Run PLX. Interpreter. This Is Done by Typing PLX to the PERQ Installation of POS Version B.l Donald Scelza 4 December, 1980 Copyright (C) Three Rivers Computer Corperation, 1980 This document gives a short description of how to bring up version B.l of POS on your PERQ. 1) Run PLX. This is done by typing PLX to the PERQ command interpreter. 2) Place the PERQ B.l Distribution Floppy into the floppy drive. 3) Retrive the two command files Bin.Cmd and Src.Cmd from this floppy. 4) Execute both of these command files. 5) Exit PLX. 6) Create a B.l boot file. This is done by typing System.l to the PERQ command interpreter. This will create a file on the disk named System.I.Boot • . 7)\...._.is.,Itnow time to write"the boot file on the hard disk. This is done using the program WriteBoot. To run this program type WriteBoot to the command interpreter. Answer the questions from WriteBoot in the following manner: Do you want to write a boot file•••• Answer YES Write boot file to hard disk •••• Answer YES Boot microcode •••• Type <cr> Are you writing a system •••• Answer Yes System version number •••• Type I Interpreter microcode •••• Type <cr> 8) You have now written the boot file with the new system. If. you press the boot button, version B.I of POS should start. If the system does not run, insert the A.IS boot floppy and boot the machine. After POS A.IS is runnin~ "repeat the above procedure. If B.l still will not boot, contact the techinical support.person at Three Rivers. - 1 User Interface Changes in System B.l Donald Scelza 4 December, 1980 Copyright (C) Three Rivers Computer Corperation, 1980 This document gives a list of the changes to the POS User Interface that have been made in version B.l. The only user visable change to the POS User Interface is that it now remembers the name of the last file used in some system commands. This means that the file name used in the last Edit, Compile or Link is remembered. This allows the user to run any of these processors on a single file without retyping the file name. If the user typed nEdit Foo" then the editor would try to edit the file Foo.Pas. If the file were a Pascal program then the user may type nCompilen to compile Foo. He could then type "Link" to create Foo.Run. Summary The facilities of the PS-algol programming language are described in this paper to show how they may be used to provide an integrated programming support environment. The persistent store mechanism and the secure transaction facilities provide the basic environment in which an integrated system may be implemented. In particular the paper makes use of the data type picture of PS-algol to show how such an environment may be built for a graphics system ideal for use with a medium range computer workstation. An implementation of a picture editor on the ICL PERQ workstation is described to show the utility of the system. " .......... _---_ ... --·--··--~·;s L- '3~~q PhD Thesis The University of Newcastle upon Tyne Computing Laboratory August, 1987 ABSTRACT In this thesis the problem ofload sharing in distributed computer systems is investigated. Fundamental issues that need to be resolved in order to implement a load sharing scheme in a distributed system are identified and possible solutions suggested. A load sharing scheme has been designed and implemented on an existing Unix United system. The performance of this load sharing scheme is then measured for different types of programs. It is demonstrated that a load sharing scheme can be implemented on the Unix United systems using the existing mechanisms provided by the Newcastle Connection, and without making any significant changes to the existing software. It is concluded that under some circumstances a substantial improvement in the system performance can be obtained by the load sharing scheme. This implementation is very similar to that described in RSRE Report 81009, ( Flex Firmware by -I Currie, Edwards and Foster) generally referred to as the Logica implementation. This is rather a misnomer, since although Logica built the hardware (to an RSRE design) on which it was implemented, Logica had nothing to do with the micro-coding or software construction of the Flex architecture. The differences between the Perq and Logica implementation arise mainly from the properties of the underlying hardware. In the Logica Flex, for example, each byte in main-store was in fact nine bits long rather than eight s the extra bits (the tag bits) were used to distinguish between pointers and non-pointers ie between capabilities and scalar data.
