Bramall Lane first opened its doors for business in 1855 when it staged a cricket game between “the 11 and the 22”.
It held its first football match, a fundraiser for the Lancashire Mills Distress Fund on December 29th 1862 and, over the course of its existence, has staged in the region of 16 different sports within its famous boundaries.
In 1867, it held the first ever football cup final, when Hallam FC beat Norfolk to win the Youdan Cup. In 1878 the first floodlit game of football in the world was held here. In 1883 one of the first England v Scotland games outside of London or Glasgow was staged and in 1889 Sheffield’s first FA Cup Semi Final took place between PNE and WBA - the record crowd and gate receipts of over £500 led to the formation of Sheffield United FC on March 22nd of that year.
It is one of only two venues in the country to have staged Ashes Test Cricket and the FA Cup Final - the other being the Oval. It was also the stadium that saw the Blades’ Brian Deane score the Premier League’s first ever goal v Manchester United in 1992.
Cricket left the Lane in 1973 and the ground became a four sided, purely football stadium for the first time in its history.
Its record crowd was for the FA Cup 5th Round game v Leeds United in 1936 when the official crowd was recorded as 68,500 - today it is a 33,000 all seater stadium with Premier League facilities
