Do you have the right computer? I've tried to install Linux on desktops and laptops, with successful results.

Tablet et al .: If you're going to try to install linux on tablet or single-board computer, you will have to control yourself what that supports that platform. Eg Model B 2 Processor: ARM Cortex-A7. Maybe Raspbmc or pidora will work, I have not tried it myself.

2 Switch from windows to openSUSE, by Bertil Palmqvist.

Windows 8: Do you have a Windows 8 computer, you must from Windows 8 change in the UEFI Firmware Settings to access the Boot Options and turn off SECURE BOOT and switch on the Legacy Boot in the BIOS before you replace the hard drive. Use the same method as when you want to switch from Windows 8 to . See this link or other description how to do it: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2417361,00.asp If you're running Windows 8 back way back to the UEFI SECURE BOOT.

Windows 7: or earlier versions.

You have a computer that is functioning, and not too old, i.e. From 2000 or later. Pentium 4 or better, like dual core processor. If you are going to play more advanced games, the computer should have a better graphics card / GPU. You have a functioning broadband connected to the computer via network cable. You have a working e-mail account with an email address, password, and possibly data for outgoing and incoming mail servers. You have a web cam built in or connected via USB e.g. Logitec USB Web cam HD Web cam C270. You can use email, Facebook, Skype in both tablet, mobile phone and this linux computer. My recommendation is to install these programs and log ins even on this computer. You have a new hard drive or solid state drive with the same connector found on the motherboard of the computer, it's either SATA or IDE.

If you have a desktop computer and can see these SATA connectors on the motherboard then you should use a SATA disk.

If the contacts on your existing hard drive looks like the upper, acquiring an IDE disk. If the contacts on your existing hard drive looks like the bottom, use a SATA disk.

3 Switch from windows to openSUSE, by Bertil Palmqvist.

If you are installing on a laptop, the contacts on your hard drive are as shown below.

PROGRAMS I want to use How should I configure the computer for it to be able to replace my current Windows computer? See Appendix 2: Programs I want to use.

4 Switch from windows to openSUSE, by Bertil Palmqvist.

Preparations Save your personal settings from your windows PC. Saving data, that is Your documents, pictures, music, movies, your own email address with password, user names and passwords for other programs and applications from your Windows computer to an USB memory. Take the installation disks with the windows applications you want to use on this linux computer. You can check on https://appdb.winehq.org/ if the program is working well or not at all under the wine. When that website appears click on "Browse apps" on the right. Enter the program name, e.g. " III" in the box for Active Filters Name. Then click the "Update" filter. Quake III: Arena or Team Arena is displayed. This displays the info page with Rating Platinum. This means that everything should work in the program.

32-bit or 64-bit processor. Check if your processor is of type 32-bit or 64-bit. In most cases, the Intel or AMD processor is in 64-bit architecture. To do this in Windows to check the processor architecture you have: Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information Locate System Type. If the value column contains: "" is a 32-bit processor "x64", it is a 64-bit processor In my case, it looks like this:

5 Switch from windows to openSUSE, by Bertil Palmqvist.

Installation medium

I've System Type x64-based PC, then I have a 64-bit processor and will download an image file of type 64-bit that works for both AMD and Intel 64-bit processors. If the test above provides a 32-bit processor, you should download an image file of type 32-bit. Links to the download pages for different distributions are here http://distrowatch.com and for openSUSE it is http://software.opensuse.org/ I selected Direct Link 64 Bit PC and pressed Download DVD. I burn the file openSUSE-13.2-DVD-x86_64.iso on DVD. If you do not have a DVD burner or do not know how to do, ask a friend to do this. Alternatively, you can make a bootable USB stick with Linux Mint. See Appendix 3: How to make a bootable USB stick. Install openSUSE The installer was not able to install dual boot next to Windows 7, so I had to remove all partitions, and just install openSUSE.

If you have a new hard drive you want to install openSUSE on, which I recommend, take out the old windows hard drive, and install the new hard drive. The advantage of this method is that you can very easily get back your old windows computer, re-install the windows hard drive and restart your computer! It is also possible to install and overwrite linux on your windows hard disk, provided that the hard drive is flawless. Ensure that the boot order in BIOS is the CD-ROM/USB first. Restart the computer and insert the openSUSE DVD/USB memory. When the computer boots up from the DVD/USB it will display this screen. Click Next.

I start Firefox browser, and it works.

Select your language and keyboard The choice of language and keyboard is already done during the installation of openSUSE, so you do not configure this later.

Screen lock

I find it very annoying to be logged out and have the screen locked after only 10 minutes, so I did the following: Menu -> System Settings -> Power Saving Management Untick Power Saving handling the monitor. It was the sign off about 10 minutes. Menu -> System Settings -> Display -> Screen lock. It is set to start automatically after 4 minutes. Untick this.

MAIN INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE!

If you want, you can install and configure different programs that I describe below.

14 Switch from windows to openSUSE, by Bertil Palmqvist.

I recommend that you install/configure at least the following:

Thunderbird email client Chromium browser. Filezilla FTP program. GIMP Image processing

Install programs Programs available are installed in slightly different ways, see example below how I install some programs. Most programs are installed with Application Manager Apper Software Management. It is started by clicking on the green icon at the bottom left (Kickoff Application). Select Preferences -> System -> Apper Software Management.

Office package: LibreOffice is pre-installed, can export to pdf and most MS Office formats. Menus and spelling in Swedish. GOOD!

Browsers: Mozilla Firefox is pre-installed, Chromium (Open Source Edition of Google Chrome) and Seamonkey are available for installation. I installed them. Opera is not available for installation. I'll try installing it in another way later.

I'll try later to install the plugin Chromecast with several to handle streaming TV.

Bank-ID Available for Linux from Bank vendor. I'll install it later and see if it works. I saw on a bank's website to support the BANK ID on Linux would cease.

PDF reader: is preinstalled. Works ok on PDF files. Pdf files opened by default with Okular. I'll try to install Evince later.

Printer drivers: HP Officejet 7000 E809a and HP LaserJet 5L could not be installed in a simple manner via the Printer.

I'll try to install printers later.

15 Switch from windows to openSUSE, by Bertil Palmqvist.

Scanners: I have two scanners Canon CanoScan D1250 U2F, it is listed in SANE as "unsupported", so I try not to install it. The other is a Packard Bell Diamond 1200 Plus, and it is listed as "supported", it is the same as a MUSTEK BearPaw scanner. Simple image scanning and the sane interface was already installed. I connect Packard Bell scanner on a USB socket and try to scan but it does not work. Then I found an instruction that comes to my scanner on: https://sermoa.wordpress.com/2010/07/10/packard-bell-mustek-bearpaw-scanner-on-ubuntumint/ Plugged in the scanner in USB. Started a terminal. Tried to scan an image by writing the scan image command. it will not work, I needed to see the error message. [bpalmqvist@localhost~]$ scanimage [gt68xx] Couldn't open firmware file (`/usr/share/sane/gt68xx/PS1Dfw.usb'): No such file or directory scanimage: open of device gt68xx:libusb:004:002 failed: Invalid argument

I downloaded the file PS1Dfw.usb, but if a different file name appears in the error message, so download it from: http://meier-geinitz.de/sane/gt68xx-backend/

[bpalmqvist@localhost~]$ cd Hämtningar [bpalmqvist@localhost Hämtningar]$ su Lösenord: [root@localhost Hämtningar]# mv PS1Dfw.usb /usr/share/sane/gt68xx [root@localhost sane]# exit [bpalmqvist@localhost Hämtningar]$ [bpalmqvist@localhost ~]$ scanimage -L device `gt68xx:libusb:001:012' is a Mustek Bearpaw 1200 CU Plus flatbed scanner

Now start Easy Scanning Load a picture into the scanner, press the Read button and when the image was scanned press Save . It worked!

My advice is to check the http://www.sane-project.org/ if your scanner is supported by SANE.

FTP program: The program tnftp is pre-installed. Filezilla was not pre-installed, but is available for installation so I installed it using the Application Apper Software Management.

Image processing: GIMP was pre-installed.

GIMP 2.8 can not load Nikon modern RAW format. For Linux there are between program called (also available for Windows) that is independent but it works poorly compared to, for example, Lightroom on Windows 7. So I can not be without Windows for this so far.

16 Switch from windows to openSUSE, by Bertil Palmqvist.

As a complement to image processing, there are countless plugins that work satisfactorily only program in one of the environments. Commercial ones usually only be available for Windows and / or Mac. The following programs are available for installation: I'll try them later. , ufraw, Geeqie,

Text editor: A simple text editor that is started by default when you are editing a text file is . Vim is also installed. More are available for installation: I installed leafpad too.

Accounting programs: I found at the openSUSE forums some suggestions: osFinancials under Wine, and gnucash. The following accounting programs are available for installation: gnucash. I'll take a closer look at the accounting later. Visma Administration 1000, a Swedish accounting software, I will try to install at a later time under wine, and try to see if it works correctly.

Email client: KMail is pre-installed. I'll come back to how to add email accounts in KMail.

Mozilla Thunderbird is available for installation. I installi it too. Add to your email accounts like this: Kickoff Application Launcher -> Applications tab -> -> Email -> Mail/news client Thunderbird. Then Thunderbird starts and displays this window, click Skip ...(Hoppa över...).

17 Switch from windows to openSUSE, by Bertil Palmqvist.

Then the window for entering your email account appears: Enter your name as you want it to be shown to others. Enter the email address and password, and press Continue. (Fortsätt).

If all has gone well, the servers has been automatically set, verify that the information is correct! If so, press Done, otherwise press the manual setting and change what's wrong.

Videophone(VOIP): Skype is not available for installation. I went to the Skype website Skype for Linux, and downloaded Skype for openSUSE 12.1 32-bit, and hope that it works on this openSUSE 13.2 64- bit, it might need 32-bit lib files too.

I first chose to open with Apper

27 Switch from windows to openSUSE, by Bertil Palmqvist.

If I double-click on a contact in the main window, a control window opens up, click on Call will call the contact, in my case, Hilding Palmqvist (My Gallery).

Now the video window shows up with the gallery, everything works as it should !!

28 Switch from windows to openSUSE, by Bertil Palmqvist.

To end the call, press the red handset in the image window, or End Call in the Control window.

Multimedia player: multimedia player is pre-installed. It could not play an mp4 file downloaded from youtube, so I installed VLC, but it did not work either. There seems to be missing video codecs. I tried several methods to install codecs via yast2 from an external repository, but I did not understand what to do in YaST2, nothing worked. In the end, I found this page which seems to solve the problem: http://opensuse-community.org/ I clicked the button ”KDE codecs via 1-click”. Codecs are downloaded and installed with YaST2 authenticate and when the installation is complete, click Finish in YaST2. Now the playback of videos works in many formats!

I launched VLC media player, and it works for both audio and video, as well kaffeine!

29 Switch from windows to openSUSE, by Bertil Palmqvist.

Audio Player, Music Player: The music player Amaroc is pre-installed, works perfect, pick itself info about the artists.

Antivirus program: Antivirus programs are not needed in linux in my opinion, if you are careful with what you install that does not come from the repository. There is little risk that malicious software enters. However, there is clamav which is a command program which can perform advanced scanning. Added to this is a GUI Clam TK. I will test clamv later on.

DVD Burner: Disc Burner is preinstalled. Brasero, Xfburn and a few more are available for installation. I content myself with K3b. I have been using K3b for several years (Fedora 17), and it has worked like clockwork every time, however, it pops up a little strange error messages that the disc can not be found or installed, or is already installed, but you do not care about them. I think it has to do with that there will be conflict between the File Manager and K3b!

Terminal program: Terminal (KDE), Terminal Super User Mode (KDE) and are pre-installed, but I do not like the color, so I changed to black text on white background. The following terminal emulators available to install: -terminal, rxvt-unicode, putty, etc.

Firewall: I'll come back at a later date, to how to set up a firewall in Linux.

Bittorrent program: Bittorrent client Ktorrent is pre-installed. There is more to install. e.g. qbittorrent, and transmission.

Python interpreter: Python is pre-installed.

Games: is not available for installation, but after some searching I found this page: http://software.opensuse.org/download.html?project=home%3Adraht%3Agames&package=nexuiz I'll try later on if it works . It does not appear that there are "first person shooter" games available for installation except freedoom and bzflag. I'd like to see Alien Arena, Darkplaces Quake, RedEclipse, Open Arena, Quake, quake2, for they are for Fedora. I found the following pages which I will try later on:

30 Switch from windows to openSUSE, by Bertil Palmqvist. http://software.opensuse.org/package/openarena http://red.planetarena.org/aquire.html https://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/download.html http://redeclipse.net/ https://tr.opensuse.org/Games There are a number of other games to install, try the ones you want .. When the installation is complete, the packets are shown with green check marks, and the Program menu includes all parts with Wine as icons.

Now you must restart your computer to wine should work!

Classic old windows game: Pinball, cards, Freecell, solitaire, spider can be copied from your Windows computer and started from a terminal with e.g. # wine pinball.exe, or in Files right click on pinball.exe, choose Open With -> "Wine Windows Application Launcher".

Windows software on CD / DVD can be installed in wine as follows: As an example, Quake III Arena: Insert the Quake III disc, select open with Files, a window opens showing the files on the CD. Right-click on setup.exe, choose Open With -> "Wine Windows Application Launcher", Quake III Arena window opens, click Install. Then proceed as on a Windows system. Conclusions openSUSE is affordable to install, if you select default options, but if you change anything it sometimes requires expert knowledge or else somthing can go wrong. I am positive that SUSE has abandoned the GNOME desktop pre-installed, and instead chose KDE. However, I would have choosen Xfce I have a little trouble finding where to start programs in the programming menu, I do not understand intuitively where various things are. I do not like KDE's window designs with transparent windows, etc. Program Manager is limited, and in order to install some programs you need to do it with the YaST2. WARNING YaST2 requires expert knowledge, and it is difficult to understand how to do, even if you read a description. When to shut down the computer or log off, so you have to wait 25 seconds before switching off, why? I discovered later that it is just to klick the text. When you start your computer after you shut it off, even if you are logged out first, you get no login window, but it is in the desktop at once, this is a security issue! I think that the pre-selected automatic login during installation is to blame. When to install any application to an authentication window will appear, but it hides behind every window, BAD openSUSE team! Test the distribution openSUSE, but I do not think it is suitable for beginners. If you follow this document, it will be affordable to install and configure! Once you have installed openSUSE and the selected programs you want to use on the computer, I think, that appearance is neat, and that it is approved! I think it takes quite a while to get used to the menus and program management. OpenSUSE is quite different from other distributions. I would probably try something different desktop that intuitively feels easier to find in the menus, etc.

If after some time, you want to try another Linux distribution, you just have to do it the same way as you did during the preparation and save away your data on a USB stick that is documents, pictures, movies, etc. Then install the second distribution and overwrite it on the hard drive, or which I recommend to install a different distribution on a new hard drive.

My comments Do not be to quick and install openSUSE without having read through this document, it is otherwise easily that something goes wrong, or maybe you would choose any other distribution?

My rating

I will return with my rating, when I installed and tried the other distributions. My ratings will be? of possible 5.

To do The points I have said that I will return to later

The example below shows how I make a bootable USB memory with Linux Mint. If you are making another distribution, so only replace the linuxmint-17.1-cinnamon-64bit.iso filename with the iso filename you want to install in the commands described below. Commands appear in bold.

Making a bootable USB memory on Linux is super simple: You must be logged in as root (superuser) user: sudo su or just su depending on how the system is set up. On my system, it is su. (Output is in Swedish i.e. Lösenord: = Password:.

$ su Lösenord: # Insert the USB memory, it is automatically mounted. Check what is the device name of the USB stick with the command df -k

# df -k Filsystem 1K-block Använt Tillgängligt Anv% Monterat på devtmpfs 1995704 0 1995704 0% /dev tmpfs 2007240 288 2006952 1% /dev/shm tmpfs 2007240 1276 2005964 1% /run

/dev/mapper/vg-lv_root 36541132 18800532 15877740 55% / tmpfs 2007240 0 2007240 0% /sys/fs/cgroup tmpfs 2007240 0 2007240 0% /media /dev/sdb1 1922728840 1621075108 203978056 89% /home2 /dev/sda1 487652 94326 367726 21% /boot /dev/mapper/vg-lv_home 18189068 12655992 4602468 74% /home /dev/sdg1 31250016 22135760 9114256 71% /run/media/torsten/3884-72CA

The /dev/sda and /dev/sdb are my two SATA disks, ie /dev/sdg is my 32GBUSB memory! You can see what is what by the size, 31250016 kB = 32GB Use the cd command to go to the directory where you have downloaded the ISO file to, in my case (Fedora) it is in the /home/bertil/Hämtningar/ This may be eg /home/your name/Downloads/ if you use a different distribution. # cd Hämtningar/ Use the ls command to verify that the iso file is there. # ls *.iso linuxmint-17.1-cinnamon-64bit.iso Good the iso file is in the directory I'm in. Then unmount the USB memory with the umount command and write the entire ISO file to a USB memory using the dd command. # umount /dev/sdg1 # dd if= linuxmint-17.1-cinnamon-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdg

Completed!

On the computer that you install linux on, you have to be able to put the USB as first boot device in the BIOS to boot from the USB stick. There is also a possibility to choose boot device by pressing the F12 key during boot.
