Fire Prevention Week 2013 “Prevent Kitchen Fires” In the past weeks, the Ossining Volunteer Fire Department was out in force educating our children for the 2013 National Fire Prevention week. Over 3,100 children from multiple Schools & Day Care centers were educated in general fire safety & prevention tips. This year’s theme being “Prevent Kitchen Fires” we ask you take a few moments and go over these safety tips. -When cooking, never leave your stove or appliances unattended. -Keep your stovetop clear of any objects that may catch fire while cooking. -If an Oven fire occurs, Turn off the heat and always remember to close the door. -Always keep a lid near you while cooking to smother grease fires, slid the lid over the pan, turn off the heat and leave covered until its completely cooled and out. We also ask that you go over with your children the importance of continuing the practice of fire safety in your homes 365 days a year. Checking your smoke and Carbon monoxide detectors monthly, going over an escape plan, 911 usage, and getting out and staying out in the event of an emergency are a few examples.
