page 6 RiverPark Place • 610 North 4th Street, Suite 200 • Burlington, Iowa 52601 • (319) 752-6365 Downtown Welcomed Preserve Iowa Summit Downtown Burlington was at its best when hundreds of people attended the three-day Preserve Iowa Summit in August. Volunteers and Greater Burlington Partnership staff spent months planning the statewide conference, which included workshops, forums, and tours focused on historic preservation and downtown revitalization. Many hours were also spent decorating downtown windows and sprucing up the streetscape in advance of the Summit, which drew more than 325 attendees from Iowa and beyond to several downtown venues.

Along with educational sessions, conference goers were able to tour a number of historic districts and rehabilitation projects, including the Manufacturing & Wholesale Historic District, the Des Moines County Heritage Center, and the First United Methodist Church. In the evenings they were able to enjoy several social events, including a special dessert reception on the rooftop of a downtown condo. The response to the conference was overwhelmingly positive; we heard many compliments about our volunteers, our shops and restaurants, and our beautiful community.

Downtown Partners and the Greater Burlington Convention & Visitors Bureau greatly appreciate the support of area businesses, organizations and individuals in making the Preserve Iowa Summit a resounding success. The positive feelings from the Summit are creating even more interest in downtown development; stay tuned!

FIVE YEARS OF ACHIEVEMENT The Greater Burlington Partnership is the identity for the overall organization that includes the Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development, Convention and Visitors Bureau and Downtown Partners, Inc. The shared vision is to ensure that Greater Burlington is a growing regional center of commerce, industry, education, health care, entertainment and culture that provides a great place to live and work.

The Partnership’s most recent initiative,Partnering for the Future, which began in the fall of 2008, provided significant benefits to Burlington, West Burlington and the surrounding area. Despite the worst economy since the Great Depression, investors committed $1.5 million over five years through Partnering for the Future for business recruitment and retention, workforce development and worker recruitment, downtown revitalization and tourism.

The Partnership has an impressive track record of success over the last five years as a result ofPartnering for the Future. While the current campaign runs through the end of 2013, here are the results to date:

• 24 New Projects • 800 New Primary Jobs Created • 543 Primary Jobs Retained • $107 Million + in Capital Investment Realized • More than $414 Million in Tourism Expenditures • 23 New Residential Units in Downtown Burlington and Dozens More in the Pipeline

With these outstanding accomplishments, the Greater Burlington area was recently ranked 30th in the nation by Site Selection magazine in its annual rankings of micropolitan statistical areas. Micropolitans are geographic centers with an urban population of between 10,000 and 50,000 residents. There are 576 micropolitans throughout the and more than a dozen in Iowa. Greater Burlington was ranked #1 in Iowa and the surrounding states.

The Greater Burlington area is primed to achieve even greater heights in this competitive global economy. The success of the past five years is only the beginning. MAINTAINING MOMENTUM Despite the Partnership’s recent success, there are many challenges facing the Greater Burlington area and Des Moines County. Like many communities throughout the country, Burlington area businesses are having a difficult time identifying, hiring and retaining skilled workers. Now is the time to fund the next five-year plan with a focus on strengthening workforce development and worker attraction, business expansion and attraction, capital investment and community enhancement.

In January 2013, Convergent Nonprofit Solutions LLC conducted a feasibility study for a new, five-year, draft economic growth program for the Greater Burlington Partnership. The plan was tested and refined through interviews with area business and community leaders. After receiving positive feedback from the community, Matt Shinn, the Partnership launched Partnering for the Future II. Campaign Co-Chair Two Rivers Bank & Trust VISION FOR THE FUTURE

With input received from four boards of directors, nearly five dozen business leaders, and our outstanding team members, the plan represents a bold vision for the future.

Aggressive Goals. New jobs. The attraction of capital. Property redevelopment. Population growth. Leadership development. Community marketing. Available workforce. All of these elements and more are contained in the plan linked to aggressive goals and performance measures. Small thinking often yields insignificant results while big thinking leads to powerful outcomes. This plan is aggressive, yet achievable.

Competitive Positioning. Economic development is not for the faint of heart. The competition in Iowa and across the nation is intense. Other communities will raise more money, but the team at the Partnership is second to none. They are true professionals in their given fields and have been trained to leverage every dollar for maximum results.

Accountability. $1.75 million is a sign of strong support for the community. As stewards of these resources, accountability is paramount. The Burlington Area Development Foundation has an independent board of trustees, and its sole purpose is to monitor the utilization of Partnering for the Future II funds and ensure adequate progress toward the goals. The Partnership is a four-star accredited organization by the US Chamber and is audited annually in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.

Defining the Future. When you look around the community, you can see the results of bold leadership. Our community has endured its share of difficult times, yet there is every reason to be optimistic about the future. In 20 years, the next batch of leaders will evaluate the work we did today. Let’s give them something to talk about. Together, we can change the fate of our community.
