PACIFIC SYMPHONY’S Virtual July 4 Spectacular July 4 Activities You Can Do at Home! Since we’re not able to do activities with you in person, we’ve rounded up a few educational and musical activities you can do at home on July 4! We’ve included a recommended age range for each item so you can see at a glance what might be suitable for your young loved ones. Don’t worry—none of these activities require you to set off your own fireworks, but they’re all fun! 1. FIREWORKS IN A JAR With just a little water, oil, and food coloring in a jar, you can enjoy “fireworks” in the comfort of your own home! This activity is also a fun way for your family to explore some basic science concepts behind why this works! You may have sung it in elementary school yourself, but did you know that the song has SIX verses? Learn more about the song and its writer, Woody Guthrie, with these lessons from the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and from the Woody Guthrie Center! If you don’t have paint or watercolors on hand, you can still create your own firework art—just use crayons or markers to mimic the same shapes! John Williams
John Biography Williams Biography One of the most popular and successful American orchestral composers of the modern age, John Williams is the winner of five Academy Awards, 17 Grammys, three Golden Globes, two Emmys and five BAFTA Awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Best known for his film scores and ceremonial music, Williams is also a noted composer of concert works and a renowned conductor. Williams’ scores for such films as Jaws, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Schindler's List, as well as the Indiana Jones series, have won him multiple awards and produced best- selling recordings, and his scores for the original Star Wars trilogy transformed the landscape of Hollywood film music and became icons of American culture. Williams has composed the music and served as music director for nearly eighty films, including Saving Private Ryan, Amistad, Seven Years in Tibet, The Lost World, Rosewood, Sleepers, Nixon, Sabrina, Schindler's List, Jurassic Park, Home Alone, Far and Away, JFK, Hook, Presumed Innocent, Always, Born on the Fourth of July, the Indiana Jones trilogy, The Accidental Tourist, Empire of the Sun, The Witches of Eastwick, the Star Wars trilogy, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, The Empire Strikes Back, Superman, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jaws and Goodbye Mr. Chips. Williams has been awarded several gold and platinum records, and his score for Schindler's List earned him both an Oscar and a Grammy.
