Chancey teaches biblical studies in the Department of Religious Studies in Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He attended the University of Georgia, where he earned a B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Religion (1990) and an M.A. in Religion (1992), and Duke University, where he received a Ph.D. in Religion with a focus in New Testament studies and early Judaism (1999). His research interests include the Gospels, the Historical Jesus, archaeology and the Bible, and the political and social history of Palestine during the Roman period. He is a member of the Society for Biblical Literature, the Catholic Biblical Association, the American Academy of Religion, and the American Schools for Oriental Research. THE BIBLE AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS 2 INTRODUCTION n May 2005, Texas Freedom Network provided advisor.” Some passages and assignments reflect me with a copy of the curriculum of the sensitivity to the differences between Judaism and INational Council on Bible Curriculum in Christianity. This background and my experiences inform my belief that Bible courses The Bible is explicitly characterized as inspired by taught in a nonsectarian manner by academically God. qualified teachers can be an enriching part of a public education. Discussions of science are based on the claims of biblical creationists. The courts have clearly ruled that public school courses on the Bible, when taught Jesus is presented as fulfilling “Old Testament” from a nonsectarian perspective, are legal and prophecy. appropriate.1 The NCBCPS curriculum does reflect occasional efforts to be nonsectarian. THE BIBLE AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS 3 The issue at stake here is not whether individuals unreasonable to expect teachers without advanced or groups should hold such beliefs, but whether training in biblical studies to recognize all of this such positions should be presented as fact in a curriculum’s errors — but it is not unreasonable to public school setting. The obvious answer — both expect a curriculum to be free of them. constitutionally and ethically — is “No.” The curriculum costs $150 if purchased from Many of the sources the curriculum uses are the Council’s Web site, $169.99 from Amazon.com. nonacademic in nature. The curriculum includes It is considerably more expensive than many several bibliographies of scholarly books that textbooks on the market.4 serve as recommended readings but often reflects little familiarity with the sources themselves.3 On multiple occasions, it directs teachers and students to resources and Web sites that explicitly advocate sectarian claims — though the readers of the curriculum might not realize this until they consult those resources. The curriculum also does not sufficiently make clear its dependence on its sources. In fact, it often cites no sources at all. When the curriculum does cite secondary sources, it does not explicitly state when it, in effect, reproduces them on a word- for-word level. Such verbal similarities extend for lines, paragraphs, and even pages at a time. In one unit, 20 pages are virtually identical in wording to uncited articles posted online. All in all, the wording of nearly 100 pages of the curriculum — approximately a third of the book — is identical or nearly identical to the wordings of other publications, many of them not cited. In addition, the curriculum contains numerous factual errors and vastly oversimplified (some might say misleading) presentations of complex issues. Many of these problems are reproduced from the curriculum’s sources, though others seem to have been introduced by its authors. A casual perusal might not uncover these problems, but a detailed study makes them clear. It would be THE BIBLE AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS 4 OVERVIEW OF THE CURRICULUM ccording to one report, the curriculum is indoctrination of students. • The Anti-Defamation League
The Anti-Defamation League Intimidation (including false accusations) by the ADL is their specialty, but through the strength of God, I have no fear of them. There is nothing wrong with exposing real anti-Semitism directed toward Jewish and Arabic people. Sometimes, the ADL do indeed expose real anti-Semites (like the neo-Nazis, 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Freemason Henry Ford, Charles Coughlin, etc.). On the other hand, real researches make manifest of the ADL not only being an arm of the elite (many of these elitists advocate one world government), but some have accused the ADL of once having mafia and pornography ties . The ADL is a network of people that stalks some people under the guise of “anti-Semitism” to elevate their own agenda . Many members of the ADL sincerely fight against bigotry, but their leadership have been corrupted with compromise. Their agenda is extreme political correctness and the promotion of a far left agenda. Out of the many exposes on them, one was created by William Cooper. William Cooper (who died in a murder at October 2001) created his The Hour of the Time tape series on the ADL, which is the most truthful and fairest around to lay the reality on the Anti-Defamation League. The ADL’s roots existed from the Jewish Masonic Lodge of B’nai B’rith, so that will be outlined first. In the words of William Cooper: “I am not talking about Jews. I am talking about a branch of the Illuminati, the control structure that is bringing one world government into fruition, destroying the sovereignty of nations, and many many other things.” According to Edith Starr-Miller’s 1933 Occult Theocracy, German Jews headed by Henry Jones invented the B’nai B’rith in October 13, 1843.

JOURNAL A Quarterly for Church Leadership VOLUME 11 . NUMBER 2 . SPRING 2002 BOOK REVIEWS THE WAY OF WISDOM: ESSAYS IN HONOR OF BRUCE K. WALTKE. J. I. Packer and Sven K. Soderlund, editors Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2000 332 pages, cloth, $29.99. 111 ttainment of a seventieth birthday is a happy event, and ~ when it is a scholar's birthday, the blessings often spill over to all who will avail themselves of them in published Festschriften. The Way of Wisdom celebrates -Bruce Waltke's pro ductive career as professor, author, and pastor, whose academ ic trail has led him to his present role as Professor Emeritus while chairing the Old Testament department at Reformed Theological seminary, Orlando, Florida. A delightful quality of a Festschrift is the variety of essay topics that appeal to many interests. This tribute to Waltke offers several essays that will find use in any pastor's library. It consists of nineteen essays by prominent evangelicals, each scholars in their own right. Each essay, many fewer than twen ty pages, includes endnotes attached at the close of the essay. J. I. Packer provides a fitting introductory essay, "Theology and Wisdom," that examines the significance of uniting schol arly discipline and wisdom. John Sailhamer, always stimulat ing, does not disappoint with his essay ("A Wisdom Composi tion of the Pentateuch?"). He shows how the Pentateuch's present shape reveals that poetic seams link large narrative por tions within the book, spanning the whole Pentateuch. In honor ofWaltke, it is fitting that the editors retained Hebrew and Greek script instead of transliteration in essays where authors appealed to the languages.
