    The History Public Schools Don’t Teach James Madison wrote that “a people who mean to be their own governors must be armed with the power that knowledge gives”. In “Democracy in America” Alexis de Tocqueville noted that Americans of his day were far more knowledgeable about government and the issues of the day than their counterparts in Europe. Tocqueville wrote “every citizen receives the elementary notions of human knowledge; he is taught, moreover, the doctrines and the evidences of his religion, the history of his country, and the leading features of its Constitution”. The honor recognizes individuals whose outstanding achievements reflect The Bradley Foundation’s mission to restore, strengthen and protect the principles and institutions of American exceptionalism. Shlaes will receive the award at the 17th annual Bradley Prizes ceremony on Monday, September 13th at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. “Amity’s exhaustive research and analysis of American economic history continues to inform influential decision makers,” said Rick Graber, President and CEO of The Bradley Foundation. “Her insight into how well-intentioned government programs have had the opposite effect of what they set out to achieve, provides valuable lessons for today. The Bradley Foundation is proud to honor Amity for her scholarship, which has contributed to important dialogue on economic policy.” Shlaes chairs the board of the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation, the official foundation dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of America’s 30th president. The Coolidge Foundation is the sponsor of the popular Coolidge Scholarship, a full college scholarship for academic merit, and the Coolidge Senators program, which hosts 100 students each summer for a stay in Washington at Coolidge House to learn them about the values of President Coolidge. Miscellaneous 22 iii Coolidge Family Papers, 1802-1932 Doc 215 Scope and Content Note The Coolidge family papers are a collection of correspondence, financial and legal papers, and photographs of the Coolidge family of Plymouth, Vermont, 1802-1932. The focus of the papers is John Coolidge (1845-1926), but other family members and generations are represented as well. Most significant of these is John’s son, President Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933). There is also a substantial amount of material of John's father, Calvin Galusha Coolidge (1815-1878), and, because of the family’s involvement in local government and politics, there are many papers concerning the town of Plymouth. The collection is stored in ten document boxes, Doc 215-221, 390-392, and has oversize material in MS Size B, C, and D. Biographical Sketch Calvin Galusha Coolidge was born September 22, 1815, in Plymouth, Vermont, the son of Calvin and Sarah (Thompson) Coolidge. He married Sarah Almeda Brewer in 1844. They had two children: John Calvin (1845-1926) and Julius Caesar (1851-1870). Calvin G. Coolidge served as justice of the peace, town agent, constable, and selectman for the town of Plymouth.

After posting a 79-83 record with the majors’ highest payroll, the Baltimore Orioles were hit with a $3,138,621 luxury tax bill for the 1998 season. Other taxpayers included the Red Sox ($2,184,734), Yankees ($684,390), Braves ($495,625) and Dodgers ($49,593). The tax threshold, originally expected to reach $55 million in 1998, actually leaped to $70,501,185, including $5,576,415 per team in benefits. This figure represents the midpoint between the fifth- and sixth-highest payrolls. The luxury tax rate falls from 35% to 34% in 1999, then disappears entirely in 2000. Owners go 9-2 in arbitration. Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera of the Yankees were the only players to win their arbitration hearings, although 51 of the 62 cases settled before a ruling.

Latham This thesis analyzes the role of illness in the administrations of three twentieth-century presidents—Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR), and John F. Kennedy (JFK)—who had serious health problems unknown to the mass media and the public in their respective eras. Some of that hidden information has been uncovered by historians and others. Wilson, for example, had a devastating stroke in October 1919, after which his wife and physician hid him in the White House, with the former functioning as an unofficial acting or co-president for many months.
