Questo quesito me lo sono posto più volte in quest’ultimo anno di lavoro durante il quale si è concretizzato questo progetto. Quando negli anni del liceo cominciai a conoscere il grande patrimonio artistico del nostro paese, mi resi conto come l’opera d’arte trasmettesse emozioni diverse rispetto a quelle che la vita affettiva mi aveva fino ad allora trasmesso: mi lasciava un senso di appagamento multisensoriale e di stimolo a sempre nuove conoscenze culturali trasversali. Quando arrivò la difficile scelta della Facoltà Universitaria, fui molto attratto dalla Medicina anche per le conoscenze che permettevano di avere a che fare sempre e comunque con l’uomo. Al tempo stesso fui assalito dalla paura che la componente scientifica potesse inaridirmi e allontanarmi da quel meraviglioso mondo artistico. Fu il grande senso di concretezza di mio padre che mi fece capire che avrei potuto mantenere vivo il mio interesse per l’Arte in tutte le occasioni che la vita da medico mi avrebbe presentato. L’occasione di presiedere il 50° Congresso Nazionale di Chirurgia della Mano, mi ha fatto scaturire l’idea di organizzare, come evento parallelo, una Mostra d’arte. Poi il destino ha fatto il resto: la collaborazione con Alfonso Pluchinotta, grande collezionista di arte antropomorfica, che mi ha suggerito una originalissima mostra di sculture, l’incontro con Annamaria Sandonà, appassionata docente di arte contemporanea presso la nostra Università, la entusiastica risposta di Artisti e collezionisti, primi fra tutti Renzo Mantero. Adesso, rivedendo il catalogo delle opere che siamo riusciti a portare a Padova vi trovo artisti consacrati e altri meno conosciuti, ma tutti mi han- no emozionato nella scelta del soggetto mano, interpretato secondo canoni diversi e con la volontà di esprimere sensazioni diverse. Tutte le ho trovate coincidenti con la mia emozione quando in sala operatoria affronto una mano distrutta da un incidente, da una malattia, o da un tumore, sempre alla ricerca di salvarne, per quanto possibile, la sua funzione di presa (opposizione pollice-dita lunghe), di sensibilità (ricostruzione dei polpastrelli che sono stati paragonati agli occhi della mano), di movimento tridimensionale nello spazio (chirurgia artro-tendinea). Spero che anche per voi questo libro e questa mostra diano nuova luce all’importanza della mano. Why should a plastic surgeon, who also practices Surgery of the Hand, one day decide to organize an exhibition of sculpture of the hand? I’ve asked myself this question more than once during this last year in which the project has been in the works. My acquaintance with Italy’s great art heritage goes back to my high school days, when I first realized that a work of art could transmit emotions that differed from those my daily life had given me up to then. Art gave me a sense of multi-sensorial gratification, eliciting new aspects of cross-cultural knowledge. When the time came to choose my university faculty, I decided on Medicine because the knowledge acquired would permit one to always be involved with the human being. My fear that the scientific component might dry up my sensitivity to that marvellous world of art to which I had been introduced was laid to rest by my father who with his down to earth observation made me realize that a degree in medicine would give me more of a chance to keep my interest in art alive whenever my life as a physician allowed. The chance to preside over the 50° National Congress of Surgery of the Hand sparked the idea of organizing an art exhibit as a parallel event. Fate did the rest: collaboration with Alfonso Pluchinotta, great collector of anthropomorphic art, who proposed an original exhibit on sculpture, the meeting with Annamaria Sandonà, a passionate docent of contemporary art at the University, the enthusiastic response of artists and col- lectors, first among them Renzo Mantero. Now perusing the catalogue of the works we have succeeded in bringing to Padua, I find artists who are well-known together with others almost un- known. Yet independently of their fame, I was thrilled by the way in which they interpreted their subject, the hand, according to different canons and expressing different sensations. They are the same emotions I feel in the operating room when I find myself faced with a hand destroyed in an accident, or a disease, or by a tumor, and the challenge is to attempt to save, as much as possible, its gripping function (thumb-finger opposition), sensibility (reconstruction of the fingertips, which have been called the eyes of the hand), the three-dimensional movement in space (arthro-tendon surgery). In the hopes for you too the book and the exhibit will throw new light on the importance of the hand.
