Una proposta de jazz d'origen francès conegut també com jazz manouche, creada als anys 20 per Django Reinhardt i Stéphane Grappelli del Hot Club de France. Acordió, guitarres, violí i contrabaix confereixen una sonoritat especial que agermana la música clàssica europea i el jazz de manera magistral i única. Sis solistes de ?jazz manouche Ludovic Beier està dotat d'una tècnica excepcional, ha portat l'acordió per nous camins, a més de treballar amb els grans noms de l'escola gypsy manouche com Angelo Debarre, Dorado Schmitt, Costel Nitescu o Florin Niculescu. Ha efectuat gires pels Estats Units on ha tingut l'ocasió de tocar amb músics com Paquito d'Rivera, Joe Lovano i James Carter, o de presentar-se al Carnegie Hall amb Toots Thielemans. NEW ALBUM RELEASE - SIX & SIX | Swing to Bop In 2019 RÊVE BOHÈME released their sixth album on the Norwegian Gypsy Jazz label Hot Club Records. As the album title refers to, RÊVE BOHÈME has picked SIX lesser-known swing compositions from their hero DJANGO REINHARDT and matched them with SIX bebop standards that Django loved to play! All the songs on the album have the characteristic acoustic sound of RÊVE BOHÈME and with their modern and dynamic interpretation of these classic songs RÊVE BOHÈME makes an exiting contribution to the contemporary Gypsy Jazz-scene today. SIX & SIX | Swing to Bop was recorded in one studio session with RÊVE BOHÈME having fun and playing live, choosing mostly “first takes” of the recorded material – so this album is a must for all Django-enthusiasts and Gypsy Jazz lovers! Since then they have been touring and playing clubs and festivals in Norway, Sweden, Finland, France, England, Germany, Holland, Greece and Poland. The band have played and performed with international gypsy jazz artists such as Dorado Schmidt, Robin Nolan, Andreas Öberg, Jon Larsen & HCN, Gustav Lundgren, Basily, Paulus Schäfer, Angelo Debarre, Gary Potter, Biel Ballester, Mozes Rosenberg - and many others. Over the years Rêve Bohème have recorded in different line-ups and musical settings. Their fusion between the Nordic and South- European traditions have always created a unique musical universe which can be heard on their five previous albums: Django goes North 2012 (Calibrated), Café Django 2009 (Calibrated), Best of Rêve Bohème 2007 (Hot Club Records), Django’s Dream 2005 (Calibrated) and Django Jalousie 2002 (Cope). -

The Annals of Volume 75, Number 4 Iowa Fall 2016 A QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF HISTORY SPECIAL ISSUE: WOMEN AND IOWA JOURNALISM In This Issue STEPHANIE GROSSNICKLE-BATTERTON, a doctoral candidate and graduate instructor in the Department of American Studies at the University of Iowa, shows how the Woman’s Standard, a monthly news- paper produced by the Iowa Woman Suffrage Association from 1886 to 1911, incorporated rural themes in its rhetoric, showed evidence of suf- frage work in rural areas, and to varying degrees became a counterpublic space for rural women where contributors explored issues relevant to Iowa farm women. JENNY BARKER-DEVINE, associate professor of history at Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois, explores the motivations of the women who produced the Emerald Goose, a humor magazine published at Iowa State College during World War I. She argues that they were not simply responding to an opening created by the war but were actively contesting for space in the student newsrooms and asserting their right to participate in curricular and extracurricular journalism. TRACY LUCHT, assistant professor in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication at Iowa State University, surveys the storied career of Dorothy Ashby Pownall from her days as a “sob sister” at the Des Moines Capital during World War I through her publications in Ladies’ Home Journal and the Saturday Evening Post and until her retirement from the Iowa City Press-Citizen in 1955. Pownall’s wide-ranging work, Lucht argues, reveals her methods of exercising agency within a patriarchal field and illustrates why historians must expand what they consider important journalism if they are to make their narratives more inclusive of women. -

Il a, au travers de ses multiples collaborations musi- cales, développé une sonorité propre et un langage singulier. Une singularité qui tient d'abord à sa personnalité, mais aussi à sa solide formation classique nourrie, par ailleurs, par l'expérience tzigane puis orientée vers le jazz dans ses diverses variantes. Son irréprochable technique violonistique et sa phénoménale vir- tuosité - admirées de tous, musiciens et auditeurs - ne sont jamais, pour lui, une fin en soi mais bien les moyens d'exprimer sa person- nalité musicale. De même, l'évidente filiation spirituelle avec Stéphane Grappelli (1908-1997) n'est en rien une limite à son expression propre mais bien un aiguillon qui le pousse à toujours innover. Florin commence le violon avec son père vers quatre ou cinq ans. En 1973, il entre à six ans à l'Académie de musique George Enescu de Bucarest dont il sort avec un premier Prix. En 1984, il obtient une mention spéciale du jury au concours international Henri Wieniawski, à Lubiana. A vingt-trois ans, il décide de quitter la Roumanie pour la France et arrive à Paris au début des années 1990. En 1991, il rencontre le guitariste Boulou Ferré, la première des nombreuses collaborations du violoniste. Toujours en 1991 rencontre avec Pascal De Loutchek du trio "ARBAT" dont l'enregistremement du disque "Ilô". -

As we reflect on the outstanding success of the 80th Anniversary Festival in Alexandria, VA, the summer draws to a close bringing with it a sense of great pride and accomplishment. The array of talent fea- tured during our gala Anniversary festival showcased the accordion at its finest, in a variety of genres and settings. A wonderful review with pictures and videos can be found online at www.ameraccord.com and serves as a lasting souvenir of the spectacular gathering. As always, I would like to offer my sincere thanks to the AAA Past- President, Linda Reed and Board of Director, Rita Davidson for their kind assistance with the AAA Newsletter. Autumn leaves cover the quays along the banks of the River Seine. Under the Paris skies, the fall wind sweeps through the city. In a café on the Place de Tertre on Montmartre, Gypsy guitarist Tchouta Adel, son of old-time Matelo Ferret cohort Spatzo Adel, is playing duets with Jeannot. In a Russian cabaret across town, Matelo's sons, Boulou and Elios Ferré, unfurl their sophisticated amalgamation of Gypsy music and bebop. Rodolphe Raffalli, Sami Dausset, Serge Krief, and Angelo Debarre are all displaying their craft. To the north of the city at La Chope des Puces, a café in the infamous flea market, Ninine and Mondine play traditional gitane music, while Patrick Saussois and his Alma Sinti band stir up the dancing crowd at a favored guinguette, a quayside patio dancehall along the old river. Some seventy years after Django and his Quintette du Hot Club de France first melded musette and Gypsy music with swing, jazz manouche is alive and well in the city of its birth, Paris. We are waiting for the music to begin at Le Bistro d’Eustache near Les Halles at 37, Rue Berger. Well-known Selmer guitar expert François Charle and I keep an anxious eye out for the arrival of Gypsy guitarist Moreno. Le Bistro d’Eustache is one of the best cafés for jazz manouche, recommended to me by Hot Cub de Norvège guitarist Jon Larsen. The walls are plastered with ancient posters announcing the annual Django festival at Samois-sur-Seine, providing a remembrance of things past. -

The Walter Ostanek Story The story of “Canadaʼs Polka King”, Walter Ostanek begins in the small town of Duparquet, Quebec, where he was born Ladislav John Ostanek on April 20, 1935, of Slovenian heritage (decent). When he was four, Walterʼs family moved to the St.Catharines, Ontario area and by the age of nine, Walter began playing the button diatonic accordion. At age 12, he received his first piano accordion, and only four years later, in 1951, he broadened his horizons and formed his own group, his first Country Western/polka Band. Two years later, he had joined with Abbie Andrews and the Canadian Ranch Boys, and was an instrumental part of their radio show, (three programs a week). At age 21, Walter felt he was ready to proceed further on his own, and on Saturday, January 26, 1957, his new band played its first engagement at the German Village in Niagara Falls, Ontario the day had finally come after 13 years of study, hard work, and determination. Walterʼs dream had come true – the Walter Ostanek Band was now a reality. The next milepost in Walterʼs life bears the date February 22, 1857, when he and his bride, Irene, exchanged their vows in marriage. With their two children, they now reside in St.Catharines, Ontario, Canada. In his leisure time, Walter favours a quiet evening at home, where he immerses himself in his favorite music, including Polkas and Country. Some of his favorite artists are; Americaʼs Polka King, Frankie Yankovic, and Country artists, Ray Price, George Strait, Randy Travis, Charlie Pride, George Jones, Alan Jackson, and Clint Black, to name a few.
