Shirehampton Remount Depot
Shirehampton Remount Depot During World War I the main form of transport for troops, munitions and supplies was the horse or mule. The military effort on the Western Front from August 1914 to November 1918 required a continual supply of these animals. Several Remount Depots were set up across the UK to help maintain this supply. Shirehampton was one of the largest and over 300,000 horses passed through Shirehapmton and Avonmouth between 1914 and 1918. By 1915 most of the animals were shipped over from Canada or the US to be stabled at Shirehampton before they were sent to the front as required. Andy O’Brien - WECA’s transport thinking and funding strategies (Pages 19-167) STATEMENT 1 – DICK DANIEL I am submitting the BATA reasons for instead investing in a tram / light-rail network for Bristol, Bath and the region. A proposal which will actually get people to switch from cars to trams, as I say in the submission, a switch that has never been demonstrated by buses, we are not against buses, we want buses, we want trams to be the backbone feed and linked to a comprehensive network of bus routes. I have also attached a chart showing the rise in passages numbers of the Manchester tram Metrolink, which has increased the numbers traveling by tram almost every year and now stands at 44.3 million journeys in the 2019/20 financial year. Also a short video of trams in the historic centre of Seville. A more technical document on the 'Technical, sociological and economic reasons why trams are an essential backbone to a bus based transport system’. I trace this shift through an examination of newspapers from three British regions during this period, including London, the Southwest, and the North. My research demonstrates that at the start of the war, the press featured early unity in support of the British war effort, with some regional variation. -

Prostitution in Bristol and Nantes, 1750-1815: A comparative study Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy at the University of Leicester Marion Pluskota Centre for Urban History University of Leicester July 2011 Abstract This thesis is centred on prostitution in Nantes and Bristol, two port cities in France and England, between 1750 and 1815. The objectives of this research are fourfold: first, to understand the socio-economic characteristics of prostitution in these two port cities. Secondly, it aims to identify the similarities and the differences between Nantes and Bristol in the treatment of prostitution and in the evolution of mentalités by highlighting the local responses to prostitution. The third objective is to analyse the network of prostitution, in other words the relations prostitutes had with their family, the tenants of public houses, the lodging-keepers and the agents of the law to demonstrate if the women were living in a state of dependency. Finally, the geography of prostitution and its evolution between 1750 and 1815 is studied and put into perspective with the socio- economic context of the different districts to explain the spatial distribution of prostitutes in these two port cities. The methodology used relies on a comparative approach based on a vast corpus of archives, which notably includes judicial archives and newspapers. Qualitative and quantitative research allows the construction of relational databases, which highlight similar patterns of prostitution in both cities. When data is missing and a strict comparison between Nantes and Bristol is made impossible, extrapolations and comparisons with studies on different cities are used to draw subsequent conclusions. -

It also considers whether any significant developments have been given planning permission, or have been built, which could have a significant impact upon air quality. A range of pollutants is monitored within the city including NO2, PM10, PM2.5 and O3. In 2014, all monitored pollutants complied with the air quality strategy objectives with the exception of NO2. In 2014, all recorded exceedences, at locations where there is relevant exposure, occurred within the existing Air Quality Management Area (AQMA). The existing AQMA has been declared on the basis of exceedences of the annual NO2 objective and for PM10, as a precautionary measure, as monitoring of PM10 within the city does not take place at ‘worst case’ locations. The annual average NO2 objective was exceeded at two diffusion tube monitoring locations outside of the AQMA. When they were adjusted to reflect the distance to the closest relevant 3 receptor, NO2 concentrations were predicted to be below the annual 40 µg/m objective at both of these locations.
