis is caused by various species of Trichuris, nematode parasites also known as whipworms. Whipworms are common in the intestinal tracts of mammals, Trichocephaliasis, although their prevalence may be low in some host species or regions. Infections are Trichocephalosis, often asymptomatic; however, some individuals develop diarrhea, and more serious Whipworm Infestation effects, including dysentery, intestinal bleeding and anemia, are possible if the worm burden is high or the individual is particularly susceptible. T. trichiura is the species of whipworm normally found in humans. A few clinical cases have been attributed to Last Updated: January 2019 T. vulpis, a whipworm of canids, and T. suis, which normally infects pigs. While such zoonotic infections are generally thought uncommon, recent surveys found T. suis or T. vulpis eggs in a significant number of human fecal samples in some countries. T. suis is also being investigated in human clinical trials as a therapeutic agent for various autoimmune and allergic diseases. The rationale for its use is the correlation between an increased incidence of these conditions and reduced levels of exposure to parasites among people in developed countries. There is relatively little information about cross-species transmission of Trichuris spp. in animals. However, the eggs of T. trichiura have been detected in the feces of some pigs, dogs and cats in tropical areas with poor sanitation, raising the possibility of reverse zoonoses. One double-blind, placebo-controlled study investigated T. vulpis for therapeutic use in dogs with atopic dermatitis, but no significant effects were found. Etiology Trichuriasis is caused by members of the genus Trichuris, nematode parasites in the family Trichuridae.

However, genetic data on rodent whipworms are still scarce, with only one published whole genome (Trichuris muris) despite an increasing demand for whole genome data. We sequenced the whipworm mitogenomes from seven rodent hosts belonging to three biogeographic regions (Palearctic, Afrotropical, and Indomalayan), including three previously described species: Trichuris cossoni, Trichuris arvicolae, and Trichuris mastomysi. We assembled and annotated two complete and five almost complete mitogenomes (lacking only the long non-coding region) and performed comparative genomic and phylogenetic analyses. All the Citation: Petružela, J.; Ribas, A.; mitogenomes are circular, have the same organisation, and consist of 13 protein-coding, 2 rRNA, and de Bellocq, J.G. Mitogenomics and 22 tRNA genes. Alicata HAWAII AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION COLLEGE OF TROPICAL AGRICULTURE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII HONOLULU, HAWAII NOVEMBER 1964 TECHNICAL BULLETIN No. 61 FOREWORD Parasites probably were introduced into Hawaii with the first colonization by man perhaps fifteen hundred or more years ago. However, parasitism appears not to have been important or at least not recognized until about 1800 when European and American ships began to call frequently. Since that time, parasites have been found in many species; for instance, in birds, in cluding chickens, turkeys, pigeons, pheasants, doves, ducks, sparrows, herons, coots, and quails, and in mammals, including mice, rats, mongooses, rabbits, cats, dogs, pigs, sheep, cattle, horses, and man. There is a certain uniqueness in the compressed history of the infestations paralleling the sweeping spread of virus diseases when introduced into new territories. 'I"he reports of these parasitic diseases have heretofore been 'i\Tidely scat tered in the literature, and Professor Alicata's publication now provides an orderly and systematic presentation of the entire field. He considers in sequence the considerable number of diseases reported to be caused in Hawaii by protozoa, the very large number caused by nemathelminthes, and the smaller group caused by platyhelminthes. rrhis publication will furnish basic information for future parasitologists who in turn will be immensely grateful. Journal of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science Vol 53, No 6 Copyright 2014 November 2014 by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science Pages 668–674 Molecular Phylogeny of Pseudocapillaroides xenopi (Moravec et Cosgrov 1982) and Development of a Quantitative PCR Assay for its Detection in Aquarium Sediment Sanford H Feldman* and Micaela P Ramirez We used high-fidelity PCR to amplify a portion of the small ribosomal subunit (18S rRNA) ofPseudocapillaroides xenopi, a nematode that parasitizes the skin of Xenopus laevis. The 1113-bp amplicon was cloned, sequenced, and aligned with sequences from 22 other nematodes in the order Trichocephalida; Caenorhabditis elegans was used as the outgroup. Maximum- likelihood and Bayesian inference phylogenetic analyses clustered P. xenopi in a clade containing only members of the genus Capillaria. Our analyses support the following taxonomic relationships: 1) members of the family Trichuridae form a clade distinct from those in the family Trichocephalida; 2) members of the genera Trichuris and Capillaria form 2 distinct clades within the family Trichuridae; and 3) the genus Trichuris includes 2 distinct clades, one representing parasites that infect herbivores and the other representing parasites that infect omnivores and carnivores. Using 18S rRNA sequence unique to P. xenopi, we developed a TaqMan quantitative PCR assay to detect this P. xenopi sequence in total DNA isolated from aquarium sediment. The assay’s lower limit of detection is 3 copies of target sequence in a reaction. The specificity of our assay was validated by using negative control DNA from 9 other pathogens of Xenopus. Our quantitative PCR assay detected P.

  • New Host Record of Some Gastrointestinal Parasites of Irrawaddy Squirrel (Callosciurus Pygerythrus) from Chittagong, Bangladesh
Bangladesh J. Zool. 46(2): 87-103, 2018 ISSN: 0304-9027 (print) 2408-8455 (online) NEW HOST RECORD OF SOME GASTROINTESTINAL PARASITES OF IRRAWADDY SQUIRREL (CALLOSCIURUS PYGERYTHRUS) FROM CHITTAGONG, BANGLADESH Md. Afzal Hussain*, Rajib Acharjee and Benazir Ahmed Department of Zoology, University of Chittagong, Chittagong-4331, Bangladesh Abstract: Gastrointestinal (GI) tract of 60 Irrawaddy squirrels (Callosciurus pygerythrus) were collected between September 2013 and August 2014 from four different spots of Chittagong University campus and its adjacent areas to study the ento-helminth fauna. Eight different parasite species were identified - one belonging to Cestoda and represented by Hymenolepis diminuta, and the remaining seven were to Nematoda viz., Strongyloides callosciurus, Trichuris ovis, Monodontus sp., Cyclodontostomum purvisi, Moguranema nipponicum, Ascarops talpa and Syphacia obvelata. The nematodes were found as dominant species most preferably inhabiting the small intestine. The present host is the new host record for all of these parasites and S. callosciurus, T. ovis, Monodontus sp., M. nipponicum and A. talpa are the new records for Bangladesh too. All these parasites have very wide host specificity, though most of them are restricted to various rodent hosts but H. diminuta and S. callosciurus were found to have more wider specificity, including other vertebrates too. All identified parasites might have been acquired from the environment where the host inhabits, since host specificity perspective no parasites were found to be specific to the present host. H. diminuta and Syphacia obvelata might have zoonotic role to other wild animals and human and vice versa. Key words: Irrawaddy squirrel, Rodents, Helminths, Zoonosis, Host specificity INTRODUCTION Squirrels, member of the family Sciuridae, are small or medium size rodents and indigenous to the Americas, Eurasia, and Africa, and have been introduced to Australia (Seebeck 2013).
