Since the release of The Dark Knight film series and the 22 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, comic-book characters have become wildly popular in other forms of entertainment, particularly television. But broadcast TV’s representations of comic-book characters are no longer the bright, colorful, and optimistic figures of the past. Children are innately attracted to comic-book characters; but in today’s comic book-based programs, children are being exposed to graphic violence, profanity, dark and intense themes, and other inappropriate content. In this research report, the PTC examined comic book-themed prime-time programming on the maJor broadcast networks during November, February, and May “sweeps” periods from November 2012 through May 2019. Programs examined were Fox’s Gotham; CW’s Arrow, Black Lightning, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends oF Tomorrow, and Riverdale; and ABC’s Marvel’s Agents oF S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s Agent Carter, and Marvel’s Inhumans. Research data suggest that broadcast television programs based on these comic-book characters, created and intended for children, are increasingly inappropriate and/or unsafe for young viewers. In its research, the PTC found the following during the study period: • In comic book-themed programming with particular appeal to children, young viewers were exposed to over 6,000 incidents of violence, over 500 deaths, and almost 2,000 profanities. • The most violent program was CW’s Arrow. Young viewers witnessed 1,241 acts of violence, including 310 deaths, 280 instances of gun violence, and 26 scenes of people being tortured.

Actors of the story produced by David Goyer and Justin Marx wrote the screenplay for the film starring Green Arrow originally called Super Max. On June 5, 2008, the film was renamed Green Arrow: Escape from Super Max. Reportedly, the storyline is that the hero (framed for a crime he didn't commit) must avoid a maximum-security prison filled with B and C a list of villains and rogue superheroes. MTV published an interview with Marx on its website. In it, he says this: It's a very, very huge prison. SEEING THE INVISIBLE: BATMAN’S GOTHAM AND GREEN ARROW’S STAR CITY UNMASKED LISANN ANDERS UNIVERSITY OF ZÜRICH Cities in comics are often represented as confining and liberating at the same time. They promise opportunity and prospect embodying the American Dream which, nonetheless, comes at a cost. The downsides can be diverse: the loss of family and friends due to crimes, an overwhelming anonymity, or the loss the self. André Suhr sums this aspect of the city up by outlining that On the one hand it liberates the individual to concentrate on him- or herself […]; on the other hand this very liberation may produce loneliness and isolation. In an atmosphere of general indifference it gets harder and harder to be recognized as an individual. So, according to Simmel, individuality in the modern city becomes a staged production of superficial effects. (Suhr 2010, 240-241) This performative aspect of the urban setting is predominantly emphasized in superhero comics, in which the hero is dressing up in order to take on the persona of “hero” and/or “vigilante.” In this regard, two examples stand out, namely the eponymous protagonists of the comic series The Batman and The Green Arrow. For both, the city is transformed into a stage on which they can perform their heroism. However, in doing so, they are at the risk of losing their unmasked identity respectively as Bruce Wayne and Oliver Queen. In the following article, I would like to explore the creation and loss of identity within the city space through the analysis of the comic miniseries Batman: Broken City (2004) by writer Brian Azzarello and artist Eduardo Risso, and Mike Grell’s comic series Green Arrow (issues 1-12) from 1987–1989 (later republished 1 JULY 2020 POPMEC RESEARCH BLOG «» POPMEC.HYPOTHESES.ORG as collected editions in 2012-2013)1, as well as the TV show Arrow seasons 1-52.
