CLARA FRANCESCA HAYWARD In revenge the wicked Queen of the Mice cast a spell over Drosselmeyer’s nephew, Hans-Peter, HANS-PETER/THE NUTCRACKER ALEXANDER CAMPBELL which transformed him into an ugly Nutcracker Doll. The only way to break the spell was for THE SUGAR PLUM FAIRY LAUREN CUTHBERTSON the Nutcracker to slay the Mouse King, thereby committing an act of great bravery, and for THE PRINCE FEDERICO BONELLI a young girl to love and care for him in spite of his awful appearance. ACT I When Drosselmeyer is invited to entertain the guests at a Christmas party that his DROSSELMEYER’S ASSISTANT LUCA ACRI friends, the Stahlbaums, are giving, he decides that this could well be the opportunity he DR STAHLBAUM CHRISTOPHER SAUNDERS has been looking for. MRS STAHLBAUM ELIZABETH MCGORIAN Their daughter, Clara, is a little younger than Hans-Peter imprisoned in the Nutcracker, FRITZ CASPAR LENCH and what better time than Christmas, when the mice are busy stealing the leftovers, for CLARA’S PARTNER TRISTAN DYER a confrontation between the Mouse King and the Nutcracker? He decides to put the Nutcracker in the tender care of Clara and makes a special Christmas Angel to guide her GRANDMOTHER KRISTEN MCNALLY through her task. GRANDFATHER ALASTAIR MARRIOTT When all the guests have departed and the house is asleep, Clara, in search of the DANCING MISTRESS CHRISTINA ARESTIS Nutcracker, creeps downstairs and discovers Drosselmeyer waiting for her. He draws her CAPTAIN JOHANNES STEPANEK into his own special world of fantasy where time is suspended, and exerts all his powers HARLEQUIN FERNANDO MONTAÑO to transform the living room into a great battlefield and summons the Mouse King. In the COLUMBINE LETICIA STOCK SOLDIER MARCELINO SAMBÉ ensuing fight between the mice and the toy soldiers the Nutcracker slays the Mouse King, VIVANDIÈRE MAYARA MAGRI but only through the intervention of Clara, who, out of compassion, saves the Nutcracker’s ST NICHOLAS LUKAS BJØRNEBOE BRÆNDSRØD life. Transformed into his real self, he dances with Clara and they find themselves in the Land MOUSE KING NICOL EDMONDS of Snow. Drosselmeyer then sends them on a magic journey to the Sugar Garden in SNOWFLAKES the Kingdom of Sweets where they meet the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince. ARTISTS OF THE ROYAL BALLET Freed at last from his imprisonment inside the Nutcracker, Hans-Peter recounts to SINGERS LONDON ORATORY JUNIOR CHOIR DIRECTOR, CHARLES COLE the Sugar Plum Fairy his great adventure and how Clara saved his life. They then join in a magnificent entertainment put on by Drosselmeyer to honour them for their bravery. ACT II Returning to reality, Clara runs out into the street in search of Drosselmeyer and SPANISH DANCE CHRISTINA ARESTIS, JOHANNES STEPANEK, TARA-BRIGITTE BHAVNANI, ERIC UNDERWOOD, encounters a strangely familiar young man, while back in his workshop Drosselmeyer prays TIERNEY HEAP, FERNANDO MONTAÑO that his efforts will be rewarded. • The Royal Ballet Celebrates American Choreographers George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins
27 May 2021 #OurHouseToYourHouse Fundraising for our future The Royal Ballet celebrates American choreographers George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins The Royal Ballet celebrates the rich history of American ballet in classic works by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, two choreographic giants of the 20th century. Balanchine and Robbins open’s on 4 June and is live streamed on 11 June at 7.30pm priced £16. The programme includes two classic works by Balanchine; Apollo and Tchaikovsky Pas De Deux. Apollo was created for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1928 and is regarded as a masterpiece of neoclassicism in its striking depiction of the young god of music and his three muses. Set to music by Igor Stravinsky the ballet was last performed by The Company in 2014. In 1960 Balanchine created Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux for New York City Ballet. The ballet is a showcase of technical challenges and bravura and is set to a long-lost movement from Tchaikovsky’s original score for Swan Lake. Jerome Robbins played a crucial role in the development of American ballet as a contemporary of Balanchine and as an influential figure in Broadway. His 1969 ballet Dances at a Gathering is an ode to pure dance, set to music by Chopin. While plotless, the intimacy of the ballet creates a powerful sense of community which promises to resonate powerfully with audiences and dancers again following its revival in 2020 just before lockdown. This programme features a host of debuts by Royal Ballet Principals Fumi Kaneko, Yasmine Naghdi, Matthew Ball, Cesar Corrales and Vadim Muntagirov and First Soloists Claire Calvert, Melissa Hamilton, Mayara Magri, Anna Rose O’Sullivan and Reece Clarke The event will be broadcast live via the Royal Opera House website on Friday 11 June at 7.30pm, priced at £16.00 per household and will be available to watch on demand until 10 July.

We have great pleasure in sharing ballet spanning the generations from Ninette de Valois’s third act of The Sleeping Beauty to a world premiere by one of our Company choreographers. Anemoi by First Soloist Valentino Zucchetti was created especially for the talents of the youngest members of The Royal Ballet. Inspired by Greek mythology where Anemoi gods rule over the winds, this world premiere ushers in brighter times with positive winds of change and the warm arrival of spring. A series of evocative duets follows from the two choreographers who shaped the early history of The Royal Ballet, Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan, alongside some of the most distinctive voices in dance today, Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor, Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon and the internationally acclaimed Swedish choreographer Mats Ek. Ashton’s effervescent Voices of Spring and MacMillan’s BEAUTY poignant Winter Dreams ‘farewell’ pas de deux accompany McGregor’s Morgen, a touching moment of hope for better times as conveyed in Richard Strauss’s setting of John MIXED Henry Mackay’s poem, and Wheeldon’s heartfelt After the Rain pas de deux set to Arvo Pärt.
