When the topic is discussed, it makes use of broad stereotypes that seem more to serve a normative function condemning contemporary imperialism than a careful examination of data from antiquity. The present thesis aims to rectify this problem in three stages. The first part aims to contextualize the Gospel of Mark as specifically as possible, suggesting a provenance of Capernaum in Galilee in the mid-70s CE. A precise consideration of Mark’s provenance is a necessary starting point if one is to make claims about the evangelist’s experience with men of the military. The second part offers a thorough account of the military in early Roman Palestine, attending both to Mark’s compositional context (i.e., post-War Galilee) and the context which Mark depicts (i.e., Palestine 20s and 30s CE). This part has chapters encompassing both the demographic makeup of the military in Palestine and their function. The third part of the dissertation begins with consideration of three theories of violence that may elucidate Mark’s interactions with the military: Slavoj Žižek’s work on objective-structural violence, Pierre Bourdieu’s work on symbolic violence, and Michel Foucault’s work on violence and subjectivation. These theories are then deployed in the interpretation of Mark, drawing ii attention to how the military not only features at several pivotal moments in the Gospel, but looms in the background in many other locations. Here, it is shown that Mark is ambivalent about the military in a manner typical of his context: low-level officers are depicted positively, whereas common soldiers are understood as cruel bullies. iii Acknowledgments Labour, whether intellectual or otherwise, never occurs in a vacuum.     This coin, a genuine Biblical antiquity, is the first money issued by the Jewish people. The first Jewish coin was minted some 450 years after the Babylonian conquest, around 135 BCE , by John Hyrcanus I, King and High Priest of Judea. John was the first ruler of the legendary Hasmonean dynasty which restored Israel to Jewish power, giving rise to the so-called Second Temple Period. John took part in the uprising against the Seleucid Empire, as described in the Biblical books of Maccabees. Under his leadership, the Jews completely repelled the hated Seleucids from Judea, doubling the size of their kingdom and granting them the opportunity to mint these, the first Jewish coins. The Second Temple Period ended when the Romans destroyed the Temple and much of Jerusalem in 70 CE. The Emperor Hadrian rebuilt the ruined city 65 years later, but banished Jews from living there. It wasn’t until the establishment of Israel in 1948—some two thousand years later— that the Jewish people would issue another coin. This coin was minted between 135 and 40 BCE. The obverse shows a double cornucopia flanking a pomegranate—a fruit sacred to the early Jews. The cornucopia is a symbol of abundance, but derives from Roman mythology. It is likely that John Hyrcanus I incorporated this symbol as a nod to the mighty Roman Empire. The inscription on the reverse of the coin reads Yehohanan (John) the High Priest and the Council of the Jews. Note that there is no imagery of man or animal—as High Priest, John held strictly to the Jewish prohibition on graven images.

    In this week’s Parashah of Vayeshev, we read about Yosef and his ‘Ketonet Pasim’ – ornate robe. This week’s NLI resource features a poster of clothes’ store vocabulary including a couple of differentYaa types of ‘ketonet’. This poster was published by the Ministry of Education and Culture in the 1950s. It shows drawings of common articles of clothes and haberdashery together with their names in Hebrew. The poster is divided into five categories, being women’s clothes, men’s clothes, haberdashery, shoes and ‘whites’. Common phrases that a customer would need to know are also included on the poster. The poster shows the clothes that were commonly to be found in the Israeli wardrobe in the 1950s when food, clothing, and furniture were rationed. The style of the clothing is simple and basic. One of the phrases on the poster is: “Please put new soles and heels on my shoes,” which was probably more common than buying new shoes during the time of rationing. Due to changes in fashion and more practical ways of dressing, some of the items in this poster, such as corsets, suspenders, petticoats and overshoes are no longer frequently worn.     Introduction I Our knowledge and understanding of Judaism in antiquity is constantly chang- ing as each generation of scholars reads the ancient sources anew, and applies differing approaches to the interpretation of already familiar texts and sources. At the same time, the careful decipherment of the primary evidence, in the tra- dition of the historical philological school, remains crucial for any attempt to reconstruct the past. Yet, it is the discovery of new material sources, includ- ing new archaeological findings, and the benefit of improved readings of epi- graphic sources such as papyri, or early manuscripts of rabbinic texts, which stimulate new insights into Jewish history. The systematic analysis of the pri- mary sources, their collection, collation, and integration with previous data, must necessarily come before any effort to elucidate antiquity. Based on a solid platform of primary evidence, the balanced and judicious application of new approaches to reading ancient sources can impact greatly on the way we inter- pret the past. Modern research challenges traditional understandings of Jewish texts, recasts the histories of formative events and people, and questions fun- damental ideas and beliefs. This volume, reasserting the importance of this set of priorities offers new innovative studies, many of an interdisciplinary nature, in the broad field of ancient Judaism. It is dedicated to Tal Ilan as a tribute to her in recognition of the importance of her pioneering scholarship in ancient Judaism.   • Three Conquests of Canaan
    ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case.
