eNews News for members of the Entomological Society of America April 25, 2012 The 2012 YouTube Your Entomology Contest is Open ESA has begun accepting entries for the 2012 YouTube Your Entomology Video Contest. For the fourth year in a row, this contest gives ESA members the opportunity to showcase their talents and creativity through video in four different categories. Winners will receive $200.00 and a trophy at Entomology 2012. This year's deadline is September 17, 2012. Click here for more information and to view videos from previous years. May 15 is the Last Day to Submit Calendar Photos ESA is looking for the best insect photos to grace our 2013 World of Insects Calendar. Photos should be of the highest aesthetic and technical quality and must fit the requirements of the Calendar Committee. The deadline is May 15, 2012. Click here for more information. Prepare to Submit Your Presentations for Entomology 2012 Get your your paper and poster submissions ready! The abstract submission sites will be open from May 1 until June 11. Note that for Entomology 2012, a speaker may present up to two invited (e.g. symposia) oral presentations OR one invited and one submitted oral presentation. In addition to the above, any speaker may present one poster. Students -- Reserve a Table at Entomology 2012! ESA is offering complimentary display tables at Entomology 2012 for student clubs, where you can promote your university club and sell your logo items. To reserve your table in the Exhibit Hall, please contact Mary Falcone at [email protected]. Update Your Contact Info Before the Election ESA's national elections will open on July 12. Before taking off for your summer activities, please check to be sure ESA has a valid email address for you so that you can vote in the election. New JIPM Article on Bark Beetle Management in Southern Pine Forests According to a new, open-access article in the Journal of Integrated Pest Management, preventative measures are most effective in minimizing losses to bark beetles, and several factors should be considered in planning bark beetle management in southern pine forests. Read more... April 25 is World Malaria Day According to the World Health Organization, in 2010 about 3.3 billion people -- almost half of the world's population -- were at risk of malaria. Every year, this leads to about 216 million malaria cases and an estimated 655,000 deaths. People living in the poorest countries are the most vulnerable. Click here for more information. Invitation to Participate in the 2012 Student Debates For this year's Student Debates at Entomology 2012, the ESA Student Affairs Committee has launched an exciting new format where teams will have more choices in the positions they are debating, and the topics will focus on solving global issues that face society and science. Register Now for the North Central Branch Meeting The ESA North Central Branch meeting will be held June 3-6, 2012 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Special events and related meetings are encouraged during Entomology 2012. Based on the type of event and the date requested, signage, AV equipment, and other support services may be available at no charge to universities and other non-profits hosting these events. Jones, ACE, an entomologist at Western Exterminator Co. in Las Vegas, NV, was featured in a local news video on bark scorpions. Watch the video. Insect is Named after Yves Alarie Yves Alarie, research director of development and creativity at Laurentian University, had a newly discovered species of water beetle named after him. Full article. Billy Blasingame Opens New Business Billy Blasingame, ACE recently opened Blasingame Pest Management, in McDonough, GA. His wife Shayne will handle the administrative duties, and his father Bill Blasingame, Sr. will be an advisor. Full article. Kathy Heinsohn Presents at the Food Safety Summit Kathy Heinsohn, BCE, an entomologist with American Pest, presented in-depth pest control information at the Food Safety Summit in Washington DC on April 17, 2012. Dr. Heinsohn addressed pest control issues specific to the food industry to teach about Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Full article. Gadi Reddy Moving to Montana State University Gadi V.P. Reddy, an associate professor at the Western Pacific Tropical Research Center in Guam, will soon be employed by the Montana State University Western Triangle Agricultural Research Center as a superintendent and associate professor, starting June 1, 2012. Dr. Reddy’s position will be 65% research, 10% service and outreach, and 25% administration. Karl Maramorosch Keynote Speaker in Budapest Karl Maramorosch, a professor at Rutgers University and ESA Honorary Member, was the invited keynote speaker at the Seventh Annual Conference of Bridges in Life Sciences in Budapest, Hungary, March 30-April 1, 2012. His presentation, entitled "From weed killers and cannibals to viruses, Prions and Nobel prizes" was followed by Karl's piano recital. The 240 invited graduate students and senior scientists were from Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Ukraine. Gretchen Paluch Named Pesticide Bureau Chief Gretchen Paluch, who previously served as the director of basic research for EcoSMART Technologies in Georgia, has been named the new pesticide bureau chief for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. Full article. Miranda Bryant Receives Grad Student Award Miranda A. Bryant, a student at the University of Wyoming, received the university's U.S. Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Internationalization. Full article. Pathipati Usha Rani Elected RES Fellow Pathipati Usha Rani, a senior principal scientist at the Biology and Biotechnology Division of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, is a newly elected Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society, thus joining the ranks of such eminent scientists as Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. Andrew Storer Receives 2012 Research Award Andrew Storer, a professor at Michigan Technological University, received the university’s 2012 Research Award for his work on the emerald ash borer and other insects and insect- borne tree diseases, such as beech bark disease, pitch canker disease, and mahogany shoot borer. Full article. Shripat Kamble Receives Distinguished Achievement Award Shripat T. Kamble, BCE, a professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has been honored with the 2012 Distinguished Achievement Award by the National Conference on Urban Entomology (NCUE). As part of this award, Dr. Kamble will present the Mallis Memorial Award Lecture at the NCUE’s opening session on May 21, 2012. Full article. Fred Gould Receives Award for Genetic Research Fred L. Gould, an entomologist at North Carolina State University, received the 2012 UNC System's O. Max Gardner Award, given to those who have made great contributions to human welfare. Gould’s research, while initially focused on agriculture, now revolves around applied evolutionary biology. Full article. Dini Miller Receives Extension Award Dini M. Miller, associate professor of entomology in Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, has received the university’s 2012 Alumni Award for Excellence in Extension. Full article. Chris Sansone Receives Superior Service Award Chris Sansone, associate department head and program leader for entomology at the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, was recently honored with the Superior Service Award in the specialist category.
