Ancestry Report Ancestry Report What b reeds make u p Pickles? The Wisdom Panel® Insights computer algorithm performed over seven million calculations using 11 different models (from a single breed to complex combinations of breeds) to predict the most likely combination of pure and mixed breed dogs in the last 3 ancestral generations that best fit the DNA marker pattern observed in Pickles. The ancestry chart depicting the best statistical result of this analysis is shown in the picture below. See next page for more details... What does the Mixed Breed Ancestor mean for my dog? We have identified for you the 5 next best breed matches which appeared in the analysis of your dog's DNA. One or more of these breeds could have contributed to the genetic makeup of the ancestors indicated by the mixed breed icon. The breeds are listed by the relative strength of each result in our analysis with the most likely at the top of the list. There could also be a breed or breeds present in the mixed breed component that we cannot detect with our current database of purebred dogs. Plott Hound 9.15 Keeshond 7.95 Labrador 6.33 Retriever Sussex Spaniel 5.64 Chinese Shar-Pei 3.31 How Wisdom Panel Insights Works The process started when you sent a sample to our laboratory, where the DNA was extracted from the cells and examined for the 321 markers that are used in the test. The results for these markers were sent to a computer, that evaluated them using a program designed to consider all of the pedigree trees that are possible in the last three generations. The trees considered include a simple pedigree with a single breed (a likely pure-bred dog), two different breeds at the parental level (a first-generation cross), all the way up to a complex tree with eight different great-grandparent breeds allowed. Our computer used information from over 185 breeds from our breed database to fill these potential pedigrees. For each of the millions of combinations of ancestry trees built and considered, the computer gave each a score representing how well that selected combination of breeds matched to your dog’s data. The pedigree with the overall best score is the one which is shown on the ancestry chart. Only breeds that reached our set confidence threshold for reporting are reported in the ancestry chart. Bluetick Coonhound Height: 58 - 76 cm Weight (Show): 20 - 45 kg Weight (Pet): 23 - 35 kg Bluetick Ears: Muzzle: Tail: Coonhound This Coonhound is typically bred in the southern states, and has arisen through the selective breeding of the Bleu de Gascogne hound of southwest France, the English Foxhound, the cur dog, the American Foxhound, and the Black And Tan Virginia Foxhound. They are excellent hunting dogs that excel in tracking and treeing raccoons, bear and cougars. George Washington owned Bluetick Coonhounds and described their musical voices as the “bells of Moscow”. The United Kennel Club initially recognised this breed as the English Foxhound and Coonhound, which encompassed many breeds including the Bluetick, Treeing Walker and English Coonhounds. They are now recognised as separate breeds. This breed has been admitted to the Foundation Stock Service within the American Kennel Club. The Bluetick Coonhound is so named for the blue ticked (grey and white mottled) pattern in this breed. This is sometimes seen with varying shades of tan. Black patches of colour are also possible in this breed. Do you recognize any of these Bluetick Coonhound traits in PICKLES? Intelligent, alert, active, loyal family dog. They excel in tracking and hunting. They require mental and physical activity to prevent boredom and destructive behaviour. They are hounds and are natural hunters so they will run off, given the opportunity. They do not get on with non-canine pets and some may be aggressive with other dogs though this can be reduced through firm, consistent training. Can be reserved and wary of strangers, although this can be overcome through socialisation when young. They are loyal to their family and are best with older more considerate children. J indo Height: 41 - 64 cm Weight (Show): 15 - 23 kg Weight (Pet): 14 - 28 kg Jindo Ears: Muzzle: Tail: The Korean Jindo dog is a rare spitz-type hunting dog originating from the Island of Jindo in South Korea. There are no official written records of its origins, which remain unknown and speculative. This breed has been isolated on Jindo for hundreds of years and, owing to the absence of other dogs, the Jindo’s genetic pool has remained relatively pure throughout the centuries. The primary functions of the Jindo are hunting and guarding. The breed is protected under the Cultural Properties Protection Act and in 1962, the breed was recognised as the 53rd Natural Treasure by the Korean government. Jindos were used in the opening ceremony of the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul. It is illegal to export Jindos out of Korea, however many Korean-Americans have been exporting them since the mid-1980s. The breed was recognised by the United Kennel Club in 1998. The Jindo has been recorded in the Foundation Stock Service of the American Kennel Club since January 2008. The Jindo comes in three coat varieties, including red (including a deep red to a light fawn) to white (including red or gold hints on the ears or legs) or black and tan. Do you recognize any of these Jindo traits in PICKLES? Fiercely loyal, highly intelligent hunting dogs. Highly intelligent but may be wilful and stubborn and will benefit from firm and consistent handling. Make excellent guard dogs as they are highly protective of their families and may be aloof with strangers. Has an innate sense of direction probably linked to their highly tuned sense of smell. They are said to recognise and remember over 30,000 different scents. Akita Height: 61 - 71 cm Weight (Show): 30 - 50 kg Weight (Pet): 27 - 55 kg Akita Ears: Muzzle: Tail: The Akita is an ancient breed native to Akita city in the Tohoku region of Honshu. The Akita has been a symbol of health and prosperity and bears the status of an imperial symbol and guard. The breed’s history began in 1630 when Matagi Inu breeders started crossing their dogs with other breeds indigenous to the Akita region. The resulting breed was known as the Odate Inu, which were crossbred with dogs native to other regions of Japan and larger European dogs, leading to the modern day Akita. In 1931 the Akita was designated as a national monument and became the national dog of Japan. The breed was established as a purebred line at that time. Today the breed has many fans as a companion dog across Europe and North America. The Akita may be any colour including white, brindle or pinto (white with evenly placed patches covering the head and body). Black masks are possible in this breed, but not on white dogs. A white chest blaze is also sometimes seen. Do you recognize any of these Akita traits in PICKLES? Intelligent, alert, loyal, and calm dogs. Can be stubborn or wilful. Akitas enjoy dog sports such as carting, sledding, agility, tracking, rally and competitive obedience. Stubborn tendencies may be reduced by using motivational tools such as treats and favourite toys in reward-based obedience training. Reputation as a good family dog, but can develop defensive aggression if threatened, scared, or mistreated. Chow Chow Height: 46 - 56 cm Weight (Show): 18 - 29 kg Weight (Pet): 19 - 31 kg Chow Chow Ears: Muzzle: Tail: The Chow Chow is a venerable breed dating back at least two thousand years. Many believe that the breed originated in China, but there is some evidence that indicates the Chow Chow actually migrated to China from Mongolia and Manchuria. While no one can say for sure from which breeds the Chow Chow has descended, it is believed that the breed has Tibetan Mastiff and Samoyed in its bloodline. The Chow Chow served a dual purpose in China. Some were used for hunting while others were used to guard the sacred temples from evil entities. The East Indian Company brought the Chow Chow to England in 1781 and Queen Victoria received Chow Chows as a gift in 1865. During the 1880’s, the numbers of Chow Chows imported increased drastically. The Chow Chow is one of the oldest known breeds. The Chow Chow comes in either rough or smooth coat, with the rough having a more fluffy appearance. The coat may have lighter shading and be one of five colours; black, blue, cinnamon, cream, and red, which varies from a light golden to a deep mahogany. The Chow is famous for its blue mottled tongue, and sometimes has a black mask. Do you recognize any of these Chow Chow traits in PICKLES? Reputation as a loyal family dog. Reserved and wary with strangers. Independent spirit, but responds to reward-based obedience training. The Chow Chow was originally bred for various purposes including the guarding of people and/or property. Individual members of this breed will benefit from firm and dedicated training to temper this guarding tendency, and thus help to maintain safety as a household companion. humanities Article Seeing Beings: “Dog” Looks Back at “God”: Unfixing Canis familiaris in Kornél Mundruczó’s † Film Fehér isten/White God (2014) Lesley C. Pleasant Department of Foreign Languages and Cultures, University of Evansville, Evansville, IN 47714, USA; [email protected] † I have had to rely on the English subtitles of this film, since I do not speak Hungarian. I quote from the film in English, since the version to which I have had access does not give the option of Hungarian subtitles. Received: 6 July 2017; Accepted: 13 October 2017; Published: 1 November 2017 Abstract: Kornél Mundruczó’s film Fehér isten/White God (2014) portrays the human decreed options of mixed breed, abandoned dogs in the streets of Budapest in order to encourage its viewers to rethink their relationship with dogs particularly and animals in general in their own lives. By defamiliarizing the familiar ways humans gaze at dogs, White God models the empathetic gaze between species as a potential way out of the dead end of indifference and the impasse of anthropocentric sympathy toward less hierarchical, co-created urban animal publics. Keywords: animality; dogs; film; White God; empathy 1. Introduction Fehér isten/White God (2014) is not the first film use mixed breed canine actors who were saved from shelters1. The Benji films starred mixed breed rescued shelter dogs (McLean 2014, p. 7). Nor is it unique in using 250 real screen dogs instead of computer generated canines. Disney’s 1996 101 Dalmations starred around 230 Dalmation puppies and 20 adult Dalmations (McLean 2014, p. 20). It is also certainly not the only film with animal protagonists to highlight Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody # 2 in its soundtrack.

FEDERATION CYNOLOGIQUE INTERNATIONALE (AISBL) SECRETARIAT GENERAL: 13, Place Albert 1 er B – 6530 Thuin (Belgique) ______________________________________________________________________________ 04.10.2002/EN FCI-Standard N° 300 BLACK AND TAN COONHOUND This illustration does not necessarily show the ideal example of the breed. 2 ORIGIN : USA. DATE OF PUBLICATION OF THE OFFICIAL VALID STANDARD : 30.01.1991. UTILIZATION : Hound. FCI-CLASSIFICATION : Group 6 Scent hounds and related breeds. Section 1 Large-sized hounds. Without working trial. GENERAL APPEARANCE : The Black and Tan Coonhound is first and fundamentally a working dog, a trail and tree hound, capable of withstanding the rigors of winter, the heat of summer, and the difficult terrain over which he is called upon to work. Used principally for trailing and treeing raccoon, the Black an Tan Coonhound runs his game entirely by scent. The characteristics and courage of the Coonhound also make him proficient on the hunt for deer, bear, mountain lion and other big game. Judges are asked by the club sponsoring the breed to place great emphasis upon these facts when evaluating the merits of the dog. The general impression is that of power, agility and alertness. He immediately impresses one with his ability to cover the ground with powerful rhythmic strides. Considering their job as a hunting dog, the individual should exhibit moderate bone and good muscle tone. Males are heavier in bone and muscle tone than females. IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS : • Measured from the point of shoulder to the buttocks and from withers to ground the length of body is equal to or slightly greater than the height of the dog at the withers.
