Street Date: May 12, 2009 “Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and I’ll stand on Bob Dylan’s coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that.” - Steve Earle Steve Earle’s new album TOWNES , is his highly anticipated follow up to the Grammy® Award winning album WASHING T ON SQUARE SERENADE . The 15-song set is comprised of songs written by Earle’s friend and mentor, the late singer-songwriter, Townes Van Zandt. The songs selected for TOWNES were the ones that meant the most to Earle and the ones he personally connected to. Some of the selections chosen were songs that Earle has played his entire career (Pancho and Lefty, Lungs, White Freightliner Blues). He learned the song (Quicksilver Daydreams of) Maria directly from Van Zandt. Earle taught himself Marie and Rake specifically for making this record. Earle recorded the New York sessions solo and then added the other instruments later on in order to preserve the spirit of Van Zandt’s original solo performances to the best of his recollection. The track Lungs, was produced and mixed by the Dust Brothers’ John King and features Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine/The Nightwatchman on electric guitar. 1. Pancho and Lefty 2.     Steve Earle Townes Biography Steve Earle had two reasons for coming out with this long-planned tribute to Townes Van Zandt now. The first reason is practical. Earle is currently pushing himself to finish a years-in-the-making novel, and he wants to see it in print before the publishing business goes belly up. The second is a more personal concern. Like all artists worthy of the name, Steve Earle loves the truth, and in the case of Van Zandt, he sees that the waters are muddying before his eyes. Very often over periods of years, the truth first becomes myth and myth later becomes truth. In regards to his teacher, hero and friend Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle was not about to let that happen. “I’m very thankful that when I got out of jail I started meeting people like Jay Farrar and other people his age that knew Townes chapter and verse,” he says. “I’ve always been very thankful for that.     TEN Wildness, Eschatology, and Enclosure in the Songs of Townes Van Zandt Michael B. MacDonald INTRODUCTION Loss and tragedy were present in the earliest days of American country music in part because it emerged from the great urbanization of America. This was a time of massive relocation when American life quickly and violently became city life. Country music, like folk music before it, was born from the shock of urbanization. Lola Scobey, in the liner notes of Van Zandt' s 1978 release Flyin' Shoes, remarked: "Townes carries the terror and the sorrow of a deeply sensitive man who has looked into the abyss and seen... the abyss." But this is too romantic; there is no abyss. Van Zandt looked at the folk on Main Street and wrote about it; however, this makes it sound too obvious, perhaps too na1ve. Van Zandt is anything but naive. His observations cut to the bone and reverberate upon the fractured psyche of America gone wrong, an America suffering from loss. I would contend that he wrote about the dark side of the American dream, or, perhaps, that he wrote mini-docu­ mentaries of the American dream becoming nightmare. However, sloppy words such as these do Van Zandt an injustice. These are the words of platitude and marketing, of Hallmark sentimentality. Van Zandt does not choose these words; instead, he strikes out against marketing corpora­ tions and entertainment companies who ingest romanticism and replace history with an imaginary vision of an ideal past.     Susanna Clark March 11, 1939-June 27, 2012 Susanna Talley Clark’s talents transcended songwriting. She was a hit songwriter, an accomplished painter, and an extraordinary muse to many celebrated artists. During the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, Susanna hosted an artist salon in Nashville, where important characters of the growing Americana music movement gathered to share ideas and swap songs. In addition to her husband Guy Clark, Susanna inspired music luminaries Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Vince Gill, Carlene Carter, Jerry Jeff Walker and countless other writers and artists. Born in Atlanta, Texas in 1939, Susanna met songwriters Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt in the late 1960s. She moved to Houston with Guy in 1970. Later that year, Susanna and Guy moved to Los Angeles together and then to Nashville when Guy got his first publishing deal in 1971. Van Zandt came to Nashville to be the best man when Guy and Susanna married in 1972. He lived with them for the first eight months of their marriage. Guy and Susanna were married. Guy and Townes were best friends. Susanna and Townes were soulmates. Although Guy got most of the credit, it was Susanna who dreamed up and began writing the timeless songs “Black Haired Boy,” (about Townes), “Old Friends,” and “The Cape.” She brought lyrics and simple chords to Guy and he helped her finish them. Susanna and Townes co-wrote “Heavenly Houseboat Blues” and Townes recorded it on The Late Great Townes Van ​ Zandt. Susanna became the hit songwriter in Clark family when she wrote “I’ll Be Your San ​ Antone Rose and Texas artist Dottsy took the song to the Billboard Top 10 in 1975.

I had no inkling, for example, that the producer of “All Wrapped Up in Cash” had bought the Texas School Book Depository, or that Ruby Braff had been such a character; I was just attracted to the covers. Similarly with this album, I had never heard of the Willis Brothers or Starday Records or anything else connected to it. It just appealed to me as a great truck­driving album cover – which, as mentioned in my introductory post, is one of my favorite genres. So it was with some surprise that I discovered that the otherwise innocuous Willis Brothers are notable for being the group that first backed up the immortal Hank Williams. Known as the Oklahoma Wranglers at the time, they were already associated with Nashville legend Fred Rose and the relatively new Sterling Records label. One day Rose asked them, according to Hank Williams: the Biography , if they would “mind” backing up Williams, who was making the trip up from Alabama to do his first real recording.
