Still it’s a week late. We had hoped to start writing our auc- tion catalog on March 2nd but here it is March 5th and we’re still working away on our list. As usual we could probably put together a 10-20 page list of Miscellaneous items that we’ve condensed to 5 at the end of the list. We hope to put out 2 or 3 supplementary lists during the coming year which will probably only be available on our website. PHOTOS: As you can see, there are no photos on the printed copy of this list. It is no longer feasible either in an economic or time sense for us to have photos on printed copies of our list. However numerous items including most commemorative coins are pho- tographed on our website. Eventually all commemorative coins, bank notes and state medals will be pictured on our website. In addi- tion items marked with an asterisk (*) are photographed on our website (or at least will be soon). And we can provide email images for most items at no charge. We no longer can provide old time Polaroid photographs of items. ORDERING: Ordering information is on the back of the order blank. If you need any more information, please do not hesitate to ask. Our advertised phone hours are 9 AM to 6 PM during the week, although we are usually here earlier and later and sometimes on the weekends as well. You may call, Fax or E-Mail us 24 hours a day and we go to our Post Office virtually every day. Orders with payment receive preference. If calling and we do not answer, please leave a message. Please speak slowly and distinctly when leaving a message. If we can’t understand the message after 2 times we will erase it. We offer the option of Layaway Plans that make purchasing what you want a little easier. We usually ask for 1/3 down, 1/3 due in 30 days and the final 1/3 due within 60 days. However we try to work with your needs as well. AUCTIONS: We usually hold two auction sales each year, one in May or June and one in November consisting of ancient to mod- ern world wide material, with heavy emphasis on Israel/Palestine/Judaica. We will begin writing our spring catalog as this list goes in the mail. Actually the first thing we are going to do is clean the office. My office is usually messy but when writing a list it gets even worse. Sometimes I can’t even find the telephone when it’s ringing because it’s buried under papers, books, trays and “stuff”. We have numerous fine collections consigned for our spring sale and we’re looking forward to writing the catalog. ABOUT THIS LIST: This list is a general stock list and the prices listed replace any and all lists that you may have in your posses- sion. It will be active until our next Israel list in the late winter of 2010. We have not listed any Israeli gold coins on this list. However some were listed on Fixed Price List 39a which was mailed in mid-February and there are a number of gold State medals being offered on this list. Please send us your want list or ask for a quote. As this list goes to press, gold is about $935 per troy ounce and silver about $13.35. However these prices are very volatile and no doubt will be different by the time you get this list. Our inventory changes almost daily. Please let us know what you are looking for and we will do our best to find it for you. There are numerous items that we are listing for the first time as well as others that we haven’t seen in years. ANCIENTS: We have a large stock of ancient coins with our speciality being Jewish and Jewish related coins. Some are listed on our Fixed Price List 39A, which was mailed in mid February.     This coin, a genuine Biblical antiquity, is the first money issued by the Jewish people. The first Jewish coin was minted some 450 years after the Babylonian conquest, around 135 BCE , by John Hyrcanus I, King and High Priest of Judea. John was the first ruler of the legendary Hasmonean dynasty which restored Israel to Jewish power, giving rise to the so-called Second Temple Period. John took part in the uprising against the Seleucid Empire, as described in the Biblical books of Maccabees. Under his leadership, the Jews completely repelled the hated Seleucids from Judea, doubling the size of their kingdom and granting them the opportunity to mint these, the first Jewish coins. The Second Temple Period ended when the Romans destroyed the Temple and much of Jerusalem in 70 CE. The Emperor Hadrian rebuilt the ruined city 65 years later, but banished Jews from living there. It wasn’t until the establishment of Israel in 1948—some two thousand years later— that the Jewish people would issue another coin. This coin was minted between 135 and 40 BCE. The obverse shows a double cornucopia flanking a pomegranate—a fruit sacred to the early Jews. The cornucopia is a symbol of abundance, but derives from Roman mythology. It is likely that John Hyrcanus I incorporated this symbol as a nod to the mighty Roman Empire. The inscription on the reverse of the coin reads Yehohanan (John) the High Priest and the Council of the Jews. Note that there is no imagery of man or animal—as High Priest, John held strictly to the Jewish prohibition on graven images.

    “The Seleucid and Hasmonean Coins of Shiloh: What They Do and Do Not Tell Us about the Occupation of Second Century BCE Shiloh” Paper presented at Stone-Campbell Journal Conference, April 5-6, 2019 by Kevin W. Larsen, Ph.D.1 Geo-political factors make archaeological research difficult in the highlands of Israel (i.e., West Bank). While much progress has been made, the recovery and interpretation of the material culture is still lagging in comparison to other parts of the southern Levant. In many cases scholars are limited to textual evidence in constructing a history of the region. The Associates for Biblical Research, under the direction of Scott Stripling and the auspices of the Civil Administration of Judea and Samaria, began excavation work at Shiloh in 2017. After two seasons one hundred eighty-one coins have been found. The coins may be useful for our understanding of life at Shiloh, but there are also difficulties in using them for stratigraphy. The aim of the paper is to offer suggestions about how the coins may or may not assist in augmenting the literary evidence of the Seleucids and Hasmoneans in the second-century BCE in and around Shiloh. Recovery from the Babylonian invasion of Judah2 and the repatriation of Jews into their former homeland under the Persians was long and difficult. While the process was much quicker on the Mediterranean coast, where cities and large villages were settled, in the central hills there was but one city (Jerusalem) and small farmsteads that dotted the region. In the highlands few villages can be identified, with settlement activity being at best fragmented and dispersed.

    Talmudic Metrology IV: The Halakhic Currency Abstract. In 66 B.C.E. Palestine entered under Roman protection and from 6 C.E. on it would be under Roman administration. This situation persisted until the conquest by the Persians in the beginning of the seventh century. The Jerusalem Talmud was thus completely elaborated under Roman rule. Therefore, as for the other units of measure, the Halakhik coinage and the Jerusalem Talmudic monetary denominations are completely dependent on Roman coinage of the time and Roman economic history. Indeed, during the first century Tyrian coinage was similar to the imperial Roman coinage. Nevertheless, during the third century the debasement of Roman money became significant and the Rabbis had difficulty finding the Roman equivalents of the shekel, in which the Torah obligations are expressed and of the prutah, the least amount in Jewish law. In this article we describe the Halakhik coinage, originally based on the Tyrian coinage, and examine the history of the Shekel and the Prutah. We then examine the exegesis of different Talmudic passages related to monetary problems and to the Halakhic coinage, which cannot be correctly understood without referring to Roman economic history and to numismatic data that was unknown to the traditional commentators of the Talmud. Differences between parallel passages of both the Jerusalem and the Babylonian Talmud can then be explained by referring to the economical situation prevailing in Palestine and Babylonia. For example, the notion of Kessef Medina, worth one eighth of the silver denomination, is a Babylonian reality that was unknown to Palestinian Tanaïm and Amoraïm.

    The Coinage of the First Year as a Point of Reference for the Jewish Revolt (66-70 CE)* James S. McLaren There has been a notable absence of coinage in discussion of the 66-70 CE Jewish revolt. At best, it plays a minor role in the reconstructions. Ἀ key contention of the fol­ lowing discussion is the need to redress the existing imbalance. David Goodblatt made a significant step forward in this task with his recent investigation of a distinctive feature of the inscriptions on the bronze issues, the use o f‘Zion’.1 Here a more limited scope of interest is addressed, the coinage issued in the first year of the revolt. The context for this interest in the coinage lies in previous comments made about the difficulties of using Josephus’ account of the war.2 In our efforts to understand the revolt we have fallen prey to Josephus’ broad interpretation of how to read the situation. If our goal is to understand what happened and why then we need to gain independence from his interpretative framework. Rather than concede that such a task was impossible, it was proposed that a case study approach could be employed. However, there was no attention paid to other sources of information that could possibly provide alternative frameworks by which to understand the revolt. Here we turn to the coinage of the first year to consider what role, if any, it can play in examining the war. As such, a crucial rider to what follows is that we not confine the coinage within the framework of Josephus’ reconstruction.

    AJN Second Series 21 (2009) pp. 105–121 © 2009 The American Numismatic Society The Metrology of Judaean Small Bronze Coins David Hendin* Based on the the weights of over 10,000 bronze coins dating from 134 BC to AD 70, this study offers a comprehensive analysis of the weight standards for each series, and the role of fudiciary coinage in ancient Judea. Introduction The denominations and weight standards of ancient Jewish bronze coins have pre- viously been discussed. However, the samples used for study were often limited only to examples in the British Museum collection1 or to samples from a specific hoard or site.2 Further, average weights for Judaean small bronzes have generally been presented without statistical information beyond generic ranges and averages. This is a metrological study of 10,312 Jewish bronze coins of 27 general types and various denominations. The majority of the coins were weighed by the author, while other weights were obtained from published sources. The coins range in date from those of John Hyrcanus I (134–104 BC) to those struck during the Jewish War (AD 66–70). The specific types of coins studied were mainly dictated by sup- ply: some coin types are so rare that it was difficult to collect enough samples for meaningful statistics. When the topic is discussed, it makes use of broad stereotypes that seem more to serve a normative function condemning contemporary imperialism than a careful examination of data from antiquity. The present thesis aims to rectify this problem in three stages. The first part aims to contextualize the Gospel of Mark as specifically as possible, suggesting a provenance of Capernaum in Galilee in the mid-70s CE. A precise consideration of Mark’s provenance is a necessary starting point if one is to make claims about the evangelist’s experience with men of the military. The second part offers a thorough account of the military in early Roman Palestine, attending both to Mark’s compositional context (i.e., post-War Galilee) and the context which Mark depicts (i.e., Palestine 20s and 30s CE). This part has chapters encompassing both the demographic makeup of the military in Palestine and their function.
