  • Shirehampton Remount Depot
Shirehampton Remount Depot During World War I the main form of transport for troops, munitions and supplies was the horse or mule. The military effort on the Western Front from August 1914 to November 1918 required a continual supply of these animals. Several Remount Depots were set up across the UK to help maintain this supply. Shirehampton was one of the largest and over 300,000 horses passed through Shirehapmton and Avonmouth between 1914 and 1918. There are no surviving physical remains and very few very few These images are used courtesy of the Shirehampton Book of images of the Remount Depot. Remembrance At the beginning of the war most of these http://shirehamptonbookofremembrance.webs.com/ horses came from British farms, but this supply was quickly exhausted. By 1915 most of the animals were shipped over from Canada or the US to be stabled at Shirehampton before they were sent to the front as required. STATEMENTS RECEIVED – WECA AUDIT COMMITTEE – 16 OCTOBER 2020 1. Dick Daniel – Trams/light rail (Pages 1-13) 2. Dave Redgewell – Transport Issues (Pages 14-15) 3. Christina Biggs – Rail and Transport Issues (Pages 16-18) 4. Andy O’Brien - WECA’s transport thinking and funding strategies (Pages 19-167) STATEMENT 1 – DICK DANIEL I am submitting the BATA reasons for instead investing in a tram / light-rail network for Bristol, Bath and the region. A proposal which will actually get people to switch from cars to trams, as I say in the submission, a switch that has never been demonstrated by buses, we are not against buses, we want buses, we want trams to be the backbone feed and linked to a comprehensive network of bus routes. I have also attached a chart showing the rise in passages numbers of the Manchester tram Metrolink, which has increased the numbers traveling by tram almost every year and now stands at 44.3 million journeys in the 2019/20 financial year. Also a short video of trams in the historic centre of Seville. A more technical document on the 'Technical, sociological and economic reasons why trams are an essential backbone to a bus based transport system’. Best regards Dick Dick Daniel BATA Board Member https://bathtrams.uk 1 BATH AREA TRAMS ASSOCIATION WECA 16th October 2020 The UK now has a growing list of cities and city-regions that has discovered that investing in trams / light-rail pays off. These are following the lead of cities around Europe and the world, including the USA, regions that are at the forefront of taking action on climate change, healthy active citizens and are highly economically productive.

As we emerge from the special circumstances of the Covid crisis we need modern transport planning for active travel, health, opportunity, inclusion, social justice, and action on climate change. Bristol City Council 2015 Updating and Screening Assessment for Bristol City Council In fulfillment of Part IV of the Environment Act 1995 Local Air Quality Management July 2015 LAQM USA 2015 1 Bristol City Council Local Authority Andrew Edwards, Steve Crawshaw Officer Sustainable City and Climate Change Department Service CREATE Centre Smeaton Road Address Bristol BS1 6XN Telephone 01179 224331 e-mail [email protected] Report Reference BCC_AQ_USA_2015_1.0 number Date July 2015 LAQM USA 2015 2 Bristol City Council Executive Summary This Updating and Screening Assessment summarises the results of Bristol City Council’s air quality monitoring data for 2014. It also considers whether any significant developments have been given planning permission, or have been built, which could have a significant impact upon air quality. A range of pollutants is monitored within the city including NO2, PM10, PM2.5 and O3. In 2014, all monitored pollutants complied with the air quality strategy objectives with the exception of NO2. In 2014, all recorded exceedences, at locations where there is relevant exposure, occurred within the existing Air Quality Management Area (AQMA). The existing AQMA has been declared on the basis of exceedences of the annual NO2 objective and for PM10, as a precautionary measure, as monitoring of PM10 within the city does not take place at ‘worst case’ locations. The annual average NO2 objective was exceeded at two diffusion tube monitoring locations outside of the AQMA. When they were adjusted to reflect the distance to the closest relevant 3 receptor, NO2 concentrations were predicted to be below the annual 40 µg/m objective at both of these locations.

  • Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways (FOSBR) Response to Bristol Transport Strategy Nd 2 November 2018
Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways (FOSBR) Response to Bristol Transport Strategy nd 2 November 2018 Summary We welcome the strategy and many of the elements in it but we note that these proposals sideline rail and light rail and are focused largely on road-based schemes including new roads. Only a handful of new rail stations are proposed, ignoring the potential to make the most of the existing network. We recognise and agree with the importance of buses and new routes, particularly orbital and limited stop routes, but with the caveat that these should be on existing roads and not used as an excuse to build unnecessarily costly and over-engineered infrastructure for buses or to be shared with private vehicles as has occurred with much of MetroBus. The draft strategy outcomes do not specifically include carbon reduction, and air quality improvement is included in Outcome 1 as an adjunct to “efficient movement of traffic around the city, with increased resilience of the network”. These omissions suggest that the Council is not focusing adequately on key aims. FOSBR believe that the potential for rail and light rail to help with congestion, carbon reduction, air quality and achieving better health has been underestimated by the draft strategy. Familiar excuses about narrow streets and the location of rail in relation to existing (road) corridors are used to justify decisions about rail and light rail. These do not bear serious examination and seem to be aimed to justify avoiding taking any serious action to reduce car use. These are written off as “extremely radical measures”.
