BRAIN DAMAGE Album Walk the Walk BRAIN DAMAGE Album Walk the walk Sortie le 16 octobre 2015 (CD, vinyle & digital) PRESENTATION Aux commandes du projet Brain Damage depuis 1999, et au fil d’une discographie riche de plus de 10 albums, Martin Nathan a déjà exploré bon nombre des différentes facettes de son style de prédilection, le dub. Après avoir contribué à en poser les fondations en France, il n’a cessé de participer à son évolution en en proposant des versions tour à tour urbaines, atmosphériques, expérimentales, et récemment beaucoup plus proches de certains modèles développés au Royaume-Uni. C’est cette fois ci à Kingston, en Jamaïque, qu’il s’est rendu pour réaliser la partie principale de ce nouvel opus, dans l’idée d’explorer plus profondément les origines du style. Son lien d’amitié avec Samuel Clayton Jr, ingénieur du son et producteur internationalement reconnu (Steel Pulse / Toots & the Maytals) a été prépondérant dans le choix de cette destination. Tracklisting album Ce personnage incontournable en Jamaïque lui a en effet ouvert les 01 Walk The Walk feat Ras Michael portes du mythique Harry J studio (Bob Marley / Burning Spear), et a pu lui 02 Vamp Dem feat Kiddus I permettre d’établir des connections improbables avec des artistes légendaires 03 Lion And Goat feat Winston Mc Anuff pour d’inoubliables sessions studio. 04 Mama Words feat Horace Andy 05 Pray Fi Di Youts feat Willi Williams L’idée première du projet était de faire appel à certains acteurs de la 06 Fyah Bun feat Willi Williams fameuse génération qui a contribué dans les années 60/70 à faire ce qu’est 07 Youts Of Today - Harry J 2015 feat le reggae, et par extension, le dub. Se succèdent donc derrière le micro 5 Horace Andy vétérans du style, tous contemporains, mais aux sensibilités et aux parcours 08 Birthday Song feat Winston Mc Anuff totalement distincts. 09 Grandma Puddin’ feat Kiddus I Aujourd’hui toujours superstars pour certains, à l’image de Horace 10 Love Makes The World Go Round Andy, à la voix reconnaissable entre mille et coutumier des collaborations feat Ras Michael avec Massive Attack, un peu oubliés pour d’autres, comme Kiddus I, qui fut pourtant le héros d’une scène clé du film culte «Rockers» en 1978, tous ont su garder leur talent intact. C’est le cas de Willi Williams, auteur de l’intemporel hit «Armagideon time» repris par The Clash comme par tant d’autres, mais aussi de Winston Mc Anuff, qui ne cesse encore à l’heure actuelle de nous étonner par ses collaborations avec des artistes français pourtant si éloignées de l’univers reggae (Camille Bazbaz, Fixi). Enfin, le doyen Ras Michael, qui fût pendant tant d’années l’un des ambassadeurs des traditions Nyabinghi à l’échelle internationale, continue de nous sidérer par ses interventions vocales empreintes de tant de spiritualité, et son jeu de percussion unique. Tous ont su, le temps d’une session studio se fondre à l’univers musical proposé par Brain Damage, et se prêter également à l’exercice de style suggéré par l’artiste : écrire la majorité de leurs textes sur le thème de leur enfance, l’enfance, la jeunesse, et l’éducation. Le résultat de ces collaborations est unique, constitué d’un mélange de maturité et de fraîcheur dû sans doute à l’ouverture d’esprit et au talent de chacun des protagonistes. BIOGRAPHIES HORACE ANDY Né en 1951 à Kingston, élevé par sa mère, Horace Hinds grandit dans une famille mélomane et commence sa carrière de chanteur âgé seulement de 16 ans. Coxsone Dodd le renomme rapidement en hommage au chanteur Bob Andy alors au sommet de son succès pour le distinguer de son cousin, Justin Hinds également sur le devant de la scène à la même époque. Horace Andy connait immédiatement un énorme succès aux côtés de Dodd, et beaucoup de ses singles sont propulsés au sommet des charts. Au début des années 70, il quitte pourtant le producteur pour travailler avec bon nombre de ses confrères, Phil Pratt, Derrick Harriot, Ernest et Jo Jo Hoo Kim, Harry J et Niney pour ne citer qu’eux. Ce fut néanmoins son union avec Bunny Lee au milieu des années 70 qui lui apporta ses plus grosses retombées financières. Il s’installe en 1977 aux USA ou il réalise notamment l’incontournable album «In The Light», et sa déclinaison dub signée Prince Jammy. Il crée également son propre label Rhythm, puis collabore entre autres avec Tappa Zuckie, puis Don Carlos et Chaka Demus dans les années 80, avant de déménager à Londres ou il rencontrera entre autres Jah Shaka. Dans les années 90, le groupe de trip hop bristolien Massive Attack le contacte, et il apparaîtra sur 4 des 5 albums, ces albums, connaissant alors un succès mondial sans précédent. KIDDUS I Né en 1944, Kiddus I devient subitement une légende en 1978 grâce à son apparition dans le film culte «Rockers». Dans la scène clé qui lui est consacrée, tournée au Harry J studio, il y interprète le fameux «Graduation in Zion», un classique jusque là resté inédit pour les besoins du film à la demande du producteur Jack Ruby et du réalisateur Ted Bafaloukos. Néanmoins, alors que des artistes comme Burning Spear ou Gregory Isaac profiteront du rayonnement international de «Rockers», il fut impossible même d’entendre les enregistrements de Kiddus I jusqu’à une période toute récente, la majorité des bandes masters de l’époque ayant en effet été «perdues». Kiddus se qualifie lui même, non sans humour, comme l’un des artistes les plus enregistrés, et les moins édités de Jamaïque. Accompagné du guitariste China Smith, il sort enfin son premier album officiel en 2004 grâce au label Makasound. On peut tout de même répertorier bon nombre de ses singles, produits dans les années 70 et 80, dont certains on été réédités par le label japonais Dubstore en 2007. WINSTON MAC ANUFF Né en 1957 dans une famille de pasteurs, il commence comme beaucoup de ses contemporains par chanter du gospel. Il enregistre dans les années 70 deux albums dont le succès restera confidentiel, même si certains morceaux, comme «What Man Saw» seront internationalement diffusés. Il connait néanmoins une notoriété tardive, notamment en France en collaborant avec le label Makasound, qui réédite ses albums, ainsi que d’autres morceaux enregistrés à la même période, sous la forme d’une compilation : «Diary of the silent years, 1977-2000». Celui que l’on surnomme «The Electric Dread « commence alors un période d’activité artistique intense, avec la réalisation de l’album «Nostradamus», mais surtout avec divers projets, s’éloignant bien souvent du reggae, impliquant des artistes français tel que Camille Bazbaz, M, Java, ou plus récemment l’accordéoniste Fixi. WILLI WILLIAMS Né en 1953, il travaille aux côtés de Coxsone Dodd dès 1968 et fonde avec deux de ses amis le sound system «Tripletone». Il produit quelques titres pour Delroy Wilson, The Versatiles ou encore Rhythm Force, connus plus tard sous le nom des Wailers. Il s’installe à Toronto au Canada en 1974, ou il se lie d’amitié avec Jackie Mittoo avec qui il collabore régulièrement. En 1979, il travaille à nouveau avec Coxsone Dodd et enregistre l’immense «Armagideon Time». Cette chanson est en parfaite adéquation avec l’esprit punk, qui attire immédiatement l’attention du groupe The Clash qui la reprendra en face B du classique «London Calling», ainsi que sur l’album «Black Market». Il enregistre par la suite chez Studio One de nombreux singles, ainsi que les albums «Armagideon Time» et «Messenger Man» en 1980. Il collabore avec le producteur anglais Jah Shaka au début des années 90, le temps de deux albums, et produira les suivants sur le label Drum Street. Plus récemment, la double compilation «From Studio One to Drum Street» a connu également un succès international. RAS MICHAEL Né en 1943, Michael George Henry est élevé dans une communauté rasta. Au milieu des années 1960, il crée son propre label Zion Disc avec lequel il réalise de nombreux singles, tout en travaillant pour Coxsone Dodd comme musicien de session studio. Il est aussi le premier membre du mouvement rasta à avoir sa propre émission de radio en Jamaïque. Il contribue également à la même époque à des sessions studio aux côtés de Bob Marley et Lee Scratch Perry au fameux Black Ark Studio. Il réalise de nombreux albums avec son groupe, The Son of Negus, et devient rapidement très renommé pour ses interprétations de chants et de percussions traditionnelles Nyabinghi. Il vit aujourd’hui en Californie, où il préside au centre international culturel rastafari Marcus Garvey de Los Angeles.     Norman Hugh Redington Rastafarians and Orthodoxy From Evangelion, Newsletter of the Orthodox Society of St Nicholas of Japan (Arcadia, South Africa), Number 27, September 1994: “Orthodoxy and Quasi-Orthodoxy”* Orthodox mission reached one of its lowest points in the fifty years between 1920 and 1970. The Bolshevik Revolution in Russia and its consequences virtually put a stop to any mission outreach by the Orthodox Church. In the same period there was an enormous growth in Christian and semi-Christian new religious groups and movements. In South Africa alone there are nearly 8000 different African independent churches. Wandering “bishops” (episcopi vagantes) travelled the world, starting new sects and denominations as they went. Some of the groups wanted to be Orthodox, and many thought they were Orthodox. In recent years, many of these groups have been “coming home”, seeking in one way or another to be united to canonical Orthodoxy. Many of these groups have connections with one another, either through common origins, or because they have later joined with each other. Some groups are found in South Africa, some in other places. There are often connections between groups in different parts of the world. In this issue of Evangelion we will look at some of these groups. * Evangelion is a newsletter for those interested in Orthodox Christian mission and evangelism. It is published by the Orthodox Society of St Nicholas of Japan, and is sent free of charge to members of the society and to anyone else who asks for it. Drawing increasingly upon digital technologies and the internet to assert a sense of community even as they cultivate an austere biblical persona, adher- ents of Rastafari can be thought of as simultaneously modern and antique. Their claim to antiquity is grounded in a collectively professed African- Ethiopian identity that has not only resisted the ravages of enslavement, colonialism, and European cultural domination but is seen to transcend local differences of culture and language. Theirs is a way of life organized around theocratic principles that begin with a recognition of the divine in all peoples and as the basis of all human agency. Rastafari assert the universal relevance of these principles to the conditions of modernity even as they persistently claim social justice on behalf of all peoples of African descent exploited by colonialism and the prevailing global capitalist-imperialist system. Based on these general themes, the Rastafari movement has come to represent a large-scale cultural phenomenon that has long since burst the chains of its colonial containment in Jamaica. From the late 1960s onward it has spread throughout the Caribbean and the Central and South American rimland to the major metropoles of North America and Europe as well as to many sites on the African continent.

    Jamaica, Jamaica! - an exhibition conceived by the Cité de la Musique - Philharmonie de Paris, produced and executed by Sesc São Paulo The show comes to Brazil to occupy the exhibition space at Sesc 24 de Maio Nitty Gritty, Jammy Studio, 1985. Picture by Beth Lesser From March 15th, Sesc 24 de Maio, located in the centre of São Paulo, features an exhibition conceived by the Cité de la Musique - Philharmonie de Paris, produced and executed by Sesc São Paulo, Jamaica, Jamaica!, comes directly from the french institution, where it was shown last year. The exhibition is curated by french journalist and film director Sébastien Carayol and can be visited until August 26th. A chronological and historical panorama on Jamaican music is shown in eight cores, contemplating a political, social and cultural view, considering the island’s musical production as a guiding line of that history as well as the findings of the researches about the expansion of Jamaican music in Brazil - mainly in Maranhão, Bahia and São Paulo. The exhibition takes up the fifth floor of Sesc 24 de Maio, equivalent to 1,300m², and intends to show the Caribbean country, which is the birthplace one of the main musical and cultural styles of the second half of the twentieth century, beyond reggae and its major icon, Bob Marley. In this context, Jamaica, Jamaica! seeks to recollect part of history by means of looking at conflicts and postcolonial encounters which led to a unique and universal musical movement. To illustrate diversity and heritage, the show brings together photographs, album covers, musical instruments, leaflets, graphic material from street parties, documents, audios and images from private collections and institutions.
