1.13 NEW ZEALAND’S GENETIC DIVERSITY NEW ZEALAND’S GENETIC DIVERSITY Dennis P. Gordon National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, Private Bag 14901, Kilbirnie, Wellington 6022, New Zealand ABSTRACT: The known genetic diversity represented by the New Zealand biota is reviewed and summarised, largely based on a recently published New Zealand inventory of biodiversity. All kingdoms and eukaryote phyla are covered, updated to refl ect the latest phylogenetic view of Eukaryota. The total known biota comprises a nominal 57 406 species (c. 48 640 described). Subtraction of the 4889 naturalised-alien species gives a biota of 52 517 native species. A minimum (the status of a number of the unnamed species is uncertain) of 27 380 (52%) of these species are endemic (cf. 26% for Fungi, 38% for all marine species, 46% for marine Animalia, 68% for all Animalia, 78% for vascular plants and 91% for terrestrial Animalia). In passing, examples are given both of the roles of the major taxa in providing ecosystem services and of the use of genetic resources in the New Zealand economy. In recent great service quality and increase their positive memorable years, researchers have highlighted memorable tourism tourism experiences (MTEs) are essential as satisfaction alone is proven to be insufficient.Zoo Negara is the oldest zoo in experiences (MTEs) as being absolutely essential for Malaysia, but it is one of the latest additions to the panda zoo destinations to provide to their visitors in order to achieve around the world as it has been chosen to house a pair of giant success in this highly competitive tourism world (Kim, pandas named Fu Wa (Xing Xing) and Feng Yi (Liang Liang) 2014; Kim, Hallab & Kim, 2012). Service quality has been for 10 years. Therefore, this exploratory research examines proven to be one of the antecedents of MTEs in several whether service quality is an antecedent of MTEs for GPCC in studies (Chandralal & Valenzuela, 2015; Kim, 2014). -

South Africa and Namibia, 20 July - 12 August 2017. VLADIMIR DINETS This trip was an introduction to Africa for my wife and daughter; the latter was two and a half years old at the time and enjoyed it a lot. We had three weeks to kill while a container with our stuff was traveling from New Jersey to our new home in Okinawa. We started from Cape Town, drove east to Hermanus and then north to Oranjemund, flew to Windhoek, briefly explored a few locations up to Etosha, returned to Windhoek and spent one day and two nights in Johannesburg. In 2017, Cape Town area, Namaqualand and Namibia were experiencing a major drought. Full moon was on August 7; that made finding small mammals difficult during the Namibian part of the trip. I had six Sherman traps and caught only twelve rodents of two species (two pygmy mice in the far south and Namaqua rock rats almost everywhere else). Bats seemed absent with few exceptions. I saw almost a hundred species, all but four of which I had seen before (see my 2008 trip report), and removed a few species from my “better view much desired” list. South Africa Simon’s Town is a convenient base for exploring the area; M4 south from it is a good place to look for chacma baboons, while humpback whales are often feeding offshore (we saw one, and heard a few while scuba diving). Watch for South African fur seals, too. Four-striped grass mice (locally called “field mice”) were abundant in wooded parts of penguin colonies. -

Beautiful Sunbird RBT Ghana Trip Report February 2007 2 Tour Summary This classic tour combining the best rainforest sites, national parks and seldom explored northern regions gave us an incredible overview of the excellent birding that Ghana has to offer. This trip was highly successful, we located nearly 400 species of birds including many of the Upper Guinea endemics and West Africa specialties, and together with a great group of people, we enjoyed a brilliant African birding adventure. After spending a night in Accra our first morning birding was taken at the nearby Shai Hills, a conservancy that is used mainly for scientific studies into all aspects of wildlife. These woodland and grassland habitats were productive and we easily got to grips with a number of widespread species as well as a few specials that included the noisy Stone Partridge, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Senegal Parrot, Guinea Turaco, Swallow-tailed Bee-eater, Vieillot’s and Double- toothed Barbet, Gray Woodpecker, Yellow-throated Greenbul, Melodious Warbler, Snowy-crowned Robin-Chat, Blackcap Babbler, Yellow-billed Shrike, Common Gonolek, White Helmetshrike and Piapiac. Towards midday we made our way to the Volta River where our main target, the White-throated Blue Swallow showed well. -
Low Doses of A2-Adrenoceptor Antagonists Augment Spinal Morphine Analgesia and Inhibit Development of Acute and Chronic Tolerance

Considering the evidence demonstrating functional and physical interactions between the opioid and a2-adrenoceptors, this study investigated whether ultra-low doses of a2-adrenoceptor antagonists also influence spinal morphine analgesia and tolerance. Experimental approach: Effects of low doses of the competitive a2-adrenoceptor antagonists—atipamezole (0.08, 0.8 ng), yohimbine (0.02, 2 ng), mirtazapine (0.02 ng) and idazoxan (0.08 ng) were investigated on intrathecal morphine analgesia, as well as acute and chronic morphine antinociceptive tolerance using the rat tail flick and paw pressure tests. Key results: At doses markedly lower than those producing a2-adrenoceptor blockade, atipamezole, yohimbine, mirtazapine and idazoxan, prolonged the antinociceptive effects of morphine. When co-administered with repeated acute spinal injections of morphine, all four agents blocked the induction of acute tolerance. Co-injection of atipamezole with morphine for 5 days inhibited the development of tolerance in a chronic treatment paradigm. Spinal administration of atipamezole also reversed established antinociceptive tolerance to morphine as indicated by the restoration of morphine antinociceptive potency. The effects of atipamezole on spinal morphine tolerance were not influenced by treatment with 6-hydroxydopamine. -
