The 2011 USA Cross Country Championships will be contested on February 5, 2011in San Diego, California and these championships will be hosted by the San Diego-Imperial Association of USA Track & Field. Participating athletes will be vying not only for national championship titles in the junior, senior and master’s categories, but also for positions on the US team that will compete at the 2011 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Punta Umbra, Spain. Preceding this great competition will be a community race in which local runners will have the opportunity to compete on the same course as the Championship race. The attention of this nation will be focused on San Diego as our top American distance runners test their potential for National glory. A new generation of heroes and heroines will arise in preparation for the 2011 World Championships. To witness their achievements at this year’s National Cross Country championships reminds us that it takes each and every one of us to help make their dreams come true. San Diego can be proud of its contribution to USA Cross Country and it is this outstanding effort and support that brings America’s best distance athletes closer to their dreams. Facilities & Records Facilities Irwin Belk Track (1990-2017) Eddie Smith Field House (2001-Present) The University of North Carolina is home to some Athletic Association track and field championships. In season of use, the Eddie Smith Field House is one of the of the finest track & field facilities in the nation, and 1996, Carolina welcomed the U.S. Olympic Team to its best of its kind in the country. 2000 Sacramento - July 14-23 The location of the Trials was Sacramento State University, in Hornet Stadium, which was redeveloped prior to the Trials – thanks in part to a $1.1m donation by local property developer Alex Spanos – enabling a maximum crowd of 23,000 to attend. Like most American stadia it was open to the elements, which meant that sprint events were detrimentally affected by the wind, while a lack of cover gave the crowd the opportunity to be tenderized by the sun. The flat stands meant that the 2 outside lanes were virtually impossible to see by those not seated in the first few rows, and policing was required to prevent peoples’ view from being blocked. A History of the Cooper River Bridge

A HISTORY OF THE COOPER RIVER BRIDGE RUN by Cedric Jaggers contributing editor RUNNING JOURNAL, editor SOUTH CAROLINA RUNNERS’ GAZETTE, former editor LOW COUNTRY RUNNER At 10 A.M. on Sunday morning April 2, 1978 the starting gun was fired for the First COOPER RIVER BRIDGE RUN and the race began. Even at that time it was successful beyond the organizers wildest expecta- tions. Or was it? The first race entry form had this prophetic line just under the race name: ‘. destined to become a legend.’ Race director for the inaugural race, Keith Hamilton said the best part of the day for him was standing in the parking lot at Patriots Point after the race started and seeing the bridge covered with humanity. He said they had expected a maximum of 500 runners and that 340 had pre-registered. The $3.00 entry fee included a T-shirt designed by the race director. There were only 4 awards categories in the first race, with merchandise awards 3 deep in each. The categories were: open male, open female, masters male and masters female. Race day morning was sweltering hot, but despite the 82 degree heat, another 600 or 700 runners regis- tered. Olympian (1952, marathon) Ted Corbitt was one of the runners. A lot of runners fell out from the heat and some had to be hospitalized. In the early days of road racing there was a lot of debate as to whether water should be provided for runners on race courses and by committee vote there was none for the first Bridge Run.
