2020/2021 September 2020 ALBUKHARY INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY Undergraduate Prospectus 2020/2021 “Albukhary International University is where future leaders are characterized by steadfastness, self-discipline, and conviction to serve the society”. Syed Mokhtar Albukhary, Founder Albukhary International University (AIU) is a private non-profit education institution, a fully residential campus with state-of-the-art facilities. It was founded on the twin philosophy of Faith in God and Compassion for Humankind with the aim to provide opportunity to bright students from underprivileged and disadvantaged backgrounds to receive tertiary education and transform them into holistic, adaptable, balanced, well-rounded, and life-ready graduates who will be agents of change in societies. The university was built by the Albukhary Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization founded by Syed Mokhtar Albukhary, a Malaysian entrepreneur who has made charity a cornerstone of his business world. This is apparent and reflected in his words, “Whenever I do charity, my heart moves. It is not about corporate social responsibility. It is about caring, something that comes from the heart. My wish is that people with money will help those less fortunate so that the world is more just and fair to all.” In this respect, the Albukhary Foundation is the umbrella of AIU. Supported by the Albukhary Foundation, the environment created at AIU is conducive and of high standards, therefore the Founder believes that the deserving students are privileged to have the opportunity to study at AIU. The Founder has given the best for AIU Scholars, sincerely from his heart, in the spirit of never depriving the underprivileged from an education. Designed and constructed on 45 acres (18 hectares) site, the AIU campus is located near the city of Alor Setar, the capital of the State of Kedah in the north of Malaysia. The inspiring architectural splendour of the University campus is one that mirrors the centres of learning of yesteryears. It provides conducive living and learning environment for self- discovery, nurturing relationships and building understanding on global issues. Although several are even reminiscent of classical Muslim architecture during the golden age of learning then, the beauty of AIU lies not just in its rich and beautiful architecture but also- and very importantly-in the diverse enrolment of students from over 40 nationalities. At AIU, students are exposed to holistic educational approach through combined academic and social engagement programme within the niche of Social Business, which are carried out throughout the study period. Through its vision, mission and core values, AIU is committed to ensuring human dignity in line with the concept of “Inspiring Minds” as the core ethos and tagline of the University. The core values embraced by community of AIU are Aqidah (Belief), Akhlaq (Virtue), Adab (Ethics), Amanah (Responsibility) and Amalan (Conduct) (or known as 5As) and the practice of 8-hour rule; eight for the night’s sleep, eight for the day’s education and eight for helping others in need. The University currently offers a one year Foundation programme and several undergraduate programmes under School of Business and Social Sciences (SBSS), School of Education and Human Sciences (SEHS) and School of Computing and Informatics (SCI). 5As Core Values Aqidah - The instillation of faith and spiritual-based life of excellence. A person with strong Aqidah is a well-disciplined person who understands her / his purpose in this life and hereafter. With Aqidah, the person must have achieved the other 4As below: Akhlaq - The inculcation of moral virtues, internalisation of fine characters and being compassionate. A scholar’s code of behaviour should resemble the high Adab that she/ he carries and the morals compass all actions. Adab - Refers to the nurturing of learning excellence and humility in upholding dignity and preserving humanity. This is derived from the word 'ta’dib’ which means education. It is said that a person of high Adab is also a person of high education and knowledge. Adab embodies the attainment of the 'insan kamil’ or the perfect human beings. Amanah - Always be truthful and honest, having integrity in all our actions and intentions. This is a key principle that governs every aspect of the University. Amalan - The regeneration of tradition, and being innovative and focused to generate new generation. In every intention there must be an action, as evidently mentioned by the beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), It is pointless for us to dream or wish to do something but no action is taken on those good intentions: alas, we will be in a state of atrophy where nothing is done. The aforementioned 5As Core Values are reinforced through activities which foster leadership, volunteerism, civic responsibility, mutual cooperation, respect of diversity and human rights. It will also nurture staff and student‘s resourcefulness in promoting a life of dignity, well-being and success for individuals and societies living in peace and harmony in a sustainable, moral and ethical manner. Preface Professor Dato’ Dr. Abd Aziz Tajuddin, FASc, FIPM Vice Chancellor and President Albukhary International University Albukhary International University (AIU) is formed as an international private university with a difference, one that is valued by stakeholders for its competitive advantage and currently focuses on Social Business as her niche area.
