Oral Tradition, 29/1 (2014):5-46 Why Jews Quote Michael Marmur Everyone Quotes1 Interest in the phenomenon of quotation as a feature of culture has never been greater. Recent works by Regier (2010), Morson (2011) and Finnegan (2011) offer many important insights into a practice notable both for its ubiquity and yet for its specificity. In this essay I want to consider one of the oldest and most diverse of world cultures from the perspective of quotation. While debates abound as to whether the “cultures of the Jews”2 can be regarded integrally, this essay will suggest that the act of quotation both in literary and oral settings is a constant in Jewish cultural creativity throughout the ages. By attempting to delineate some of the key functions of quotation in these various Jewish contexts, some contribution to the understanding of what is arguably a “universal human propensity” (Finnegan 2011:11) may be made. “All minds quote. Old and new make the warp and woof of every moment. There is not a thread that is not a twist of these two strands. By necessity, by proclivity, and by delight, we all quote.”3 Emerson’s reference to warp and woof is no accident. DEAD SEA SCROLLS While the Dead Sea Scrolls are generally associated with Qumran, properly they also cover discoveries from approximately a dozen other sites in the desert wilderness surrounding the Dead Sea, such as those at Naal ever, Murabbaat, and Masada. The approximately 930 MSS from Qumran were penned from the 3rd c. BC through the 1st c. AD. The Masada texts include Jewish scrolls from the time leading up to the Roman conquest (AD 73) and subsequent Roman documents. The finds at Naal ever and Murabbaat include documents from the time of the Bar Kokhba revolt (AD 132–135). Other Bar Kokhba era documents are known from Ketef Jericho, Wadi Sdeir, Naal Mishmar, and Naal eelim (see DJD 38). For a full accounting, see the lists by Tov under “Bibliography” below. A Midrashic Reading of the Akedah
The Fruits of Dissent and the Operationalization of Faith: A Midrashic Reading of the Akedah Elliot Lyons 1 Introduction The Bible is a text fraught with ‘gaps’ – narrative silences, inconsistencies, and places where questions arise – and as such yearns to be interpreted. Genesis 22, Abraham’s intended sacrifice of Isaac, the Akedah (‘binding’) as it is known in Judaism, is nothing but exemplary in this regard. The biblical text main- tains two ‘gaps’1 where Midrash – biblical interpretation in the Jewish tradi- tion which juxtaposes biblical passages – places Satan into the narrative in a manner that emphasizes the fortification of faith through interrogating its very premises.2 The more questions put to Abraham, in other words, the deeper his faith becomes. Accordingly, this chapter will begin by locating the two main ‘gaps’ in the text: Genesis 22:1, where Abraham was tested “after these things/ words”, and the narratological gap between verses three and four. In presenting the textual gaps, I will use traditional historical-critical exegesis in order to juxtapose the radical potential and imagination present in Midrash to a method of interpre- tation that either entirely fails to answer the gaps, or only glimpses the tip of the theological iceberg that is the Akedah. Next I will discuss three Midrashim, from Genesis Rabbah (GR), from Midrash Tanhumah Yelammedenu (TY), and from the Babylonian Talmud (BT), which reconsider the gaps from the first half of the chapter in light of Satan questioning the ethics of a sacrifice-forged faith, and God pressing the grim task of filicide. 1 There is another ‘gap’ between the end of chapter 22 and the beginning of chapter 23, where Abraham returns and finds Sarah dead. -

Story Overview: Having deceived his brother and father Jacob escaped to relatives in Haran. During the journey Jacob dreamed of a stairway between heaven and earth on which angels were ascending and descending to the Lord at the top. God reassured Jacob of his blessing and promise. Undeserving as he was this promise sustained Jacob over the next twenty years as he worked for his uncle Laban and built a family and wealth. Eventually, Jacob returned to his home and was surprised to find that his brother, Esau, welcomed him with open arms. Background Study: This lesson takes up where the story of Jacob, Esau and the Birthright left off. After deceiving his father and brother Jacob left his family home and makes his way North to his mother’s relatives in Haran. The official reason that he is looking for a wife but it is evident that he is fleeing the wrath of his brother. Many important events happen on his trip to Haran, his life there and years later upon his eventual return to face his brother. The following events begin and end in Bethel. The Seder Olam

Nelte THE SEDER OLAM PART 1 GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE SEDER OLAM In an attempt to support the use of the Jewish calendar, appeals have been made to the Jewish historic document known as "The Seder Olam". The Hebrew word "seder" means "order, arrangement". It is used only once in the Bible, in the plural, in Job 10:22 where it is translated as "order". The Hebrew word "olam" is used 439 times in the O.T. and translated in the KJV as "ever" 272 times, as "everlasting" 63 times, as "old" 22 times, as "evermore" 15 times, as "world" 4 times, etc.. In Gesenius' Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon to the Old Testament "olam" is defined as: "what is hidden, specially hidden in time, long, the beginning or end of which is either uncertain or else not defined, eternity, perpetuity", etc.. Gesenius continues to point out that "olam" is used to refer to ... "the world, from the Chaldee and RABBINIC usage, like the Greek word 'aion'". So the rabbinic expression "Seder Olam" basically means "THE ORDER OF THE WORLD". There are TWO midrashic chronological works known as "Seder Olam". They are known as "Seder Olam Rabbah" ("The Great Seder Olam") and as "Seder Olam Zuta" ("The Small Seder Olam"). The Seder Olam Rabbah is the earlier one (2nd century A.D.) and the one on which the later Seder Olam Zuta (6th to 8th century A.D.) is based. One more word we need to clarify is the word "Midrash", so we know what is meant by a "midrashic work". -

I do not cast these tales in an educational, religious, or aca- demic light but, rather, present them as texts that have the power to move people. That is, I present them as literature. The Talmud contains hundreds of stories about rabbinic sages and other historical fi gures who lived during the late Second Temple and rabbinic periods, which spanned the fi rst few centuries of the Common Era. The stories were recorded long after the events they recount, and thus they are literary rather than historical accounts. For generations these stories were neglected by literary audiences and were considered the province of rabbis and academics alone. But this is no longer the case. In the past decades readers of diverse backgrounds have devel- oped an openness and a willingness to engage this literature on their own terms. -
