Zakaj? Kako? Kdaj? Današnje globalno stanje stvari in duha le stežka napelje k misli, da bo čas, ki bo prišel, lepši, boljši, pravičnejši, nasploh svetlejši. Brezkončno nasilje, suženjstvo kapitalu, teptanje pravic šibkejših, brezsramno bogatenje elit, onesnaževanje, brezmejno izkoriščanje omejene narave, prenaseljenost, vratolomne družbeno-politične spremembe, tekmovalnost, nemoč pravne države, vladavina potrošništva in samopromocije, populizem, fašizmi vseh vrst in oblik ter nenazadnje – propad najosnovnejših vrednot, kot sta kultura in izobrazba, na katerih je vzniknila zora človeštva. Zapustiti varno domače dvorišče in z namenom stopiti v svet, širiti poglede in obzorja misli, spodbujati občutljivost, glasno protestirati proti krivicam, so-ustvarjati rešitve namesto čakanja, da jih ponudijo – vse prevečkrat bajeslovni – drugi. Tanja Hladnik, direktorica festivala 6 Wild Times In the visions of the world of the future created by human imagination throughout the history of cinema, we can sometimes see images of wild nature rampantly overgrowing the last vestiges of civilisation. The mysterious charm of post- apocalyptic aesthetics does not drown out the series of simple, but chilling questions: Why? How? When? Today’s global state of things and the human condition can hardly make us think that we can expect a nicer, better, more just and, in general, brighter future. There’s endless violence, servitude to capital, trampling on the rights of the weaker, shameless enrichment of the elites, pollution, unlimited exploitation of limited natural resources, overpopulation, reckless socio-political changes, competitiveness, powerlessness of the rule of law, the reign of consumerism and self-promotion, populism, fascism of all shapes and forms and, last but not least, the decline of basic values such as culture and education, on which the dawn of humanity had risen. What if wild nature, that which is most primitive in humans, is already spreading across the once cultivated world? Here and there in the dark, pre-apocalyptic bushland, one can find Islands and Archipelagos of optimism, individuals and groups that actively strive to work for the social and public good. They leave their safe familiar backyard and go out into the world, spread ideas and broaden horizons, encourage sensitivity, loudly protest against injustices and co-create solutions instead of waiting for them to be offered by – all too often mythical – others. There is a sea of ways to be socially active. In the last fourteen years, we at Isola Cinema have lived social activism by bringing visionary films closer to the audience, showing courageous films that do not compete with each other, but nevertheless rouse people’s emotions and trigger discussions. We feed it with the liberty of thought and words, opportunities to learn, the connection of guests and visitors from all walks of life and a curious exploration of the past, present and future of cinema and cinemas. Although cinema and cinemas have a value in themselves, these wild times make it impossible and foolish to ignore their social power. The most condensed summary of this year’s 14th edition of the Kino Otok – Isola Cinema International Film Festival would be: the urgency of action that transcends the individual, intervenes in society and changes it for the better. Most of the programme will take place in Izola, between 6 and 10 June, while the festival satellites in Ljubljana, Koper, Sežana, Tolmin and Idrija will pulsate with film between 1 and 20 June 2018. During this time, we will pose countless questions about the films and the related issues, examine answers to them, think about the constancy of change and make plans for – hopefully! – future meetings. Ever since the emergence

  • Drainage Network Development in the Keanakāko'i
JOURNAL OF GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH, VOL. 117, E08009, doi:10.1029/2012JE004074, 2012 Drainage network development in the Keanakāko‘i tephra, Kīlauea Volcano, Hawai‘i: Implications for fluvial erosion and valley network formation on early Mars Robert A. Craddock,1 Alan D. Howard,2 Rossman P. Irwin III,1 Stephen Tooth,3 Rebecca M. E. Williams,4 and Pao-Shin Chu5 Received 1 March 2012; revised 11 June 2012; accepted 4 July 2012; published 22 August 2012. [1] A number of studies have attempted to characterize Martian valley and channel networks. To date, however, little attention has been paid to the role of lithology, which could influence the rate of incision, morphology, and hydrology as well as the characteristics of transported materials. Here, we present an analysis of the physical and hydrologic characteristics of drainage networks (gullies and channels) that have incised the Keanakāko‘i tephra, a basaltic pyroclastic deposit that occurs mainly in the summit area of Kīlauea Volcano and in the adjoining Ka‘ū Desert, Hawai‘i. The Keanakāko‘i tephra is up to 10 m meters thick and largely devoid of vegetation, making it a good analog for the Martian surface. Although the scales are different, the Keanakāko‘i drainage networks suggest that several typical morphologic characteristics of Martian valley networks may be controlled by lithology in combination with ephemeral flood characteristics. Many gully headwalls and knickpoints within the drainage networks are amphitheater shaped, which results from strong-over-weak stratigraphy. Beds of fine ash, commonly bearing accretionary lapilli (pisolites), are more resistant to erosion than the interbedded, coarser weakly consolidated and friable tephra layers.
