Sie spannen einen historisch weiten Bogen von den Höhlen der ältesten Eiszeitkunst und steinzeitlichen Pfahlbauten über den römischen Grenzwall des Limes und die Klosteranlagen auf der Reichenau und in Maulbronn bis zu den Wohnhäusern des Architekten Le Corbusier in Stuttgart. Höhlen der ältesten Eiszeitkunst auf der Schwäbischen Alb In den sechs seit 2017 zum Welterbe zählenden Höhlen im Lonetal und im Achtal lebten vor etwa 35.000 bis 40.000 Jahren Menschen, die dort einzigartige Zeugnisse menschlichen Kunstschaffens hinterließen. Nach jahrzehntelanger Forschung konnten Archäologen rund 50 kleine Skulpturen aus Mammutelfenbein und acht Flöten aus den Höhlen vorlegen. An keinem anderen Ort der Welt wurden bislang ältere Kunstobjekte gefunden. Zu sehen sind die Kunstwerke der Eiszeit in verschiedenen historischen Museen in Baden- Württemberg: Das Urgeschichtliche Museum Blaubeuren beherbergt neben anderen Originalfunden die „Venus vom Hohle Fels“. The theme, Museums and Cultural Landscapes, defined the direction clearly. The board strove for a complete session with an attractive and current topic. The flat landscape below the sea level, reclaimed with the help of windmills, was too obvious. The river landscape seemed to be better. The Dutch poet Hendrik Marsman described the scenery in the 1930s: “Thinking of Holland I see broad rivers, flowing slowly through endless lowlands” (“Denkend aan Holland zie ik breede rivieren traag door een oneindig laagland gaan”). The delta of the rivers Rhine and Meuse has dominated the Netherlands for ages and largely shaped the country. Two thousand years ago the Romans occupied this region and made the water part of their defense system: the Limes. Making this historical element visible for inhabitants and tourists alike, is a challenging task for museums, large and small. This endeavor is highly topical in view of the nomination of the Lower Germanic Limes, the Roman frontier on the Rhine, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The nomination has been applied by the Dutch government supported by the German states North Rhine Westphalia and Rhineland Palatinate. The proposal was accepted and ICOM Netherlands organized a session on the topic of the Limes at the General Conference, together with other ICOM and ICOM-related organizations.

Since the Roman Limes is often not accessible or not recognizable, new mobile service applications are vital to create an understanding and raise awareness of this historical asset which is often located in rural areas. The mobile software and hardware industry is rapidly changing and new applications must meet the requirement of long-term sustainability and competitiveness. This large-scale demonstrator project LIMES presented in this paper proposes a mobile system for a richer enjoyment and experience for cultural tourism with a new interaction technology: Augmented Reality (AR) as an element of the “Limes-App” is a new development on the market and the future of mobile applications. LIMES does not only refer to the Roman Frontier, it is also an abbreviation for “Large Scale Innovative and Mobile European Services for Culture Tourism in Rural Areas”. LIMES brings together the ancient (Roman Frontier) with new services (LIMES- App) in order to present cultural heritage in an innovative way. The initial plan was to meet physically in Constanța, Romania, but due to the still continuing COVID-19 situation and the related travel restrictions in Europe the partners met online. However, this circumstance allowed opening the meeting to a wider group of participants, thus welcoming also several representatives of Associated Strategic Partners as well as the Danube Transnational Programme Joint Secretariat. In two sessions, the institutions in charge of the individual work packages (WP) in cooperation with the involved partners presented the current state of progress of their work. Therefore, the participants of the meeting heard about the final milestones in the archaeological and historical characterisation of the Roman Danube Limes as archaeological site cluster (WP T1) as well as on the first development steps and the planned outline of the Living Danube Limes mobile and web application (WP T1). Further, the results of the museums landscape analysis along the Danube (WP T2) and the current state of progress of the shipbuilding was presented to them (WP I1). Since the partnership could not physically visit the most Eastern partner country Romania, as initially foreseen for the meeting, the Romanian colleagues prepared a virtual side programme in order to introduce the partners to their great practical work and on-site initiatives as well as to give them an insight to their archaeological landscape.
