And you’ll probably want to schedule your visits at different times of the year so you can take advantage of the area’s seasonal offerings, including hot springs, Thousand wildlife viewing and recreational opportunities. You can stay overnight at a number of accommodations, including campsites, Springs Bed and Breakfast camp domes, motels, hotels, RV parks, and bed and breakfasts – listings are in the Accommodations section of this magazine. And, be sure to sample the local cuisine and take in the area’s unique events. BLISS About 300 people live in Bliss, which was founded in 1881 as a rail town on the Oregon Short Line, and was named for David B. Bliss. 1. The Thousand Springs Scenic Byway The byway is 67.8 miles long, begins at Interstate 84 near Bliss and follows U.S. Highway 30 southeast through Hagerman, Buhl and Filer, and north on Route 93 through Twin Falls to I-84. Along the route, you will be able to take in the unique geography of the Snake River Canyon area, which was formed by “huge, prehistoric Wine, Wonder and Wildlife cataclysmic forces.” You can follow the “new” or the “old” U.S. Highway 30 from Bliss to Hagerman. on the Snake River If you want to take the old route that passes through rural farmland and hatcheries, look for “River Road” in Bliss. You’ll see it before you get to the OxBow Café, where there is also a picnic area and informational signs and pamphlets depicting the local history and unique geology – look for the area’s famous “rock melons,” some the size of a car. The Malad Gorge State Park featuring the Devil’s Washbowl www.featheredwinds.com This is a 451-acre park off U.S. Highway 30 (you can also get there by taking Exit 147 18852 Highway 30 off I-84). Take the turn-off at 20500 South Road, it’s a fairly short but very winding Hagerman, ID 83332 road, barely marked by a sign, just before you reach Hagerman.
