  • Steve Earle Townes Biography
Steve Earle Townes Biography Steve Earle had two reasons for coming out with this long-planned tribute to Townes Van Zandt now. The first reason is practical. Earle is currently pushing himself to finish a years-in-the-making novel, and he wants to see it in print before the publishing business goes belly up. The second is a more personal concern. Like all artists worthy of the name, Steve Earle loves the truth, and in the case of Van Zandt, he sees that the waters are muddying before his eyes. Very often over periods of years, the truth first becomes myth and myth later becomes truth. In regards to his teacher, hero and friend Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle was not about to let that happen. “I’m very thankful that when I got out of jail I started meeting people like Jay Farrar and other people his age that knew Townes chapter and verse,” he says. “I’ve always been very thankful for that. But a lot of what powered that is a take on roots music that comes from alternative music, and the crowd that kind of attached itself to Townes was the same kind of people that have White Light / White Heat in the front of their record collection so everybody knows how intense they are when they have a party. I love that record, but I don’t think I’ve listened to it all the way through since I bought it.” “I’m tryin’ not to kill myself,” he laughs. Van Zandt’s reputation has been under something of an overhaul since the dawn of the 1990s.

SWEDISH SINGER-SONGWRITER CHRISTIAN KJELLVANDER RELEASES LIVE ALBUM COMPRISED OF TOWNES VAN ZANDT COVERS It’s no secret that Christian Kjellvander is hugely inspired by american singer- songwriters like Neil Young, Gram Parsons and Townes Van Zandt. In 2003 Kjellvander played a concert at Mondo in Stockholm where he paid his dues to Van Zandt with a setlist comprised of his classics. The concert was recorded and later sold at shows in very limited quantity as 100 burned CDRs under the title An Evening Of Townes Van Zandt. Those copies sold out almost immediately and since then that recording has been something like the holy grail for Kjellvander fans. Now small danish label Accelerator Records gives An Evening Of Townes Van Zandt the proper release it deserves, when they put out a limited run of 250 handnumbered copies on 180gr vinyl. ALBUM Christian Kjellvander comments on the release: Christian Kjellvander: Live at Mondo LABEL “People have been coming up to me for years asking when I’m gonna release the Townes Accelerator Records CATALOGUE NUMBER night live recordings officially....this is about as close as I will get. ACR002 RELEASE DATE March 2 - 2018 I don’t really remember why the night came about...but I think there was a club that had FORMATS lp artists do a set of their favorite artists songs....I learned a few Townes songs on the bus up to Stockholm, I distinctly remember learning “Tower Song” but for some reason didn’t play it....I remember I played it the next night because my then girlfriend thought it was a new song about us...we broke up shortly after.

  • Townes Van Zandt 2
Townes Van Zandt By Dave Hoekstra April 22, 1990 The blown-gasket blues of Townes Van Zandt suggests he might have been another Hank Williams Sr., while smooth-driving songcrafting points toward commercial country pop potential. But Townes Van Zandt is content with being Townes Van Zandt. The reclusive fortysomething Texas singer-songwriter is best known for writing "Poncho and Lefty," covered by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, and "If I Needed You," which has been recorded by Emmylou Harris. Van Zandt cuts to the heart with the warble of a process server and the wisdom of a surly judge. The simple power of his music presents more complex paths. "If you listen to the music, you do get that impression," Van Zandt said in an interview from his Nashville, Tenn., home. "But if you live the life and are buffeted by all the other things that happens to one, it seems that just from lifestyle, I never could have been anything other than this kind of traveling folk singer. I'm just a lone voice on the prairie. "I was real wild and crazy for a long time. I had no address, phone or anything like that. I lived in the mountains and drank all the time. I gambled. I almost died a few times, but I'm past all that. It was Grand Ole Opry material, right? "I'd be too bashful to be anything else." Van Zandt will make a rare local appearance with Guy Clark and Robert Earl Keen Jr., in "An Evening of Texas Songwriters" at 7:30 p.m.

“Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and I’ll stand on Bob Dylan’s coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that.” - Steve Earle Steve Earle’s new album TOWNES , is his highly anticipated follow up to the Grammy® Award winning album WASHING T ON SQUARE SERENADE . The 15-song set is comprised of songs written by Earle’s friend and mentor, the late singer-songwriter, Townes Van Zandt. The songs selected for TOWNES were the ones that meant the most to Earle and the ones he personally connected to. Some of the selections chosen were songs that Earle has played his entire career (Pancho and Lefty, Lungs, White Freightliner Blues). He learned the song (Quicksilver Daydreams of) Maria directly from Van Zandt. Earle taught himself Marie and Rake specifically for making this record. Earle recorded the New York sessions solo and then added the other instruments later on in order to preserve the spirit of Van Zandt’s original solo performances to the best of his recollection. The track Lungs, was produced and mixed by the Dust Brothers’ John King and features Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine/The Nightwatchman on electric guitar. 1. Pancho and Lefty 2. White Freightliner Blues 3. Colorado Girl 4. Where I Lead Me Marketing Drivers 5. Lungs • Rolling Stone: Multi-page Steve Earle profile confirmed 6. ABSTRACT Days Up and Down They Come: Townes Van Zandt and the Search for the Meaning of Life and Death Hunter H. Hewell Director: Prof. Robert Darden Texas has had a long standing tradition of excellent songwriting, and has been known to produce outstanding songwriters in each generation. Perhaps no time was filled with more prolific Texas songwriters than the late 1970’s in which artists such as Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings dominated the country music scene. However, no songwriter from that era is as highly regarded in folklore and legend as the portentous Townes Van Zandt. Despite a long struggle with alcohol and drugs, Van Zandt's songwriting abilities have been unrivaled in music. Each of his songs have a literary quality that allows them to tap into otherworldly truths. Through study of his life and music, I have attempted to find out what Van Zandt has to say about what it means to live and die, topics on which he frequently writes. The music of Van Zandt gives an interesting look on the meaning of life, death, and sorrow given from the perspective of a true artist and poet.
