  • Agency in the Afrofuturist Ontologies of Erykah Badu and Janelle Monáe
Open Cultural Studies 2018; 2: 330–340 Research Article Nathalie Aghoro* Agency in the Afrofuturist Ontologies of Erykah Badu and Janelle Monáe https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2018-0030 Received May 21, 2018; accepted September 26, 2018 Abstract: This article discusses the visual, textual, and musical aesthetics of selected concept albums (Vinyl/CD) by Afrofuturist musicians Erykah Badu and Janelle Monaé. It explores how the artists design alternate projections of world/subject relations through the development of artistic personas with speculative background narratives and the fictional emplacement of their music within alternate cultural imaginaries. It seeks to establish that both Erykah Badu and Janelle Monáe use the concept album as a platform to constitute their Afrofuturist artistic personas as fluid black female agents who are continuously in the process of becoming, evolving, and changing. They reinscribe instances of othering and exclusion by associating these with science fiction tropes of extraterrestrial, alien lives to express topical sociocultural criticism and promote social change in the context of contemporary U.S. American politics and black diasporic experience. Keywords: conceptual art, Afrofuturism, gender performance, black music, artistic persona We come in peace, but we mean business. (Janelle Monáe) In her Time’s up speech at the Grammys in January 2018, singer, songwriter, and actress Janelle Monáe sends out an assertive message from women to the music industry and the world in general. She repurposes the ambivalent first encounter trope “we come in peace” by turning it into a manifest for a present-day feminist movement. Merging futuristic, utopian ideas with contemporary political concerns pervades Monáe’s public appearances as much as it runs like a thread through her music.

  • Blind Lemon Jefferson from Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia
Blind Lemon Jefferson From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Background information Birth name Lemon Henry Jefferson Also known as Deacon L. J. Bates Born September 24, 1893[1] Coutchman, Texas, U.S. Origin Texas Died December 19, 1929 (aged 36) Chicago, Illinois, U.S. Genres Blues, gospel blues Occupation(s) Singer-songwriter, musician Instruments Guitar Years active 1900s–1929 Labels Paramount Records, Okeh Records Notable instruments Acoustic Guitar "Blind" Lemon Jefferson (born Lemon Henry Jefferson; September 24, 1893 – December 19, 1929) was an American blues and gospel blues singer and guitarist from Texas. He was one of the most popular blues singers of the 1920s, and has been called "Father of the Texas Blues". Jefferson's performances were distinctive as a result of his high-pitched voice and the originality on his guitar playing. Although his recordings sold well, he was not so influential on some younger blues singers of his generation, who could not imitate him as easily as they could other commercially successful artists. Later blues and rock and roll musicians, however, did attempt to imitate both his songs and his musical style. Biography Early life Jefferson was born blind, near Coutchman in Freestone County, near present-day Wortham, Texas. He was one of eight children born to sharecroppers Alex and Clarissa Jefferson. Disputes regarding his exact birth date derive from contradictory census records and draft registration records. By 1900, the family was farming southeast of Streetman, Texas, and Lemon Jefferson's birth date is indicated as September 1893 in the 1900 census. The 1910 census, taken in May before his birthday, further confirms his year of birth as 1893, and indicated the family was farming northwest of Wortham, near Lemon Jefferson's birthplace.

RED HOUSE RECORDS Publicity Contact: Ellen Stanley • [email protected] • (651) 644-4161 DANNY SCHMIDT man of many moons RHR-CD-232 • Release Date: February 8, 2011 _________ “Danny Schmidt is a force of nature: a blue moon, a hundred-year flood, an avalanche of a singer-songwriter.” - Sing Out! “idiosyncratic, meticulously constructed songs...infused with intellect and quirkiness.” - New Yorker _________ Red House Records is pleased to announce the February 8, 2011 release of Man of Many Moons, the new album from Austin folksinger Danny Schmidt. Recognized for his sharp wit and poetic sensibility, he has been called “a rare breed” by the Austin Chronicle--a musician’s musician who is respected for his highly original writing and loved for his captivating performances. Since the release of his Red House debut Instead the Forest Rose to Sing, he has emerged from the underground music scene to become one of America’s most significant songwriters. The album garnered rave reviews and charted for months on folk and Americana radio, making No Depression’s “Best of 2009” list and becoming the #2 most played folk album that year. Now, with the release of his new album, Danny confirms that he is “one of the great singer- songwriters of his generation” (Heaven Magazine). On Man of Many Moons, Danny returns to a purely acoustic sound, bringing us an album that is truly stripped down to the songs themselves. “The vision for the production was to try and allow the songs the breath and space to remain simple and intimate,” he says. “It’s, for the most part, me and my guitar and the songs.
