Niemelä, Ph.D. Research Assistant: Dale Hardy Commemorating the November 29, 2004, Designation by the A.S.M.E. of R.G. LeTourneau’s Mountain Mover at LeTourneau University, Longview, TX as a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark November 29, 2004 Version 1.1B (October 31, 2007) © All Rights Reserved 1 This is the most recent revision of a paper submitted to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers: “Nomination of R.G. LeTourneau’s Mountain Mover for ASME Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark.” Four minor revisions have preceded this one: 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, and 1.04. The first major revision was 1.1A. This is a minor revision. The next minor one would be 1.1C. The next major revision would be 1.2A. * signifies that reference materials cited within a footnote contain pertinent pictures. A PERSONAL INTRODUCTION The present author’s interest in R.G. LeTourneau is long-standing. My father, George Niemelä, Sr., was a mechanic, welder, heavy-equipment operator, and businessman in northern California. When the author was a boy, Dad worked for R.G.’s brothers-in-law (Howard and Buster Peterson) at Peterson Tractor, a Caterpillar dealership based in San Leandro, CA. He was a machinist/welder in the first crew of Peterson’s Roller Exchange Shop. 2 In 1961 Dad opened an equipment rental yard in Stockton, CA (Bee Wise Tool and Equipment Rental). His business was two blocks from a Montgomery-Ward warehouse that once was R.G.’s second Stockton factory (built in 1930, expanded in 1934).

Upon completion, students should be able to explain operational theory and diagnose and repair automatic drive trains. Course Hours per Week: Class, 2; Lab Hours, 3; Semester Hours Credits, 3. SAFETY DISCLAIMER: Automotive work presents many hazards. A moment’s carelessness can cause injury to oneself or to others. Such mishaps can occur quickly due, in part, to the nature of the industrial tools used in automotive work. The weight of automobiles and the equipment used to fix them can even cause fatal injuries. Therefore, great care must always be taken in checking out equipment before use, and in using that equipment to work on automobiles. As we work to insure the safety of everyone in the Durham Tech automotive lab, it is the instructor’s responsibility to introduce students to equipment and to advise them on its safe operation. Those health and safety procedures are also presented in each textbook for each course in the automotive program. Students are responsible for mastery of that safety information. Durham Tech holds each student in every class responsible for reading and applying all of the information regarding personal and public safety and personal and public health in the required text. While working in the Durham Tech automotive lab, safety glasses must be worn by everyone.

  • Building a 1:8 Scale 1936 Citroen Traction Avant 11A
JRH SCALE CARS www.jrhscalecars.com Building a 1:8 Scale 1936 Citroen Traction Avant 11A Introduction In 1934 Citroen introduced a car that was radically different from almost all of the other cars on the road. It featured front wheel drive and unit body (monocoque) construction. Without a traditional chassis, it had a low center of gravity which, with torsion bar and independent front suspension, gave it significantly better road holding. Front and rear hydraulic brakes also gave it excellent stopping power. All this was at a time when a Rolls-Royce Phantom II still had a solid beam front axle, leaf springs, and mechanical brakes (albeit servo-assisted). The Citroen was called the Traction Avant and was far ahead of its time. It was another significant step in the revolution in car designs that took place in the 1930s. 1934 7A Although there was a production hiatus during World War II, the Traction Avant was in production from 1934 until 1957. In total, some 750,000 Tractions Avant were built. A significant number of those post WWII cars are still running. Model The transformation of car designs between 1929 and 1939 is nothing less than startling. So a model of a 1935 or 1936 version would fit well with my other 1:8 scale models; a 1933 Gurney Nutting Rolls-Royce Phantom II, a 1932 Figoni & Falaschi Rolls-Royce Phantom II and a 1935 Austin Seven Ruby all of which, in some way, represented that transformation. Those other models also marked the high and low ends of the car market.

  • Kenosha Engine Plant Investigation and Cleanup
Kenosha Engine Plant Investigation & Cleanup RR-894 February 2017 The former Chrysler Engine Plant property is located in the heart of Kenosha in southeast Wisconsin. The plant first opened for automobile production in 1902 under Thomas B. Jeffery and was part of Kenosha’s long-standing history in auto manufacturing, later housing Nash Motors and American Motors Company. The Kenosha Engine Plant property is 107 acres in size. Approximately 3,700 residential-related properties – of which 2,400 are single-family homes – and eight schools are located within one-half mile of the plant. Its general boundaries are: 52nd Street to the north; 60th Street to the south; 24th Avenue to the east; and 30th Avenue to the west. Over the years, a series of mergers and buyouts changed the company name several times – Nash Motors, Nash- Kelvinator and American Motors are a few examples. Eventually the Chrysler Corporation bought the site, and in 1998 Chrysler itself was bought by DaimlerAG, which owned the site until 2007, when Cerberus Capital Management bought the company. After manufacturing automobiles and automobile parts for over 100 years, the plant was a casualty of the 2009 recession and was shut down in the fall of 2010, after the A sign describing the history of auto production in Chrysler Corporation declared bankruptcy. Kenosha on the fence outside the Kenosha Engine Plant (photo courtesy DNR). Old Carco, a liquidation bankruptcy trust, owned the property after the Chrysler bankruptcy proceedings were finalized in May 2010. A settlement agreement, filed in the US Bankruptcy Court in October 2011, was reached with the state of Wisconsin, the city of Kenosha, the United States Government, JP Morgan Chase Bank (the first lien holder of the property), and the Old Carco Liquidation Trust.
