It gave us something to focus on.” “I think the lyrical concept definitely helped in making the album a coherent whole,” Merlin adds. On »The Spell«, CELLAR DARLING have cemented their sound. Juxtaposing darkness and light, the album soars with melody, pum- mels with heavy passages and is peppered throughout with progressive flourishes, folky interludes and classical elements, as well as their use of hurdy gurdy and flute. “I think prog fits us best,” says Merlin. “Prog isn’t just about guitar solos, long songs or technical ability: for me, it’s pushing the limits of genre. We don’t want to set any boundaries for ourselves, and to me, that is the definition of progressive music.” His enthusiasm for grandiose rock and prog bands like QUEEN and DREAM THEATER shines through in »The Spell«, and it comes as no surprise that Anna is the child of two professional opera singers, as her stunning vocals glide majestically throughout this ambitious album. But the ambition of »The Spell« doesn’t stop with the music and lyrics: CELLAR DARLING have created an audiobook that’s narrated by Anna to help complement the album’s story, and they enlisted Romanian graphic designer, Costin Chioreanu (OPETH, ULVER, WARDRUNA and more) to create vivid illustrations and animated videos for every track. “He’s the artwork rock star in the metal scene!” laughs Anna. “I was a huge fan of his – I actually have a sleeve tattoo with artwork that he did for ULVER. So I got in touch with him about that and kept in touch ever since. He’s an amazing artist: we just sent him the music and lyrics, and he delivered.” For CELLAR DARLING, the intricate artwork is central to the album. “Even now when I am listening to an album, I like to be able to look through the artwork,” Merlin says. “To hold the sleeve in your hand while you listen. It’s very much a part of the album experi- ence, in my opinion: I grew up with my dad’s record collection, he had something like 10,000 vinyl! It was a more deliberate way of listening to music. It’s amazing that now WE have something like this, that you can actually spend some time looking at while listening to the music. So I think it’s amazing that we are able to make the artwork available digitally as well, in the form of animated videos for each and every track, and on our website, too.” “It gives more importance to the concept,” Anna concludes. “Having something like a bonus track would have been great, but it wouldn’t have completed what we started. The Native American tradition, the tribal religions of Africa, the sophistication of Hindu belief and practice and the more recently revived Japanese tradition, Shinto, are widely acknowledge as the authentic native animistic tradition of their respective areas. In marked contrast, the European native tradition, from the massive civilizations of Greece and Rome to the barley documented tribal systems of the Picts, the Finns and other norther margins of the continent, has seen as having been obliterated totally. The Shrestha 2 people forgotten here, are the Celtic pagans. Their culture was superseded first by Christianity and Islam and, more recently, by post-Christian humanism.

I examine three significant roles – musicians, audiences, and mediators, and focus on the interaction between the localized Chinese metal scene and metal globalization. This thesis project uses multiple methods, including textual analysis, observation, surveys, and in-depth interviews. In this thesis, I illustrate an image of the Chinese metal scene, present the characteristics and the development of metal musicians, fans, and mediators in China, discuss their contributions to scene’s construction, and analyze various internal and external factors that influence the localization of metal in China. After that, I argue that the development and the localization of the metal scene in China goes through three stages, the emerging stage (1988-1996), the underground stage (1997-2005), the indie stage (2006-present), with Chinese characteristics. DISTINGUISHING POSSIBILITIES FOR METAL SUB-GENRES Izvorni znanstveni članak / Original Scholarly Paper UDK: 78.036 "19/20" aBStraCt The different sub-genres of metal music, which have formed in the last decades, are not only of interest due to their diverse and unique characteristics, but also evidence a variety in metal music whereby its clichéd black and gloomy world gains a bit of color. This multitude of sub-genres will inevitably lead to musicians, fans and even researchers no longer being able to differentiate between the genres. With Viking, pagan, and folk metal, this interesting process of fusion is already taking place, although it is possible to distinguish Viking and pagan at least from folk metal. Keywords: instrumentation, metal sub-genres, musical analysis, popular music introDuCtion During the last few decades many different metal sub-genres have developed, from the classic, and especially from the extreme, metal genre. Comprising bands such as Ensiferum, Finntroll, Korpiklaani and Turisas – surprisingly only Finnish bands – so-called folk metal is one of these sub-genres, which became part of the metal mainstream during the 2000s.1 For Spracklen the popularity of Finnish folk metal is based on commercialization, while other possible reasons could be the national distinction from Norwegian black and Swedish death metal, or, at least in Finland, a phase of increased inclusion of folk elements in popular music. “The combination of a nationally institutionalized folk tradition and the transnational genre of […] metal”2 is also mentioned by Neilson as a reason for the success of Finnish folk metal.
