Light Shadows: Loose Adaptations of Gothic Literature in American TV Series o... 1 Light Shadows: Loose Adaptations of Gothic Literature in American TV Series of the 1960s and early 1970s Dennis Tredy 1 In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, in a somewhat failed attempt to wrestle some high ratings away from the network leader CBS, ABC would produce a spate of supernatural sitcoms, soap operas and investigative dramas, adapting and borrowing heavily from major works of Gothic literature of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The trend began in 1964, when ABC produced the sitcom The Addams Family (1964-66), based on works of cartoonist Charles Addams, and CBS countered with its own The Munsters (CBS, 1964-66) –both satirical inversions of the American ideal sitcom family in which various monsters and freaks from Gothic literature and classic horror films form a family of misfits that somehow thrive in middle-class, suburban America.

  • 1 a Lesson from History
1 A Lesson from History: Germany from 19331945 March 6, 2016 Brian R. Wipf The National Socialist German Workers’ Party (we know it as the Nazi Party) had, like all political parties, a platform. This platform was produced in 1920, 13 years before the Nazi Party became the ruling political party in Germany when Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor and 25 years before the end of WW2. It’s amazing to see how this platform conceived so many years earlier came to fruition. The Nazi platform had 25 points. It sounds a lot like any political platform in one respect. It addresses matters of law, economics, culture and governance. One interesting fact about the Nazi platform is that it included a religious position. Many European countries did not have (and still do not have) the principle or belief in the separation of church and state like we do in America; instead, many foreign governments actually support a particular church with money and legislation. That’s a little strange to us; we’d never dream of the government giving baptist churches, for example, a stipend to do their work, nor would we ever imagine the government requiring Christian education (that still happens in many part of our world). The Nazis had a religious position and it’s spelled out in point 24 of the 25point party platform. Listen to point 24. We demand freedom of religion for all religious denominations within the state so long as they do not endanger its existence or oppose the moral senses of the Germanic race.

A 0 H R I S T I A N CRITIQUE OF TOTALITARIANISM A Christian Critique Of Totalitarianism A Thesis Submitted To The Graduate Faculty of The University of Richmond In Candidacy For The Degree of Master of Arts Department of Sociology By Clyde Norwood Parker, B.A., Th.M. FOREWORD In presenting a subject of this kind it is evident that some limitations must be set. A full treatment of Totalitarianism would necessitate not only an examination of its various aspects as exemplified by the several na tions of the world under Dictator rule today, but also some consideration of strong totalitarian tendencies in many of the so-called democracies of the world. Likewise, Christianity is an all-inclusive term un der which are many religious denominations with their in dividual organization and peculiar interpretation of the Christian Gospel. This makes it necessary to present A Christian Critique rather than ~Christian Critique. Therefore, it shall be the purpose of this study to examine National Socialism in Germany, perhaps the most conspioious example of the totalitarian ideology today, from the view point of Protestant, or rather non-Catholic, Christianity.

  • Two Kingdoms in the Third Reich Transcript
Two Kingdoms in the Third Reich Transcript Date: Thursday, 9 March 2017 - 1:00PM Location: Barnard's Inn Hall 9 March 2017 Two Kingdoms in the Third Reich Professor Alec Ryrie This is a series of lectures on ‘extreme Christianity’, and it does not get much more extreme than this. You are familiar with Godwin’s Law, also known as the reductio ad Hitlerum: the notion that every argument in the modern world eventually progresses to the point where someone invokes a Nazi comparison, and the whole thing then collapses. There is a reason for that. Thanks to the Nazis, since 1945 Western civilisation has had something which it had not had for at least two centuries before that: an all-but universally accepted reference point for evil. That is important for any attempt to understand our culture, but it is especially important from the point of view of the history of religion in the West. Because defining evil, the whole business of mapping out what morality is, is supposed to be the core business of any religious community. And in the case of Nazism, Europe’s main religious communities plainly failed to do this. The slow realisation of Nazism’s evil was an essentially secular event, and the fact that our public life is now organised around an essentially secular definition of evil seems to me to be a key fact in understanding the history of religion in modern times. Today I want to look at the sorry story of how German’s Christian communities responded to Nazism: a story of collaboration, enthusiastic enabling, and of strictly limited pushback.

Starting from The Fellowship Foundation founded in the USA in the 1930s and looking at similar and interconnected developments in various countries from South America, Africa, and Europe, the article explores theological foundations of today's world- wide ascend of fascism. Using the example of Anders Behring Breivik’sfamous terrorist attack in Norway, it explores theoretical background for Alt-Right attacks on political correctness and ‘cultural Marxism’. Looking into the 'end of the world' theology and its morality, the article explains deep relationships between Christian fundamentalist prosperity theology and Israel. The article connects Christianity’s forward-looking, linear view of history with ‘end of the world’ theology and capitalism. It explores the postdigital and post-truth nature of evangelical Christians’ public communications and links them to various anti- intellectualist tendencies such as the anti-vaccination movement. Using insights from Marxism, critical pedagogy, and liberation theology, the article demystifies Christian fundamentalist theology and points towards opportunites for resistance.
