GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY VISITING FILM SERIES April 29, 2020 I am pleased to be here to talk about my role as Deputy Director of the Washington, DC International Film Festival, more popularly known as Filmfest DC, and as Director of the Arabian Sights Film Festival. I would like to start with a couple of statistics: We all know that Hollywood films dominate the world’s movie theaters, but there are thousands of other movies made around the globe that most of us are totally unaware of or marginally familiar with. India is the largest film producing nation in the world, whose films we label “Bollywood”. India produces around 1,500 to 2,000 films every year in more than 20 languages. Their primary audience is the poor who want to escape into this imaginary world of pretty people, music and dancing. Amitabh Bachchan is widely regarded as the most famous actor in the world, and one of the greatest and most influential actors in world cinema as well as Indian cinema. He has starred in at least 190 movies. He is a producer, television host, and former politician. He is also the host of India’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Nigeria is the next largest film producing country and is also known as “Nollywood”, producing almost 1000 films per year. That’s almost 20 films per week. The average Nollywood movie is produced in a span of 7-10 days on a budget of less than $20,000. Next comes Hollywood. Last year, 786 films were released in U.S. -

The very ideological foundation of every civilizational discourse is primarily based on their onto-epistemological premises. One of most influential master- pieces of 20th century, Edward Said’s Orientalism, set the trend for contextual- izing the way in which Western discourse represented and constructed Eastern discourse. Limiting the import of this work only to a literary contribution was intentionally aimed to intellectually undermine its “compelling arguments” to deconstruct the colonial hegemony of post-Renaissance Eurocentric premise of Western thought. The argument started by Edward Said became the pri- mary precursor for some of most known intellectuals and Hamid Dabashi, being one of the closest admirers and followers of Edward Said, took up this task of furthering the intellectual legacy of his mentor. The foreword by Wal- ter Mignolo, one of the well-known specialists in colonial/postcolonial critical circles has buttressed the argument of this boldly unconventional and intellec- tually eponymous project. The films are many and the project is ongoing. Why film? Film is often an extraordinarily effective tool. I found that many students in my classes seemed more visually literate than print literate. Whenever I showed a film, they would remember the minute details, characters names and sub-plots. Films were accessible and immediate. Almost the whole class would participate and debates about the film’s meaning were lively. Film showings also improved attendance at teach-ins. At the Truro, Massachusetts, Library in July 2014, the film Voices Across the Divide was shown to the biggest audiences the library has ever had, even though the Wellfleet Library and several churches had refused to allow the film to be shown. Organizing is also important. When a film is controversial, as many in this pamphlet are, a thorough organizing effort including media coverage will augment the turnout for the film. Many Jewish and Palestinian groups list films in their resources. This pamphlet lists them alphabetically, and then by number under themes and categories; the main listings include summaries, to make the films more accessible and easier to use by activist and academic groups. 2 1. 5 Broken Cameras, 2012. -

Guises of Transnationalism in Israel/Palestine: A few notes on 5 Broken Camerasi Yael Friedman University of Portsmouth The discussion of Israeli cinema is governed, predominantly, by the perspective of national cinema. The dominant framework of analysis tends to be that of Zionism and, by and large, both in critical writing and exhibition contexts, a very clear dichotomy is maintained between Israeli and Palestinian cinemas and between Israeli cinema and cinemas of the Middle East. Such a governing perspective often excludes or distorts a critical discussion of the transnational in films that emerge both from Israel and Palestine. The changes brought about by processes of globalisation to the production, circulation and reception of films around the world also shape contemporary cinema in Israel/Palestine to a considerable extent. Throughout the history of Palestinian cinema its production and exhibition contexts were distinctively transnational, while Israel’s small-scale national film industry increasingly shifts towards transnational modes of production. The survival and the recent success of Israeli cinema, both internationally and domestically, is largely dependent upon co-production agreements, the involvement of European funders, and the global festival circuit. Despite this prominent trend, only a few recent publications address Israeli cinema from a transnational perspective.ii This short article follows in a similar vain. It offers a critical discussion of the acclaimed documentary 5 Broken Cameras (Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi, Israel/Palestine/France/Netherland, 2011), whose joint Palestinian-Israeli direction and transnational context of production, challenge the national boundaries of both Israeli and Palestinian cinemas while, at the same time, probelmatizing the notion of the transnational. -

. Volume 9, Issue 1 May 2012 Connecting Islam and film culture: The reception of The Message (Ar Risalah) among the Moroccan diaspora Kevin Smets University of Antwerp, Belgium. Summary This article reviews the complex relationship between religion and film-viewing among the Moroccan diaspora in Antwerp (Belgium), an ethnically and linguistically diverse group that is largely Muslim. A media ethnographic study of film culture, including in-depth interviews, a group interview and elaborate fieldwork, indicates that film preferences and consumption vary greatly along socio-demographic and linguistic lines. One particular religious film, however, holds a cult status, Ar Risalah (The Message), a 1976 historical epic produced by Mustapha Akkad that deals with the life of the Prophet Muhammad. The film’s local distribution is discussed, as well as its reception among the Moroccan diaspora. By identifying three positions towards Islam, different modes of reception were found, ranging from a distant and objective to a transparent and subjective mode. It was found that the film supports inter-generational religious instruction, in the context of families and mosques. Moreover, a specific inspirational message is drawn from the film by those who are in search of a well-defined space for Islam in their own lives. Key words: Film and diaspora, media ethnography, Moroccan diaspora, Islam, Ar Risalah, The Message, Mustapha Akkad, religion and media Introduction The media use of diasporic communities has received significant attention from a variety of scholarly fields, uncovering the complex roles that transnational media play in the construction of diasporic connectedness (both ‘internal’ among diasporic communities as well as with countries of origin, whether or not ‘imagined’), the negotiation of identity and the enunciation of socio-cultural belongings.
