HOLDING BACK THE RIVER: The rock wall protecting the old dump beside Awatere River at Te Araroa was doing its job on Sunday, with the river now carving a path right next to the site. The wall is part of emergency works by Gisborne District Council after high tides ate into the old dump earlier this month and washed out ute- loads of rubbish. The council is holding a community meeting tomorrow to discuss a long-term repair for the site, with some locals calling for it to be completely excavated and cleared of rubbish. Te Araroa woman Ripeka Irwin said the “sickening” smell coming from the old dump remained a concern but she understood the council was working to cover the site in more gravel and soil to stymie the odour. District council community lifelines director Dave Wilson said some cover material would be put over the site as part of remedial works. Mr Wilson was in Te Araroa on Friday and did not detect any methane in the odour coming off the old dump. He said odour was generated as waste degraded and it was now being released into the atmosphere because of the landfill breach, which exposed the waste to water and air, as well as the use of construction equipment on top of the site. Contractors would need to stop work immediately if they smelled methane, Mr Wilson said. The community meeting at Hinerupe Marae in Te Araroa begins at 5.30pm. Picture supplied

When we were racing out of Palmerston North I was getting bored, and was basically on my way out of the sport. “But coming to Gisborne has revived me.” Rees said he and Ethan had kept coming back to Gisborne each season because of the level of appreciation shown by local club members and fans. “We hear ‘thanks for coming’ hundreds of times whenever we come here, and that’s what keeps us coming.” Rees has won the New Zealand stockcar title five times, and the superstock championship once. No other stockcar driver has a record that compares, and he has long been regarded as a ‘legend’ in the sport. He has also won the prestigous Robin Pratt Memorial stockcar title in Palmerston North seven times over the 18 years he contested it. “That’s something I am particularly proud of because Robin was a good mate of mine.” In announcing the driver-of-the-year award, superstock rep Trevor Mullooly said it was going “to the one and only Peter Rees”. “This man loves the sport of speedway immensely,” Mullooly said. “He’s helped us with certain things behind the scenes and brought some of the best superstocks in the country into our club with a ‘G’ on them. “Pete’s a teams racer extraordinaire and a great member of our club.” The Youth Competitor of the Year was ministocker Cassy Robertson. “This young lady showed good sportsmanship both on and off the race track and didn’t get caught up in the hype and overreactions of race meetings,” the TOP DRIVERS: New Zealand stockcar racing “legend” Peter Rees, above left, was thrilled to be named the Gisborne Speedway award citation read.
