Animated Stereotypes – An Analysis of Disney’s Contemporary Portrayals of Race and Ethnicity Alexander Lindgren, 36761 Pro gradu-avhandling i engelska språket och litteraturen Handledare: Jason Finch Fakulteten för humaniora, psykologi och teologi Åbo Akademi 2020 ÅBO AKADEMI – FACULTY OF ARTS, PSYCHOLOGY AND THEOLOGY Abstract for Master’s Thesis Subject: English Language and Literature Author: Alexander Lindgren Title: Animated Stereotypes – An Analysis of Disney’s Contemporary Portrayals of Race and Ethnicity Supervisor: Jason Finch Abstract: Walt Disney Animation Studios is currently one of the world’s largest producers of animated content aimed at children. However, while Disney often has been associated with themes such as childhood, magic, and innocence, many of the company’s animated films have simultaneously been criticized for their offensive and quite problematic take on race and ethnicity, as well their heavy reliance on cultural stereotypes. This study aims to evaluate Disney’s portrayals of racial and ethnic minorities, as well as determine whether or not the nature of the company’s portrayals have become more culturally sensitive with time. To accomplish this, seven animated feature films produced by Disney were analyzed. These analyses are of a qualitative nature, with a focus on imagology and postcolonial literary theory, and the results have simultaneously been compared to corresponding criticism and analyses by other authors and scholars. Based on the overall results of the analyses, it does seem as if Disney is becoming more progressive and culturally sensitive with time. However, while most of the recent films are free from the clearly racist elements found in the company’s earlier productions, it is quite evident that Disney still tends to rely heavily on certain cultural stereotypes. -

THESIS WONDER WOMEN IN THE VIRTUAL WORLD: HOW FEMALE SHEPARD REDEFINED THE FEMALE HERO ARCHETYPE IN VIDEO GAMES Submitted by Chelsea McHenry Department of Communication Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Spring 2021 Master’s Committee: Advisor: David Scott Diffrient Nicholas Marx Rosa Mikeal Martey Copyright by Chelsea Rebecca McHenry 2021 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT WONDER WOMEN IN THE VIRTUAL WORLD: HOW FEMALE SHEPARD REDEFINED THE FEMALE HERO ARCHETYPE IN VIDEO GAMES AAA video game protagonists typically represent the white, heterosexual male. While standards are changing, there remains a considerable discrepancy between the number of male and female protagonists available. This study intends to examine how video game producers can move forward with creating resonant AAA protagonists by examining one of the first protagonists who presented unforeseen equality. This thesis explores the character of female Shepard from BioWare’s video game series Mass Effect (2007-2012) and what elements made her a fan favorite and marketable. Using Jim Bizzochi’s video game narrative framework and Shunsuke Nozawa’s concept of ensoulment related to voice work, this thesis argues that FemShep redefined the video game landscape. She served to create her own space as a character and not merely a gender-flipped construct of her male counterpart. The media and popular culture have a strong presence in people’s everyday lives, and they affect how people understand themselves and their reality. This multidisciplinary study combines the study of religions and fan studies to examine how people use popular culture to answer existential questions and needs that have usually been associated with the cultural realm of religion. This study concentrates on the everyday meaning-making of fans and how it can interplay with religious myths and rituals. This thesis answers the following research questions: What kinds of characteristics of myth and ritual can be found in the fandom of vampire-themed television shows? What do these characteristics tell us about the relationship between religion and popular culture in our contemporary culture? This study examines the fandom of vampire-themed television shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003), True Blood (2008–2014) and Vampire Diaries (2009–2017). I chose this topic because these shows were extremely popular, and because they also connected with the tradition of vampire folklore by discussing cultural values and norms. -
