Somehow the industry Top 10 Poll has This Is The Plan rated ahead of Nicholas Beach, perhaps on the fact that the former has earned three times as much money in 2021. I don’t understand it, but it is far from an injustice. It’s more upsetting to see Abuckabett Hanover ranked ahead of Nicholas Beach before he has won a single Grand Circuit race. I respect Abuckabett Hanover and he is arguably the best 3-year-old pacing colt in North America right now, but you don’t get close to top billing without facing a full field of the best in the sport at least once or doing something spectacular along the way. Yeah, you could argue that he did upend the formerly unbeaten Perfect Sting and that vaults him into the ranks. I guess that is fair. My eye test reveals Nicholas Beach as the top dog among pacers and at least in the conversation with Manchego in the top spot of the poll. Speaking of Manchego, one has to marvel at her ability to not only win but set records into her 6-year-old campaign. The Nancy Takter trainee set a track record when stopping the clock in 1:51 3/5 and moved her career record to 35 wins in 58 starts.
