7 From the Editor

Once again it’s that time of year where we welcome back our Hollybrook neigh- bors who winter here in our wonderful community – together with their children and grandchildren who visit them. Let’s remember that our speed limit is 15 mph. Can you believe it? Yes, that’s right! 15. Not 30. Remember there could be a small child who darts out from between a parked car. At 15 mph, a driver will have a better chance of avoiding an accident.

For those winter residents who have pets, please remember you must provide Animal Regulations a current copy of your pet’s ra- bies vaccination records. Hollybrook now has a metal tag the pet must wear. And for those of our winter residents who will have visitors with pets, our Rules state those pets must be registered as guests and provide their current rabies vaccination records and be issued a Hollybrook guest metal tag. I know what you’re thinking. What a pain! While it might seem that way, should your pet accidentally get out of the building and be found wandering Hollybrook’s roads, the metal tag will help identify to whom it belongs (and possibly save it from becoming road pizza on Douglas Road). And yes, we’ve had a guest dog “escape” and Securi- ty was able to contact the person who was watching the dog. Happy ending.

For those of our winter residents who may not know, Coralie Crod- gen, Hollybrook’s editor for the past 14 years, passed away on August 31st. I am trying to fill her shoes and – not because her feet were large – they are BIG shoes to fill! Our magazine is designed for leisurely reading, with informative and helpful articles. Contributions and suggestions are always wel- come. 8 LETTER TO THE EDITOR From the Editor

3. Once your dog has mas- tered a few commands, you can begin to practice "Nothing in Life Is Free."

Before you give your dog anything (food, a treat, a walk, etc.) he must first perform one of the commands he has learned. For example:

In order for you to put your dog's leash on to go for a walk, he must sit (and remain seat- ed) until you've put the leash on. Sitting and then jumping up is NOT sitting and waiting.

When you feed your dog, he must sit and stay until you've put the bowl on the floor. The operative word is “stay”. No running around in circles; no barking; no jumping up and down. All 4 feet need to remain on the ground until the food bowl is on the floor.

33 CARIBBEAN AMERICAN CLUB Clubs Peggy Belcher

Hopefully you all stayed safe during hurricane Matthew. Many of you probably had friends and relatives in oth- er parts of Florida that experienced this devastating hurricane. Hopefully they’re doing well and shortly things will return to normal for them.

The Caribbean American Club is col- lecting dry and canned goods to send to Haiti that was once again devastated by Hurricane Matthew. Thank You to those of you who contributed.

Thanksgiving is a time for us to be with our families. In my family we have a saying: “Family First.” I think this year especially, it is a good motto for all of us to remember.

Our next meeting is November 8 @ 7:30 pm, Room218 of the recreation building. Enjoy “turkey day” and stay positive.

39 Etc... GROWING UP IN THE GREAT DEPRESSION A Series of Articles by Saul Schechter

The earliest recollection I have would be when I was around 5 or 6 years old. That goes back around 84 years. I do remember that times were good. I wish I had a picture of the house I was born in. It was 100 years old. It’s still there. We had a good life and I lived there till I was 7 or 8.

The house was a great house – a 3-story brownstone in Brooklyn, with steam heat. There was one tenant in the building, our family. My Mother and Father and us children lived on the parlor and middle floor, and Mrs. Hoffman rented the upstairs. She was my Mother’s best friend and tenant for all the years that we owned the house.

And then the Great Depression came. People who were millionaires one day were selling apples on the corner the next. People were jumping out of windows; people lost a lot of money. But you know what? They came back and they made more money than they did before. But that’s not the point. The point is it was tough times.

To be continued … MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT

For 2017 Medicare coverage, open enrollment is from October 15 to December 7, 2016. During this annual enrollment period you can make changes to various aspects of your coverage.

1. You can switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage, or vice versa.

2. You can also switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another or from one Medicare Part D (pre- scription drug) plan to another.

3. And if you didn’t enroll in a Medi- care Part D plan when you were first eligible, you can do so during the general open enrollment, although a late enrollment penalty may apply.

HELP! HELP!

If you are in an accident, in need of AAA or some other source of assistance, your cell phone can determine your actual physical and geographical location. This will allow only emergency response personnel to locate you, if you dial 9-1-1 from your cell phone. Each cell phone has a built-in GPS sys- tem which allows the emergency vehicles to locate you. Of course, the feature is only effective if you carry your cell phone with you.
