The Royal Highland Fusiliers Museum

James Youll Turnbull was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest & most prestigious award for gallantry for most conspicuous bravery & devotion to duty at the Leipzig Salient during the Battle of the Somme. Sergeant Turnbull of the 17th Battalion (Glasgow Commercials) of The Highland Light Infantry, captured & defended “almost single-handedly” an important post; dying by a sniper’s shot later in the day (1 July 1916). Sgt Turnbull was honoured by the laying of a paving stone at the Summerlee Museum of People’s Palace, Glasgow, on the centenary of his death.
